Give as God Has Given To You Generously According To Your Means Once you have analyzed your income and expenses and prepared a budget, place this issue in prayer before God. All are invited to give a portion of what they have been given. In the Bible, the portion offered to God is called a tithe. The tithe literally means a tenth actually, the first tenth. Today, the tithe, the portion given, usually represents 5% to the parish church and 5% to other worthy causes, such as Catholic Charities, special collections, etc. Each person should pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in determining what portion to give. The First Fruits for God By planning ahead, one can make the portion offered truly the first portion the First Fruits for God rather than the Leftovers. Parents are called to pass on to their children the awareness that life must always be defended, Pope Francis wrote in a message to Catholics joining in Brazil s Catholic Celebration of Family Week last year. The pope returned to his condemnation of the throwaway culture. He said that modern cultures tend to treat even human lives as disposable, pointing to the way people, societies and even governments tend to treat both the young and the old. Pope Francis said that parents have a responsibility to fight that disposable culture by teaching their children that human life from the womb, is a gift from God. New life ensures the future of humanity, he said, while older people - especially grandparents - are the living memory of a people and transmit the wisdom of life. The pope also charged married Catholic couples and their children with the task of recognizing they must be the most convincing heralds of the beauty and grace of Christian marriage. Calling to mind the teaching of Saint Irenaeus that the glory of God is seen in a living human being, I encourage all of you to let the light of that glory shine so brightly that everyone may come to recognize the inestimable value of all human life. I pray that the Day of Life will help to ensure that human life always receives the protection that is its due, so that everything that breathes may praise the Lord. All of us must care for life, cherish life, with tenderness, warmth. To give life is to open the heart, and to care for life is to expend one s self in tenderness and warmth for others, to have concern in my heart for others. Caring for life from the beginning to the end what a simple thing, what a beautiful thing. Go forth, and don t be discouraged. Care for life. It s worth it!
