4 Pope Francis on GOSSIP: It happens to everyone, including me. Christians need to recover the value of meekness, particularly when they are tempted to speak ill of one another or gossip about each other. Complaining behind each other s backs is a temptation that comes from the Evil One who does not want the Spirit to dwell among us and give peace, meekness to the Christian community. Catholics today must strive to model their relationships on those of the earliest Christians, who truly lived the experience of having received a new life through baptism. The new life of the early Christians was expressed in that unity, unanimity, that harmony of feelings in mutual love. The virtue of meekness, which is a key to harmony, has been a bit forgotten. Meekness has many enemies, and the first is gossip. When one prefers gossiping, gossiping about another, it s like clobbering another. This is normal, it happens to everyone, including me it is a temptation of the Evil One. The struggle against such harmful chatter, is something that continually sows tensions in parishes, families, neighborhoods and among friends. Christians must not judge anyone because the Lord is the only judge. They should keep quiet, but if they must say something they must speak only to the person who could remedy the situation not the whole neighborhood. If, with the grace of the Spirit, we were able to stop gossiping, it would be a huge step forward, and it would do everyone good. I don t know why, but there is a dark joy in gossiping. Sometimes we begin by saying nice things about another, but then we slip into gossip, making the object of our chatter merchandise to be bartered. Let us ask forgiveness because when we do this to a friend, we do it to Jesus, because Jesus is in this friend. If one notices a defect in another, the Christian response is to pray that God will help him or her. I am a sinner. Pope Francis remarked to the cardinals who had just elected him by joking, May God forgive you for what you ve done! I am a sinner, but as this office has been given to me, I accept. I ask you to pray for me. I need it because I am a sinner, too, like everyone, and I want to be faithful to the Lord. Pray for me.
5 The Second Vatican Council was a beautiful work of the Holy Spirit. But fifty years later, have we done everything the Holy Spirit was asking us to do during the Council? The answer is, No. We celebrate this anniversary, we put up a monument, but we don t want it to upset us. We don t want to change, and what s more, there are those who wish to turn the clock back. This is called stubbornness and wanting to tame the Holy Spirit. This is called becoming foolish and slow of heart. To speak plainly, the Holy Spirit annoys us. The Spirit moves us, makes us walk, pushes the Church to move forward. We wish to calm down the Holy Spirit, we want to tame it and this is wrong, because the Holy Spirit is the strength of God. It s what gives us the strength to go forward, but many find this upsetting, and prefer the comfort of the familiar. A Christian isn t a person who simply follows some commandments, but is a person who tries to think like Christ, act like him, love like him. Being a child of God, a believer, isn t something Christians can set in a corner of the room and ignore most of the time. It implies a relationship with God that is deepened daily through prayer, reading the Bible, receiving the sacraments especially Reconciliation and Eucharist and through acts of charity. Being a Christian cannot be reduced to following commands, but means being in Christ, thinking like him, acting like him, loving like him. It means letting him take possession of our lives and change them, transform them, free them from the darkness of evil and sin. Fraternal love is the nearest testimony that we can give that Jesus is alive among us. How beautiful it is, after receiving Holy Communion, to think of our lives as a prolonged Mass in which we bring the fruit of the Lord to the world of families, to the neighborhoods, to our study and work. Thus we will also come to think of our life as a daily preparation for the Eucharist, in which the Lord takes everything that is ours and offers it once again to the Father. We believe in God who is Father, who is Son, who is Holy Spirit. We believe in persons, and when we talk to God, we speak with persons, who are concrete and tangible, not some misty, diffused god like godspray that s a little bit everywhere but who knows what it is.
