Rector s Letter Dear Friends The ordination of a deacon is an important occasion not just for the candidate and for the parish to which they are being sent, but for the whole Church. Deacons are called to be servants of God s people according to the pattern of Jesus. They are a sign that love and compassion should always be at the heart of the Church s life and worship. Their ordination is a work of grace, through which they take on the character of Christ and are equipped for the challenges of ministry. The Church itself exists in many forms and can be described by many models, but it is always most attractive and compelling when it follows the pattern of a servant and demonstrates concern for the poor and the rejected. Jesus himself said, I am among you as one who serves, and it is by following his example that the Church and its clergy give expression to the Gospel. No one is won for Christ by a Church that is arrogant and high-handed; it is through humble and devoted acts of service that people glimpse the presence of Christ and become his disciples. A deacon is called to witness to this aspect of the Christian life, both by caring for the sick and needy, and by standing alongside the priest at the altar. On 1st July Mother Martha Grace Weatherill was ordained deacon, along with 11 other candidates, at a moving service in our Cathedral. We offer our prayers for her and her family, and welcome them warmly to their new life here in Chichester. She will be with us as curate for the next three or four years, and brings with her many gifts to use in God s service. I m sure that you will all meet her soon and get to know her. Next year, God willing, she will be ordained a priest, and her ministry will take on a new dimension. But, like all priests (and bishops) she will remain a deacon as well, and a quality of prayerful service should inform her whole ministry, whatever form it may take. Curates are, of course, ministers in training. They are not cheap labour, provided in order to relieve the vicar of some of his or her burdens. They are not at the beck and call of the congregation. They are sent to a particular parish 2

because it is believed that it will provide the right context for their formation as priests. Their training needs are paramount. It is, therefore, important that all of us help Martha to gain confidence in her ministry and allow her enough time for prayer, study and relaxation! It is intended that her weekly day-off will be Friday; in addition she will normally set aside one day each week for IME (Initial Ministerial Training). It is a privilege for a parish to receive a curate in training. St Paul s has, of course, had many curates over the years, and has been richly blessed by their contribution to our church life. I know that you will all make Mother Martha very welcome, and I hope very much that she and her family are very happy here in Chichester. With my prayers and best wishes Fr Simon 9th July - Main service at The March School (no 10am service at St Paul s) Please remember that on Sunday 9th July there will be no 10am Parish Eucharist at St Paul s (there will, as usual, be an 8am service). Instead, we shall be sharing in a United Service at the March School at 10am to celebrate our joint patronal festival the Feast of St Peter and St Paul. We very much hope that you will come to Westhampnett to make this a really special occasion and a demonstration of our support for our brothers and sisters at St Peter s. After the Eucharist there will be a chance to go into St Peter s church to see the exhibition that is being staged as part of a special History Weekend. 3 Sidespersons/Welcomers It would be good to have a chance to reflect on our ministry of welcome at St Paul s, and think about whether there are ways of improving what we do. For this purpose I am inviting all our welcomers/sidespersons to join me after church on Sunday 30th July for a brief meeting to hear your views and ideas. Simon

LOST CHURCH Why we must find it again A conference for those who value traditional parish ministry - though they may not understand why - and are concerned for its future within the Church of England to be led by the Reverend Canon Dr Alan Billings at St Paul s Church, Chichester on Saturday 23 September from 10.15am to lunchtime 4

LOST CHURCH Why we must find it again With the growth of church plants, fresh expressions of church and pioneer ministry, there are those who are questioning whether traditional parish ministry community-based and inclusive has had its day. Is it still an appropriate model of ministry? Is it sustainable at a time of falling clergy numbers and increasing costs? How does it relate to diocesan mission strategies? The aim of the conference is to help us reflect on some of the defining characteristics of the Church of England, and to affirm the enduring value of styles of ministry which respect those who belong to the church, without necessarily believing or attending. The conference is being organised by Canon Simon Holland, Rector of St Paul s Chichester with St Peter s Westhampnett and Canon Ann Waizeneker, Vicar of St Mary de Haura, Shoreham, with the Church of the Good Shepherd, Shoreham Beach, and Chichester Diocesan Dean of Women s Ministry. There will be no charge for the conference, but we would welcome donations (a suggested amount of 5 per person) to cover costs. Please notify the Parish Office if you would like to come. Alan Billings is currently the Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire. He is an Anglican priest and a former Director of the Centre for Ethics and Religion at Lancaster University. He has been Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, a member of the Archbishops Commission on Urban Priority Areas (Faith in the City), and a member of the Home Office Community Cohesion Panel following the riots of He has contributed to BBC Radio 4 s Thought for the Day. He is the author of Lost Church - Why we must find it again (2013), and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an honorary canon of Carlisle. 5

