5 Canticle of the Creatures Most High, All-Powerful, All-Good God! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor and all blessing. To you alone do they belong. Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through Brother Sun, bringing the day, and through whom you give us light. He is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. Be praised through Sister Moon and the stars whom you have made bright, precious, beautiful. Be praised through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance. Be praised through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure. Be praised through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, powerful and strong. Be praised through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs. Be praised through all who forgive for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned. St. Francis of Assisi (In 1979 St. John Paul II named St. Francis of Assisi patron saint of those who promote ecology.) Be conscious, O man, of the wondrous state in which the Lord God has placed you, for he created you and formed you in the image of his beloved Son. And yet, all the creatures under heaven each according to its nature serve, know, and obey their Creator better than you! St. Francis of Assisi St. Ignatius of Loyola ( ) [Feast day: July 31] St. Ignatius was inspired by the life, example and spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi ( ). Ignatius, at the time of his conversion, preferred a life spent imitating St. Francis of Assisi. Diego Lainez, who succeeded Ignatius as leader of the Jesuits, gives this recollection of Ignatius own evening contemplations: At night, Ignatius would go up on the roof of the house, with the sky up above him. He would sit there quietly, absolutely quietly. He would take his hat off and look up for a long time at the sky. Then he would fall on his knees, bowing profoundly to God. O God, grant us a deeper sense of fellowship with all living creatures, our little brothers and sisters, to whom, in common with us, you have given this earth as home. We recall with regret when we have acted high-handedly and cruelly in exercising our domain over them. Thus, the voice of the earth, which should have risen to you in song, has turned into a groan of travail.
