5 From the Pastor s Desk My Dear Friends in Christ, As the temperature rose two weekends ago (before dropping once again), many of you asked me a similar question (and, I would imagine, not a few thought it): what is happening with the air conditioning? What follows is a brief history of the planning that took place before I became pastor, a summary of the work performed until now, a review of the planning that has taken place since I began my term in August, and a brief synopsis of the current plan. Upon the commencement of our Renew and Rebuild Campaign, it was decided that air conditioning the church would be one of the proposed projects. In anticipation of this endeavor, the Friars Chapel and Sacristy were both remade, with their locations being switched with one another. Both spaces were air-conditioned using LG floor units. These units supplement the existing radiators (for heat) and provide cooling during the warm months. The plan, as originally conceived, would shift both morning masses into the chapel in order to conserve energy (and limit costs). We have adjusted this plan as mass attendance requires. In the preliminary drafts of the plan to air condition the main church, emphasis was placed on maintaining the church s beauty, the overall effectiveness of the plan and the need for fiscal responsibility not only in installation, but also in day-to-day use (i.e., electric bills). Fr. Moe engaged an architect and engineer to begin working on the plan and also filed the necessary application with ConEd to increase the electrical service into the church. In recent days, the electrical service into the church has been successfully increased, inspected, and approved. The plan for the actual air conditioning of the church, however, proved more challenging than originally anticipated. Several plans, most of which involved significant modifications to the inside of the church, were reviewed and rejected. In the last days, an acceptable plan has been reached. The air conditioning will originate from units placed in both the alleyway between the Monastery and church and on Convent Avenue adjacent to the northwest corner of the church (to the right of the door to the church hall). The old, decaying blacktop between the sidewalk and church on Convent Avenue will be replaced with pavers, and shrubbery that both conceals the new units as well as highlights the natural beauty of our church will be added. The new units will produce both cold and hot air (an added bonus to supplement expensive steam heat in winter) and will be filtered through the existing ductwork and vents on either side of the church in the coves below the large murals on the east and west sides of the church. Additionally, floor units disguised with grillwork will be placed in the sanctuary. Similar units will be used to cool the choir loft. Added mechanics for the system will be hidden from vision in four of the six confessionals in the church. In other words, aside from the units outside (hidden from view), there will be no noticeable change to the inside of the church aside from it being cooler in the summer and less expensive to heat in the winter! Our contracted engineer is drafting the actual specifications of this plan. Upon its final approval, the plan will be sent out to bid to several HVAC companies. Once a vendor is selected, work will begin. As a more exact timeline becomes clear, I will share it with you.
