4 his brothers so pure that he was willing to die so that they might live. Before his capture, Fr. Kapaun had received the Bronze Star. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross after he died. Within the Catholic Church, he has an active cause for sainthood, having been recognized by the Vatican as a servant of God, a first step in the investigation of someone who is being considered for sainthood. Father Emil J. Kapaun Shepherd In Combat Boots Army Chaplain Fr. Emil J. Kapaun was a Catholic Army chaplain who served during the Korean War. He was so outstanding in his selfless, heroic service to the soldiers he served with, that, after the war, those soldiers worked for over 50 years to get the Medal of Honor bestowed on him. As a result of their efforts, Fr. Emil J. Kapaun was finally honored posthumously with the Medal of Honor, the highest military honor. The bestowal of the Medal took place in a White House ceremony in Among his heroic acts during the war, Fr. Kapaun pulled wounded men from enemy fire, and helped his fellow prisoners of war keep a sense of hope. In paying tribute to Father Kapaun, President Obama told multiple stories of the shepherd in combat boots who was from Kansas and voluntarily stayed behind with the wounded to face certain capture, rather than evacuate when his division was overrun at Unsan, Korea, in November President Obama said, This is the valor we honor today an American soldier who didn t fire a gun, who wielded the mightiest weapon of all, a love for Some of Fr. Kapaun s fellow prisoners, who walked out of their prison camp carrying a crucifix they had fashioned to honor their deceased chaplain, were in attendance at the 2013 White House ceremony. The Medal of Honor, given to members of the armed forces for distinguished gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in active service, was presented to a nephew of Fr. Kapaun Ray Kapaun, who never knew his uncle. Also in attendance was Herb Miller, who as a sergeant in 1951, was injured when a grenade exploded near him. A Chinese soldier was about to execute Miller, when Fr. Kapaun stepped in to stop him. The priest then carried Miller, and assisted other wounded prisoners on a lengthy march to a prison camp at Pyoktong. President Obama said: He carried that injured American soldier for miles, as their captors forced them on a death march. When Fr. Kapaun grew tired, he d help the wounded soldier hop on one leg. When other prisoners stumbled, he picked them up. When they wanted to quit knowing that stragglers would be shot he begged them to keep walking. Fr. Kapaun s selfless actions in the prison camp also included helping smuggle in more food, giving away his clothes to a freezing man, hammering tin into a pot to boil water to battle dysentery, praying with the men in their huts, and celebrating Easter Mass. With men falling sick all around him, Fr. Kapaun eventually got a blood clot that led to pneumonia and fever. Then, he recovered from the illness just long enough to be whisked off to the death house, where he died on May 23, 1951 at the age of 35.

5 Roy Wenzl is one of the co-authors of a biography called The Miracle of Fr. Kapaun. He states: One of the reasons the POWs and those who served with Kapuan in the military loved him was because he was not perfect, nor did he pretend to be. The soldiers said they disliked chaplains who pretended to be mightier-than-thou. They called them Holy Joes. Kapaun, on the other hand, shared in the hard work of digging latrines and carrying the wounded. He was not above any dirty job. He also had a wry sense of humor and sometimes a salty vocabulary. One time, he told a fellow POW that when God said we should forgive our enemies, he didn t have the cruel camp commander in mind; later, he told that POW he was wrong, that we must forgive our enemies lest we deny our faith. I think showing Kapaun having momentary lapses of faith makes him a more approachable person someone people who undoubtedly have their own lapses can relate to. Wenzl also said: Almost every single person who had contact with Fr. Kapaun was changed by him. All of them still pray to Kapaun, more than 60 years after his death. They all said they have tried to become better people, to emulate the life that Kapaun led. Some of them converted to the Catholic Church after they were freed from the camp. But even those who didn t convert know that their lives were touched by a very special man. Learning about this man gives a sense of how powerful faith can be, how it can sustain men, even in t h e h o r r i b l e conditions of a POW Camp. Kapaun, as the prisoners said, never walked on water or levitated off the ground. But he performed lower-case miracles tending to the sick and wounded, feeding those with no food, sharing his clothing with others, praying and blessing those in need works that all of us can perform if we have the faith and courage to do so.

6 In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated. After four years of bitter war, an armistice was signed. The war to end all wars was over. November 11, 1919 was set aside as Armistice Day in the United States, to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during World War I in order to ensure a lasting peace. On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war marched in parades through their home towns. Politicians and veteran officers gave speeches and held ceremonies of thanks for the peace they had won. Congress voted Armistice Day a federal holiday in 1938, 20 years after the war ended. But Americans realized that the previous war would not be the last one. World War II began the following year and nations great and small again participated in a bloody struggle. After the Second World War, Armistice Day continued to be observed on November 11. In 1953, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner named Alfred King had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who had served In World War I. The townspeople in Emporia, Kansas began calling the holiday Veteran s Day in gratitude to the veterans in their town. Soon after, Congress passed a bill introduced by a Kansas congressman renaming the federal holiday to Veteran s Day. President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law in In 1971, President Nixon declared it a federal holiday on the second Monday in November. But in 1978 it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11. On Veteran s Day there are ceremonies and speeches, and at 11 in the morning many Americans observe a moment of silence, remembering in prayer those who have served our country in the armed forces. Nuns Of The Battlefield The Nuns of the Battlefield Memorial in Washington, D.C. commemorates the service of thousands of nuns who educated, nursed and provided social services to hundreds of thousands of American soldiers during America s Civil War. The Sisters commemorated on the memorial are the Sisters of Mercy, Daughters of Charity, Sisters of Charity of Emmitsburg, Sisters of Saint Joseph, Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Sisters of Saint Dominic, Sisters of Saint Ursula, Sisters of the Holy Cross, Sisters of the Poor of Saint Francis and Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. November 11 is also the feast day of Venerable Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy.