6 Faith in the real presence of Jesus is a gift from God himself, and when he gives this gift of faith, we must continue on this path. However, if we take this path, it is always with our own baggage because we re all sinners, and we always have some things that aren t right. But the Lord forgives us if we ask for forgiveness. Let us ask the Lord, that we may grow in this faith, this faith that makes us strong, makes us joyful; this faith that always begins with an encounter with Jesus, and always continues throughout life with small daily encounters with Jesus. A good priest anoints his people with oil of gladness by preaching the Gospel with unction, that is, with the soothing, comforting words of God. If people leave Mass looking as if they have heard good news, then the priest has clearly done his job well. Let us never forget that the real power is in the service of others, and that even the pope, in order to exercise his power, needs to enter more and more into that service that finds its bright summit on the cross. Triumphalism is a great temptation for Christians. It is a temptation that even the Apostles had. Triumphalism is not of the Lord... it is not Christian. [ Triumphalism is defined as an attitude or feeling of superiority; boastful pride in the success or dominance of one s religion or ideology over others; the attitude or practices of a church that seeks a position of power and dominance in the world. It is self-puffery: I belong to the One True Church, and you don t. ] As Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio: Only we big sinners have the grace of knowing what salvation really means. Today we have one in the sheepfold and 99 we need to go looking for! Referring to the biblical parable of the shepherd who leaves his 99 sheep to find the one that is lost. The Church does not shine with its own light, but must be like the moon and reflect an external light, that of Jesus. When the Church is self-referential, unwittingly believing to be its own light, it is no longer the mysterium lunae, and leads to the evil that is so serious: spiritual worldliness. The Church, when it is self-referential, without realizing it, believes it has a light of its own. When the Church does not come out of itself to evangelize, it becomes self-referential, and then gets sick. The evils that, over time, occur in ecclesiastical institutions have roots in referentiality, a sort of theological narcissism. In the Book of Revelation, Jesus says that he is at the door knocking. Obviously the text refers to knocking from outside the door to enter. But think of Jesus knocking from within to let himself out! The self-referential Church seeks Jesus Christ within, and does not let him out. From Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio s speech during the pre-conclave General Congregations
7 I can wash the dishes tonight. When the future pope became an auxiliary bishop in Buenos Aires and visited the seminary there, the rector asked the bishop afer dinner if he wanted to say a few words to the seminarians. Bishop Bergoglio said, Yes. He then rose and said, I can wash the dishes tonight. After that, it became fashionable for the faculty of the seminary to clear their own plates. Excerpts from the book On Heaven and Earth A dialogue between Argentine Rabbi Abraham Skorka and Pope Francis, published while he was still Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires: Archbishop commits the sin of apostasy. Archbishop Bergoglio attended an ecumenical service in Argentina that brought 7,000 Evangelicals and Catholics together, where the Evangelical pastor asked Bergoglio if it would be okay for everyone to pray for him. The Archbishop knelt down to receive the blessing, and the next week a traditionalist magazine carried the picture under the headline: Archbishop commits the sin of apostasy. But the Archbishop was undisturbed, asserting that one can pray even with an agnostic: What s the problem? Archbishop Bergoglio expressed a healthy skepticism about claims of healing, revelations and visions, saying that God is not like Federal Express, sending messages all the time. The real tests of supernatural phenomena, he said, are simplicity, humility, and the absence of a spectacle. Otherwise, we may be dealing with a business rather than the presence of the divine. The problem is not whether you wear a cassock The pope evinces little preoccupation for externals: The problem is not whether you wear a cassock, but rather if you roll up its sleeves when you have to work for the good of others. When I visit nursing homes, I ask the elderly about their children, and they answer that their children cannot come to see them because they have to work they try to cover for their children. There are many who abandon those that fed them, who educated them, who wiped their bottoms. It hurts me, it makes me weep inside. In a chapter on economics, Francis says the Church condemns both Communism and wild Capitalism with equal vigor. He asserts that Capitalism harbors a spiritual perversion that seeks to tame transcendence, seeking to co-opt religion for its own ends. He warned that without a robust defense of the poor at its heart, Christianity risks becoming a lukewarm, weak and mediocre church. On abortion, the future pope insists that abortion is not a religious issue but a scientific one, since the genetic code of the person is present at the moment of conception, hence, killing that individual is not ethical.