Supporting our Mission Partners The Mission Eco-BBQ: Sunday 16th July This year, the Mission Eco-BBQ is taking place before the summer holidays. Please join us on Sunday 16th July from 12 noon for bountiful burgers, vegetarian delights, sizzling sausages, scrumptious salads and delicious desserts for all Come and enjoy the coffee-time recital given by Annie and Lara after the service, plus a bouncy castle for the children. Tickets are on sale at St Paul s Church on Sunday 2nd July and at Westhampnett joint service on Sunday 9th July. You can also buy tickets after the service on Sunday 16th July but, as we need to know numbers in advance, please phone Margie on or text to to reserve your tickets. Please remember to bring your picnic rugs, crockery, cutlery, etc! St Paul s first Farmer s Market Stall : Sunday 16th July On the same day as the Mission Eco-BBQ, Susie and Kate are putting on a trial farmer s market stall. This Eco swap-shop is your chance to purchase delicious local fruit, veg, jams, cakes and chutneys and/or swap your own gluts and extras for something equally tasty - and contribute to the Mission Group s worthy causes along the way. So, if your courgettes are running riot and you don t know what to do with them; if you ve thinned the cabbage seedlings and have a few left over; if you can bear to part with the 13th cupcake in the batch; or you ve just made some raspberry jam and can spare a jar, please bring them along before the service. And, if you fancy taking home some delicious fresh produce grown and/or cooked on the doorstep, come and have a browse! Any suggestions, please contact Susie and Kate at susie_lunt@yahoo.com 6

Coffee Concert: Sunday 16th July Between the 10am service and the BBQ, Lara and Aniko will give a short Coffee Concert in aid of BEATS. They will be playing Cello and Violin, perhaps piano, and singing as well. Do come and listen while the feast is being prepared. 7

The Reverend Rachel Hawes - Associate Rector I am delighted to be able to report that we will soon be joined within the benefice by a new priest, who will work alongside me as Associate Rector. She is the Reverend Rachel Hawes, who moved to Chichester eighteen months ago, having originated from this area. Most of Rachel s professional life was spent working as a solicitor in London, but she was ordained ten years ago, and had charge of a City church as well as assisting at her parish church in Notting Hill. She is now very generously offering herself for full-time ministry without a stipend, and the plan is that she should have particular responsibility for St Peter s, Westhampnett, whilst also sharing fully in the life of St Paul s (those of you who attend the Thursday Eucharist have already got to know her). At present, Rachel is helping to cover the interregnum at Funtington, but she is to be licensed at St Peter s on 6th September, and I hope very much that many of you from St Paul s will be able to attend the service. Simon Ann Waizeneker s New Responsibility The new Dean of Women's Ministry for the Diocese of Chichester, Canon Ann Waizeneker, has expressed her optimism for the future of women's ministry across Sussex. In an interview broadcast on the Diocesan You Tube Channel, Ann talks confidently about the "mutual flourishing" of men and women working alongside one another in parish ministry. "The role is particularly important because having women priests is a relatively new thing in the context of the history of the Christian faith," she explains. Ann was welcomed publicly a few weeks ago to her new combined role by the Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner. Licensing of Helen Rose Helen will be licensed as Priest-in-Charge of Holy Cross, Woodingdean at 7:30pm on Tuesday 18th July (note change of date). Please sign-up on the noticeboard at the back of church if you hope to attend. 8

Dates for the Calendar In order to ensure that the parish calendar does not become over-crowded, and to maintain a balance between our various church activities, we are asking all those who are responsible for organising events (social, fund-raising etc) to submit their provisional dates for the year Sept 17 to July 18, to the parish office by 30th July. These will then be processed by Jill and Simon to make sure that there are no obvious clashes. This may sound unnecessary, but there have been several occasions in recent years when (very good) events have been organised without consultation, sometimes to the detriment of other, equally good, ones. Now that we have an electronic booking system ( Hallmaster ) it is more than ever important to consult with the parish office before planning anything! Chichester Cathedral Premieres Mosaic of 400 Paintings Chichester Cathedral has just opened an extraordinary exhibition of 400 paintings, produced over 400 consecutive days, by the artist and poet Frieda Hughes. The paintings are displayed in the style of a huge mosaic, 9 metres by 4 metres, titled 400 Days, in the Cathedral s North Transept. Alongside 400 Days Frieda is exhibiting other new paintings titled Alternative Values these artworks are visual responses to her latest collection of poetry carrying the same name. Many of the poems in Alternative Values explore Frieda s increasingly personal look at her childhood with her parents, the poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath; the book includes several moving poems about them. This, she says, is her way of reclaiming her parents very public relationship. The exhibition is on display until 17th August with free entry. 13

