6 Vatican says it is treating Pennsylvania grand jury report with great seriousness Two days following the release of a grand jury report in Pennsylvania with revelations of clergy sexual abuse of some 1,000 victims, the Vatican press office said, August 16, that the acts documented in the report are criminal and morally reprehensible. Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the Holy See is treating the grand jury s report with great seriousness. The Holy Father understands well how much these crimes can shake the faith and spirit of believers and reiterates the call to make every effort to create a safe environment for minors and vulnerable adults in the Church and in all of society... The Holy See also wants to underscore the need to comply with the civil law, including mandatory child abuse reporting requirements. Pope Francis: We have abandoned the little ones Pope Francis has acknowledged that the Catholic Church did not act in a timely manner to protect children from sexually abusive priests over a period of decades, saying in a new letter to members of the Catholic faith around the world that the Church abandoned minors to those who would abuse them. With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been... realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives, the pontiff says in the letter, released August 20 in response to the Pennsylvania grand jury report. We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them, the pope states. In the three-page letter, addressed to the People of God, Francis also says the Church has delayed in implementing measures to protect children and to hold those who have abused them to account. Praising zero-tolerance policies and ways of making all those who perpetrate or cover up these crimes accountable, the pontiff states: We have delayed in applying these actions and sanctions that are so necessary, yet I am confident that they will help to guarantee a greater culture of care in the present and future. The pope s letter begins with a quote from St. Paul s first letter to the Corinthians: If one member suffers, all suffer together with it. These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons, the pontiff states. Looking back to the past, no effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient. Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. 7 The Church Is Human Let us love the Church of weakness... We are not ashamed of her because of the many shameful things about her... We must cherish the Church as Christ does. We must fill her with warm love... And behold, precisely through this love, the transformation of the Church from weakness to power, from crippled ugliness to immortal beauty, is taking place, silently and irresistibly until the end of time. Hugo Rahner, The Church Although by the power of the Holy Spirit the Church has remained the faithful spouse of her Lord and has never ceased to be the sign of salvation on earth, still she is very well aware that among her members, both clerical and lay, some have been unfaithful to the Spirit of God during the course of many centuries. In the present age, too, it does not escape the Church how great a distance lies between the message she offers and the human failings to whom the Gospel is entrusted. The Church Today, The Second Vatican Council Before the tribunal of God s mercy we, the shepherds, should make ourselves responsible for all the evils now burdening the flock of Christ. We should take upon ourselves the sins of all, not in generosity but in justice; because the truth is that we are in great part the cause of these evils, and therefore we implore the divine mercy through Jesus Christ. Cardinal Pole, the pope s representative at the Council of Trent, convened in response to the Protestant Reformation in the 1500's We are not baptized into the hierarchy; do not receive the cardinals sacramentally; will not spend an eternity in the beatific vision of the pope. Christ is the point. I, myself, admire the present pope (John Paul II), but even if I criticized him as harshly as some do, even if his successor proved to be as bad as some of those who have gone before, even if I find the Church, as I have to live with it, a pain in the neck, I should still say that nothing a pope (or a priest) could do or say would make me wish to leave the Church, although I might well wish that they would leave. Frank Sheed The fact that the Lord knows how to work and to act even with inadequate instruments comforts me, and above all I entrust myself to your prayers. The one who holds the office of the ministry of Peter must be aware that he is a frail and weak human being just as his own powers are frail and weak and is constantly in need of purification and conversion. The pope isn t an absolute sovereign, whose thoughts and desires are law. On the contrary, the ministry of the pope is the guarantor of the obedience toward Christ and his word. The pope is not a prophet. He is infallible only in very rare circumstances, as we all know. Pope Benedict XVI Christ, holy, innocent, and undefiled, knew nothing of sin, but came only to expiate the sins of the people. The Church, however, clasping sinners to her bosom, at once holy and always in need of purification, follows constantly the path of penance and renewal. All members of the Church, including her ministers, must always acknowledge that they are sinners. In everyone, the weeds of sin will still be mixed with the good wheat of the Gospel until the end of time. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, #827
