4 GOD IS LOVE God is love. On this solid rock the entire faith of the Church is based. Rediscover the joy of the faith, the joy of being personally loved by God, who gave his son Jesus for our salvation. To believe consists above all in entrusting oneself to the God who knows us and personally loves us... Despite our weaknesses and our sins, God loves us... God s closeness is not one of judgment that incites terror, but one of support and liberation. God is always with us. Even in the darkest nights of our lives, he does not abandon us. Even at the most difficult times of our lives, he is present. Therefore, we Christians can trust that we are never alone. The goodness of God never abandons us. Like a small child still totally dependent on his mother, but old enough to recognize his need, Christians must acknowledge their dependence on God. The image of the mother and child is a sign of the tender and maternal love of God. God does not hide behind clouds of impenetrable mystery... He has shown himself, he talks to us and is with us; he lives with us and guides us in our lives. Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them is a reflection of the reality of God s love, present with believers. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed. Each of us loved. Each of us is necessary. The essential nucleus of Christianity is found in the heart of Jesus: the saving love of God that invites us to step outside of ourselves and make ourselves a gift of love without reserve. God s heart throbs with compassion. People should not fear God, thinking he is always ready to punish, but rather they should love him because he is always ready to forgive. God is not a relentless sovereign who condemns the guilty, but a loving father whom we must love not out of fear of punishment, but because of his goodness. The Lord is a God who is just, but always ready to reveal himself as merciful and compassionate. God loves us in a way that we might call obstinate and enfolds us in his inexhaustible tenderness. The anger and mercy of the Lord alternate in a dramatic sequence, but love triumphs in the end, for God is love. God s passionate love for his people for humanity is at the same time a forgiving love. It is so great that it turns God against himself, his love against his justice. Here Christians can see a dim prefigurement of the mystery of the cross: so great is God s love for man that becoming man he follows him even into death, and so reconciles justice and love. There is a love in this world that is stronger than death, stronger than our weaknesses and sins. The power of love is stronger than the evil which threatens us.

5 In the heart of the Redeemer we adore God s love for humanity, his will for universal salvation, his infinite mercy. humanity. The love of God is infinitely greater, more faithful, more complete than any human love. The phrase fear of the Lord should be understood in terms of awe, rather than dread. In contemplation of the Almighty, the Christian does not experience servile fear, but a sincere and serious respect that prompts genuine and active adherence. God became a child. He made himself dependent and weak, in need of our love. Now - this God who has become a child says to us: you can no longer fear me, you can only love me. [No one, young people included, should be led to think that] it is possible all at once to live a 100 percent Christian life without doubts and sins. The Christian life is a continuing process of conversion, of stumbling, asking forgiveness and starting over. The process is a source of good for others as well because when someone experiences his own shortcomings and forgiveness of his faults, he finds it easier to accept the shortcomings of others and offer them pardon. [The apostles and first disciples weren t perfect, but had their own arguments and controversies.] This is very consoling to me, because we see that the saints did not drop as saints from heaven. They were men like us with problems and even, with sins. When the creed refers to God as Father, it is affirming a trust that the God who created the universe loves each individual and will never abandon anyone. It isn t always easy to explain to people what it means to believe in God the Father, especially when today s fathers and their children experience such difficulty communicating with each other. For those who have had the experience of a father who is too authoritarian or inflexible, or indifferent and not affectionate, or particularly if he is absent, it is not easy to think of God as Father and let oneself trust him. The Bible, especially the Gospels, reveals the face of God as a Father who loves us to the point of giving his Son to save Pope Benedict XVI, during his December 18, 2011 visit to Rome s Rebibbia prison, gave a short speech and then responded to questions from six of the inmates gathered in the prison s church. The pope told the inmates, I ve come simply to tell you that God loves you with an infinite love, and you are always children of God. The only-begotten Son of God, the Lord Jesus, experienced prison and he was subjected to trial before a court and suffered the most cruel death sentence. And he said, Wherever there is a hungry person, a foreigner, a sick person or a prisoner, there is Christ himself, awaiting our visit and our help. One of the inmates asked the pope why he had to go to confession for pardon instead of just getting on his knees and asking God for forgiveness. Pope Benedict responded, Naturally, if you get on your knees and, with real love for God, pray that God forgive you, he will. But sin doesn t disturb only the relationship between an individual and God. It also harms the community of the Church and wider society. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the great gift by which, through confession, I can receive real forgiveness from, and a full readmission into, the community of the living Church. GOD IS MERCIFUL