Messy Church - Join the Team! Messy Church is a UK wide initiative that invites children and their parents into church to participate in a range of crafts and games which explore a biblical theme, followed by a short period of group worship and a meal together. This allows those families not in consistent church attendance to engage with people from their local church and understand a little about the life and faith of the church in an accessible and friendly way. It is also popular with may of our church families too, with around 50 children and their parents attending on any given session. We would like to make this a monthly event and as such need to expand our Messy team in order to ensure we can deliver an excellent experience without unnecessary strain on our existing volunteers. All materials and ideas are provided (but feel free to bring your own!) and your role is to help the children undertake the tasks whilst talking to them and their carers and making them feel welcome. We also need welcomers, cooks to prepare food and the all important washer-uppers! If you can spare 2/3 hours on 1 Wednesday each month then please contact Liz Yonge on nd July 9th July 16th July 23rd July SOX & ROX this month Sox Youth Group: Festival of Speed Night: 5-6pm Sox/Rox: Beach BBQ. 16 St Paul's Choir - 'Your choir needs you!' We are very lucky at St Paul's to have a strong musical tradition: a great team of organists, a music group, and a large choir! However, I always feel the choir could be larger, especially amongst the children's section! It is an exciting and social group to be part of and the time commitment is not huge. There can't be many parish choirs in the area who have joined forces with other Choral Societies to sing lots of glorious music. Add to that our incredibly strong links with our musical brothers and sisters at the Paul Gerhardt Church, Berlin. The choir will be due to tour Germany again in the next year or so, singing the first part of Handel's Messiah. As a choir we have had the privilege of having several pieces written specially for us. Most recently 'The Tree of Peace' - a mini cantata first performed by ourselves and The Alt Schoenberg Choir. We are starting to sing evensongs in the cathedral again as we hope to raise our profile not just within our church but in the surrounding area. That said, we do need some more voices. Our children's numbers have dipped slightly and it would be good to add to this quite significantly. Rehearsals are on a Thursday night from for the children. Adults join in from 7.00 and stay until Please feel free to mention our recruitment drive to anyone you might think would be interested. I am available for a chat most Sundays or can be contacted by work chris@stpaulschichester.org 16

On the stall you will find a range of Fairtrade products from tea and coffee to washing-up liquid and small gifts. Traidcraft has been transforming lives through fairer trade since Their unique structure a trading company and a development charity gives them a distinctive perspective on how trade can be made to work for the poor. They tackle unfair trade practices, influencing policy-makers to bring about trade justice, and challenging other businesses to behave more ethically. Traidcraft products do carry a premium, but by opting to buy them you are helping small producers earn a decent, secure income for their families. So, if you only buy one item from the stall you know that your box of teabags, packet of cookies or indulgent bar of chocolate really will make a difference to somebody s life.

Psalm 23 Psalm 23 is perhaps the best known of the 150 psalms in the bible - it even wins the most tweeted award! A few weeks ago our Sunday Eucharist included no fewer than three different arrangements of this one psalm. But here is another translation of this psalm submitted by a member of our congregation which she thinks beats all other versions: You are my pace setter, I shall not rush, you let me stop for quiet intervals provide images of stillness to restore my serenity. You lead me in ways of efficiency through calmness of mind. Your guidance is peace. Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day. I will not fret for your presence is near your timelessness, your all importance will keep me in balance you prepare refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity touching my mind with your soothing balm. My cup of joyous energy overflows. Truly harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours for I shall walk at your pace and dwell in your house for ever. Tokio Megashie St Paul s Fellowship of the 3rd Age (F3A) meetings this month are as follows: 7 July 2:45pm: Afternoon Group meeting at 4 Drayman's Mews (789003) The topic will be 'What makes worship meaningful?' 28 July 3.00pm: Both Afternoon and Evening Groups are invited by Paddy to our annual tea party at 21 St.Martin's Square. 18
