4 A Communal Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation A Celebration of God's Forgiving Love The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in kindness. He does not deal with us according to our sins and failings. He saves our life and protects us. He crowns us with kindness and compassion. Gathering Song: Change our hearts this time; your word says it can be. Change our minds this time, your life could make us free. We are the people your call set apart. Lord, this time, change our hearts. Greeting/Introduction and Liturgy of the Word Act of Contrition (Prayer of Sorrow or Prayer of the Penitent) Prior to the individual confessions, we will all pray together the following communal act of contrition from the Rite of Penance which is also printed in the brochure published by Our Sunday Visitor. COMMUNAL ACT OF CONTRITION My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. From the Rite of Penance Individual Confessions Those who wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation may go to one of the priests in the various confessional stations, and follow the Confession Procedure listed below. NOTE: This is not a time for extensive counseling. Simply state your sin(s) and receive penance and absolution. No act of contrition at this time, since it has already been prayed in common. CONFESSION PROCEDURE (Make the sign of the cross saying:) In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It has been about (this much time) since my last confession. (or: "This is my 1st Confession.") 1. Make your confession of sins, and let the priest know you ve finished by saying you re sorry for all of your sins. 2. The priest will, then, give you a penance, absolution and dismissal. 3. After leaving the confessional station, pray your penance in silence. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. Have I made false accusations against anyone? Do I refuse to accept correction, constructive criticism or legitimate authority? Do I recognize the needs of others, and try to help them? Do I sincerely care about the situation of others? Am I faithful to the commitment of my vocation in marriage or in the single state? Do I take care of my health? Do I hurt myself through excesses? Do I abuse drugs, use harmful substances or participate in harmful activities? Do I seek to use all things in moderation? Do I try to discipline myself? Do I care for the environment, and try to preserve the beauty and wealth of nature, a gift to be shared with others and passed on to the future? Am I a law-abiding citizen? Am I concerned with the safety of others as well as myself? Am I reckless and irresponsible? Do I seek to carry out my civic duties responsibly. Am I compassionate? Do I pray for others? Do I pray for my enemies and all who have offended me? Do I ask God's mercy for myself and for all others?

6 Confession: Celebration of Mercy Instructions for priests by Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, Vatican expert on confessions W h e n h e a r i n g confessions, priests need to replace any negative or aggressive attitudes with meekness and mercy toward the penitent. Sometimes, the Sacrament of Reconciliation turns into a unilateral overemphasis on the accusation and listing of sins. The end result is that the thing that is absolutely central when listening to sin, that is, the blessed embrace of the merciful Father, is put on the back burner. At times, confession takes on the semblance of a prosecuting tribunal rather than a celebration of forgiveness, and the conversation takes on inquisitorial or indelicate tones. A priest must be a father who welcomes, listens and engages in dialogue. Priests are called to show mercy and hope, to be fathers more than judges, to take on the penitent s pain and listen with much patience. All of this has nothing to do with being lax or permissive, rather it focuses on the inner liberation of the penitent, the penitent s feelings of remorse and repentance, and facilitating the penitent s reception of judgment, grace and mercy from God. Priests must carefully control their reaction, including facial expressions and gestures, when hearing confessions. The priest should imitate Christ s gentleness and never display a sense of shock, no matter how grave the sin. The priest must never pry for personal details, never show impatience, and should instill an awe and reverence of God, not terror, and should condemn the sin, not the sinner. Penitents open their heart and soul to the confessor because they see him as being God s minister, and if instead they find in him severity, not mercy, or doubts and obscurity and not the light of truth, they will have been truly deceived. From Catholic News Service A penitent s sins are forgiven, not when the priest says the sacramental words of absolution over him or her, nor when the penitent completes the assigned penance, but the instant the penitent is truly sorry for his or her sins. St. Thomas Aquinas An inmate asked the pope why he had to go to confession for pardon instead of just getting on his knees and asking God for forgiveness. Pope Benedict, XVI responded, Naturally, if you get on your knees and, with real love for God, pray that God forgive you, he will. But sin doesn t disturb only the relationship between an individual and God. It also harms the community of the Church and wider society. The sacrament of Reconciliation is the great gift by which, through confession, I can receive real forgiveness from, and a full re-admission into, the community of the Church. Pastors must always remember what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches quite clearly: Responsibility for an action can be diminished or even nullified by immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social forces. 7 The Easter Triduum HOLY THURSDAY Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper There are three parts to the Good Friday liturgy: 1) The Liturgy of the Word. The Gospel reading is the Passion according to John. 2) The Veneration of the Cross. The cross is brought into the church in a solemn procession. Everyone may come forward to venerate the cross by kissing or touching it, or by simply bowing before it. 3) Holy Communion. The altar is covered with a cloth, and the Blessed Sacrament is brought to the altar from the place of repose. Communion is distributed. After the Prayer Over the People, all depart in silence. HOLY SATURDAY The Easter Vigil White vestments are worn. The Liturgy recalls the Last Supper, and includes the Washing of the Feet ceremony, recalling Jesus example of loving service to demonstrate his command to love one another. After the Communion Prayer, there is no final blessing. The Holy Eucharist is carried in solemn procession through the church to a place of repose, the chapel. A period of silent adoration follows. GOOD FRIDAY Celebration of the Lord s Passion Today the whole Church mourns the death of our Savior. This a traditionally a day of sadness, spent in fasting, prayer and abstinence. Many parishes pray the Stations of the Cross devotion sometime during this day. Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday. The official liturgy for this day is the Celebration of the Lord s Passion. The altar is completely bare. The priests and deacon, wearing red vestments, begin the liturgy by prostrating for a brief moment in silent prayer before the altar; then, an introductory prayer is prayed. After sunset, the solemn Easter Vigil Mass begins. The celebration of the Lord s resurrection is filled with a spirit of joy that extends through the fifty days of the Easter Season. The Easter Vigil liturgy is in four parts: 1) Service of Light: The Pascal (Easter) candle, which symbolizes Christ, the Light of the World, is brought into the darkened church with the priest acclaiming, Christ our Light! and the people responding, Thanks be to God! Individual candles held by everyone present are lit from the Easter Candle fire. The glorious Easter Proclamation (The Exultet) is sung. 2) Liturgy of the Word: The readings on this night help us meditate on the wonderful works of God for his people since the beginning of time. The Glory to God is sung, and Alleluia, which has not been sung since the beginning of Lent, is sung before the Gospel. 3) Liturgy of Baptism and Confirmation: The Litany of the Saints is sung, and the water of the font is blessed before the celebration of the sacraments of baptism and confirmation for those entering into communion with the Catholic Church. 4) Liturgy of the Eucharist: The Mass resumes as usual and is ended with the sung double Alleluia.
