5 Was the No-Meat-On-All-Fridays change an innovation of Vatican Council II? No. The abrogation of the Friday-abstinence law was probably made in the spirit of the Council, but it had nothing to do with Vatican II per se. The initiative was Pope Paul VI s, a was enunciated in the apostolic constitution of February 17, 1966, Poenitemini. Poenitemini provided changes in a number of dietary disciplines, but the news bombshell was that Catholics could now eat meat on Friday. This was a startling change, as generations of Catholics had been brought up to believe that eating meat on Friday wasn t just a sin, it was a mortal (deadly) sin. This was no ordinary discipline. The belief was that one could burn in hell for all eternity for enjoying that hamburger on Friday! Catholic source books were emphatic on the point; e.g., the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia stated:...the law of abstinence (on Friday) embodies a serious obligation whose transgression, objectively considered, ordinarily involves a mortal sin. The unanimous verdict of theologians, the constant practice of the faithful, a the mi of the Church place this point beyo doubt. However, even though eating meat on Friday was no longer a serious sin, people were expected to respect the day as one of penitence, the basic requirements of which consisted, in Pope Paul s words, of prayer-fastingcharity, with peoples of the world s richer nations expected to practice self-denial a charity on behalf of their brothers who suffer in poverty a in hunger... It was left to iividual bishops conferences to decide exactly what those practices should be. The U.S. bishops encourage works of penance, but it is safe to say that for most American Catholics the ordinary Friday is now no different than any other day of the week. From Facts, Myths a Maybes by John Deedy The Church s faithful are not those who cling to accidental elements that were valid in the past but are now outdated. Pope John Paul II Mexico, 1997 Was the relaxing of Eucharistic fast regulations an innovation of Vatican Council II? No. The change in Eucharistic fast regulations was rather an innovation born of World War II. For centuries the Church required Catholics in good health to fast from midnight in order to receive Communion on any given day. The fast included water, along with all foods a other liquids, a there were no exceptions, not even for a small sip of water taken while half-asleep in the middle of the night. Any intake of whatever ki broke the fast, a one could not receive Communion that day. The regulation was changed by Pope Pius XII ( ) to accommodate the requests of military chaplains so that they could celebrate Mass at any hour for the welfare of the troops. But the privilege was strictly a military one. Change for the faithful generally did not come until Pius XII approved evening Mass on holy days of obligation (that was in 1953), a later when he exteed the holy day evening Mass exception to First Fridays a occasions of religious solemnity (1957). For ordinary people in the pew, changes in the Eucharistic fast came in two steps. First, there was the apostolic constitution of January 16, 1953, Christus Dominus, declaring that water did not break the Eucharistic fast though one still had to fast from food a other liquids from midnight in order to receive Communion. Exceptions were provided for travelers a those engaged in energy-sapping work; they could take liquids (alcohol excepted) up to one hour before Mass a Communion. Those relaxations led to Sacrum communionem, Pius XII s moto proprio of March 19, 1957, which reduced the Eucharistic fast to three hours from solid food a one hour from liquids, alcohol again excepted; a threehour fast was required from alcohol. In 1964 Pope Paul VI ( ) in turn reduced the Eucharistic-fast time frame to one hour from solid food a liquids. That regulation is in place today. Of course, in apostolic times a for the early Christians, the Eucharist was celebrated in the context of a meal. Strict Eucharistic fasts developed centuries later. The gradual reducing of the fasts can be seen as leading up to the time when the fathers of the 2 Vatican Council ( ) directed that the Mass be restored "to the ancient usage of the holy Fathers."
