An initial set will be sent to you right away, and then, every two months, you will receive a two-month s supply of envelopes. Pope Pius X: Look how they have dressed me up! Giuseppe Sarto, , was born near Venice, Italy, the second of ten children in a very poor family. When elected pope, he was the first peasant to hold that office since the Middle Ages. A simple and unpretentious person all his days, Pope Pius X remained aware of his humble origins, and never got used to the formality of life in the Vatican. He was embarrassed by some of the pomp of the papal court. One day, when an old friend came to visit, he burst into tears, saying: Look how they have me dressed up! It is said that after his mother kissed his papal ring at his coronation, she then presented her hand with her wedding ring, saying, Now you kiss my ring for without it, you never would have received yours! Pope Pius X is best known for his encouragement of frequent reception of the Eucharist and for lowering the age so that children could make their First Communion at age 7 instead of 12. No, no! I don t want it! In 1958 the institution of the papacy had not fully entered the 20th century. Outdated rituals of a princely court lingered, dating back to the days when popes ruled the papal states. Pope John XXIII, by his official accomplishments and by the sheer magnitude of his personality, swept the church into the modern world. After the 5-hour traditional coronation (today popes are installed ), the pope s secretary asked Pope John, Are you pleased with the way things went? John replied, How sad I was! How sad I was when I saw the poor old Cardinal Copello told to kneel, and then he incensed me on his knees three times as is done to the Eucharist. No, no, I prohibit this! The secretary advised, Let it go for now; change things slowly, slowly. No, no, I don t want it! was John s adamant reply. Another ceremony involved the cardinals coming one by one to be received by the new pope. It took more than a day. Each made the traditional gesture of homage to him as Christ s representative, kissing first his feet and then his hand before being raised for a brotherly embrace. At the end of the first day, the pope said, Tomorrow I don t want any of this foot kissing! I don t want this rite! And nobody from that moment on was allowed to kiss his feet. In contrast to his predecessors, Pope John often went around Rome wearing a simple black cassock, mingling with the crowds on sidewalks, talking with the people. This caused panic among the pope s guards who would often find him in one of Rome s poorest neighborhoods having supper with a local family. Eventually his trips drew criticism from Vatican officials. When he heard of it he quipped, So they say I go out too much during the day. Very well, from now on I ll go out at night!

6 The Papal Tiara Triple papal Tiaras were worn by popes at their coronation between the 14 th and 20 th centuries. During papal coronations the following words were uttered as the tiara was placed on the pope s head: Receive the tiara adorned with three crowns, and know that thou art Father of Princes and Kings, Ruler of the World, Vicar of Our Savior Jesus Christ on earth, to whom is honor and glory in the ages of ages. Pope John XXIII made the first move to break with this tradition from medieval times when he refused to wear the tiara except for the two times when it was expected: at the start of his papacy and at the start of his Second Vatican Council but never again. Pope Paul VI then followed up by abandoning the use of the tiara after the Second Vatican Council, symbolically laying it on the altar of St. Peter s Basilica, and donating its value to the poor. The next pope, Pope John Paul I, who died after only a month in office, replaced the coronation of the pope with a general inauguration ceremony for the pontificate. After John Paul I s sudden death, Pope John Paul II told the congregation at the solemn inauguration of his pontificate: The last Pope to be crowned was Paul VI in 1963, but after the solemn coronation ceremony Paul VI never used the tiara again, and left his successors free to decide in this regard. Pope John Paul I, whose memory is so vivid in our hearts, did not wish to have the tiara; nor does his successor wish it today. This is not the time to return to a ceremony and an object considered, wrongly, to be a symbol of the temporal power of the Popes. Our time calls us, urges us, obliges us to gaze on the Lord and immerse ourselves in humble and devout meditation on the mystery of the supreme power of Christ himself.

7 St. Bernard: In all things that belong to earthly magnificence, you have succeeded not Peter, but the Emperor Constantine. St. Bernard ( ) was an important medieval theologian and a major figure in the Cistercian Order of monks. Pope Eugenius III was a friend and a disciple of Bernard and was the first Cistercian monk to become pope. Pope Eugenius asked Bernard for his thoughts on the right manner of conduct for the successor of St. Peter. Bernard wrote: That you have been raised to the pinnacle of honor and power is an undeniable fact. But for what purpose have you been so elevated? Here is a question that calls for your utmost consideration. It was not that you might enjoy the glory of lordship. What profit does the flock derive from magnificent pageants, with you, the supreme shepherd of the flock advancing majestically in gilded clothing? Do you think that Saint Peter loved to surround himself with this pomp and display, or Saint Paul? No. In all things that belong to earthly magnificence, you have succeeded not Peter, but the Emperor Constantine! However, I would counsel you to tolerate this splendor at least for a time, yet without falling in love with it, or regarding it as essential to your state. St. Bernard, who founded 68 monasteries, was personally charitable and kind, but he was also a formidable opponent, and he spared no effort in attacking injustice, such as excessive luxury among the clergy and the persecution of the Jews. The Church s faithful are not those who cling to accidental elements that were valid in the past but are now outdated. St. John Paul II
