I recently attended a church ceremony in which several people received the sacrament of the sick, including some who were young and didn t look sick at all. Isn t it necessary to be in danger of death to have this sacrament? A. Vatican Council II, in calling for a return to the ancient usage of the holy Fathers, said in its Constitution on the Liturgy, that the Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament not only for those who are in danger of death. According to our present rite for anointing of the sick, then, an individual need not be in danger of death, but dangerously ill either from sickness or advanced age. Older people are considered eligible for the sacrament simply because of the general infirmities of old age, even if they are suffering from no serious specific disease. Moreover, the illness need not be physical. Guidelines on this sacrament issued by the U.S. bishops note, Sickness is more than a medical phenomenon. Sickness is a crisis situation in the life of a Christian as regards his salvation, his life with Christ in the community of the Church. Anointing of the sick may be administered to people suffering from various kinds of spiritual or emotional crises. Thus, people no longer need to be dying, or even look sick, to receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The official directions concerning this sacrament mention several specific circumstances in which people should be anointed, e.g., old age, before serious surgery, and sick children. Rev John J. 5 The Joy of the Gospel Evangelii Gaudium Pope Francis There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without Easter. I realize of course that joy is not expressed the same way at all times in life, especially at moments of great difficulty. Joy adapts and changes, but it always endures, even as a flicker of light born of our personal certainty that, when everything is said and done, we are infinitely loved. I understand the grief of people who have to endure great suffering, yet slowly but surely we all have to let the joy of faith slowly revive as a quiet yet firm trust, even amid the greatest distress: My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is... But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness... It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. (Lam 3:17, 21-23,26) For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nothing already in existence and nothing still to come, nor any power, nor the heights nor the depths, nor any created thing whatever, will be able to come between us and the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 All that the Father gives me shall come to me; no one who comes will I ever reject, because it is not to do my own will that I have come down from heaven, but to do the will of him who sent me. It is the will of him who sent me that I should lose nothing of what he has given me; rather, that I should raise it up on the last day. John 6:37-39 Genuine Christian joy is not a perpetual state of ecstatic hilarity. By no means! True joy is that interior peace and happiness which comes from our awareness that God loves us just as we are. 6 Handling Holiday Depression Dear Padre, Why do I get so depressed every holiday season? I just can t get any joy into my bones. Feeling Blue Dear Feeling, It might help you to know that you have lots of company in your depression during the holidays. Many people feel like you do, and there are numerous factors that cause holiday depression. One of the reasons people get depressed at this time of year is because their expectations are too high. They think the holidays will be something like an instant fix that their problems with family or job or money will go away and then everything will be all right. Then again, for some people, holiday depression comes from living alone. Advertising gives the false impression that all families and group of friends are filled with joy - which is not necessarily true. One also can feel alone and depressed even while in the midst of a large family or group of people. Another factor affecting people s feelings at Christmas is their personal history of Christmases past. No matter how old we get, we still wear some of the garments of childhood. For some this is good; for others bad, depending on whether or not the childhood experience was good or bad. To feel joy at the Christmas season we have to enter into the spirit of generosity and love that radiates from the crib of the Infant. In other words we have to make something happen. Many times we sit around and wonder why we are not happier, or when someone else is going to make us happy. What we should be thinking is what we can do to make someone else happy. If we reach out to help and love others, we will be helped, and we will be loved, and we will feel the joy of Jesus. The joy of the world, whether at Christmas or any time of the year, is Jesus. An acceptance of him and his love and his teaching is a road to peace and contentment. Outside of him there is no lasting joy or peace. The Padre, Fr. Bill Mckee, C.SS.R. St. Pio of Pietrelcina By forgiving his executioners, Jesus showed he is not the accuser of the guilty but rather their advocate and intercessor. Jesus words of forgiveness ( Father, forgive them for they know not what they do ) were spoken in circumstances of the greatest hatred and cruelty. Jesus forgives His adversaries immediately, even as their hostility continues. Jesus is the defender, not the accuser of the guilty, because He knows that many can be less guilty than it appears, or one thinks. For this reason, he taught his followers not to judge others. The mercy Jesus asked for His executioners is extended to all humanity. Pope John Paul II Do We X-out Christ? In Greek type or script, the letter ( Chi ) looks like the letter X in our English print or type. The Greek (Chi) has been used as an abbreviation for Christ or Christos since the beginning of Christianity. Therefore, Xmas is simply an abbreviation for Christmas. Merry mas! Christmas is itself an abbreviation of Christ Mass. THE CHI RHO. In Greek the first two letters of the title Christ are Chi ( ) and Rho (Ñ), an early abbreviation of CHRist. The Chi ( ) was often superimposed on the Rho (Ñ) as a monogram for Christ. Sometimes, the Chi ( ) was turned or rotated to line up with the vertical line of the Rho (Ñ), forming a cross.

7 Pope Francis: This is our God: he is a dad to us. St. Paul, in his Letter to the Romans, writes: You received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, Abba, Father! It is precisely the Holy Spirit that we have received in Baptism that teaches us, that urges us to say to God: Father, or better Abba, which means dad. This is our God: he is a dad to us. The Holy Spirit creates in us this new condition of being children of God and this is the greatest gift we receive from Jesus Paschal Mystery. God treats us as children, understands us, forgives us, embraces us, loves us, even when we make mistakes. Only by living as children of God, without being discouraged by our missteps or by our sins, feeling loved by him will our lives be new, inspired by serenity and joy. God is our strength! God is our hope! What a beautiful truth of faith this is for our lives: the mercy of God! God s love for us is so great, so deep. It is an unfailing love, one which always takes us by the hand and supports us, lifts us up and leads us on. Brothers and Sisters, let us never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God! God is not impatient like us, who often want everything all at once, even in our dealings with other people. God is patient with us because he loves us, and those who love are able to understand, to hope, to inspire confidence. They do not give up, they do not burn bridges, they are able to forgive. God s patience has to call forth in us the courage to return to him, however many mistakes and sins there may be in our life. We hear many offers from the world around us, but let us take up God s offer instead: his is a caress of love even if we are sinners, we are what is closest to his heart. Let s say this prayer: Lord, I believe in your love. And we open our hearts so that this love comes to us, fills us and pushes us to love others. Let us make an act of faith today: Lord, I believe. I believe in your love. I believe that your love has saved me. I believe that your love has given me that dignity that I did not have. I believe that your love gives me hope.
