May God bless your generosity to Sacred Heart! My Dear Friends in Christ, I recall a story about an old priest who, whenever asked how he was doing, would respond, Pray for my conversion! Indeed, conversion is the goal of all Christian life. God does love us: this love is unending, irrevocable and unconditional. Precisely because God loves us so much, God calls us to continual transformation in mind, body, and soul after the image of his Son, Jesus the Christ. This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood characteristics of God. Unconditional love doesn t mean that we don t need to try; rather, it could (and should) invite us to a deeper imitation of Christ. Think of it this way: do we not want our spouses, friends, children, and acquaintances to be the best versions of themselves? If this is so, how could we expect the God and Father of us all to be any different? This weekend s readings both invite us to this conversion and also raise for our consideration some possible areas of conversion in our lives. To be doers of the word and not hearers only means that we can honestly and earnestly in the presence of our God, ask for the Holy Spirit s true assistance in identifying what is blocking an improved relationship with God. Need a jumpstart? Let s listen to Jesus suggestions: "From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile." This Labor Day weekend means school begins again; at the same time, it means that many parish groups and events (those both familiar and several that are brand new) will begin. Much more will be coming in next week s bulletin. In the meantime, please remember that the Parish Offices are closed on Labor Day (only one Mass at 8:30 am) and that weekly Adoration begins this coming Thursday, September 6 at 3:30 pm in the Blessed Solanus Casey Chapel. 4 RCIA Thinking of becoming Catholic or of completing your Christian initiation in the Catholic community? The Catholic Church welcomes anyone who inquires about, or who seeks, full membership in the Church and Gospel life through RCIA (The Rite of Christian initiation of Adults), which is the Church s process of preparing adults for the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. Please call or Fr. John ( ; jmchugh@sacredheartyonkers.org) if you (or anyone you know) would like to investigate or begin the process of RCIA. RCIA sessions will begin in early September. Faith Formation Religious Education Registration is NOW OPEN Got to follow the link to Online Registration Classes start: Sunday, September 16 th Grades 1 through 6 meet on Sunday mornings from the end of the 9:45 Mass until 12:00 noon. Grades 7 and 8 meet on either Sunday mornings or Monday evenings at 7:15 P.M. R.C.I.A. Adapted for Children This program is designed for the Christian Initiation of children of catechetical age, which the church generally considers to be 7 to 15 years old, who may not have received age-appropriate Sacraments. Children who have not been Baptized, or who did not receive the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation at the regular time may begin this process beginning in September. If any family needs help with the new registration or additional information, please call the Parish Office at Adult Faith Formation Faith Formation Class Br. Richard s class will resume Tuesday, September 11 at 10:00 AM in parish office. Subject matter will be Christology, the study of the Person and Natures of Christ, which will include the Personality of Jesus. Later in the year we will do Sacraments and time permitting some Church History. New members always welcome! Children s Liturgy of the Word The Children s Liturgy of the Word is a special opportunity for children at the 9:45 Mass to share the word of God in an age appropriate reflection. Children, 4 years through 3 rd grade, are invited to come to the Church Hall where they will celebrate the Liturgy of the Word. They will return to the church at the Presentation of the Gifts. Adult volunteers are always welcome! If you would like to help, please call Deanne in the Parish Office or dmay@sacreheartyonkers.org. We have several Adult Faith Formation Opportunities that are already in place here at Sacred Heart: RCIA, Br. Richard s Tuesday morning Discussion Group, Saturday Lectio Divina. We are looking to start a few small faith groups: different times, different days as schedules permit. Whether they be Book Clubs, Prayer Group, Topic Discussion Group, or your ideas we want to hear about them!
