For assistance, call , ext 1, or the parish office, Catholics must ask themselves what they have done lately to ensure that people feel welcomed and loved in the Church. The Church is the great family of children of God. Certainly the members who comprise it, pastors and faithful, have their defects, imperfections, sins. The pope also has them and he has many but what a beautiful thing it is when we become aware that we are sinners. We find the mercy of God. God always forgives. Don t forget this. God always forgives. God s plan is to unite all humanity into one family where everyone recognizes he or she is a child of God, and loved by him. The Church is born from God s desire to call all people into communion with him, to share in his divine life. Catholics should pray that their parishes and the entire Church will increasingly be a family that lives and shares God s love and mercy. Pope Francis The Church can never remain silent in the face of injustice, wherever it is clearly present. In the most difficult hours of your struggle for civil rights amidst discrimination and oppression, God himself guided your steps along the way of peace. Before the witness of history, the response of non-violence stands, in the memory of this nation, as a monument of honor to the African- American community of the United States. Today as we recall those who opted for non-violence as the only true effective approach for ensuring and safeguarding human dignity, we cannot but think of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and of the providential role he played in the rightful betterment of African- Americans and to the improvement of all of American society. St. Pope John Paul, II New Orleans, Sept. 12, 1987

5 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity ~ January Three Catholic reformers who sought to heal the divisions in the Church. St. Cajetan 1480~1557 Catholic Reformer Cajetan was born into an aristocratic family of Vicenza, Italy in He became a lawyer, was ordained at age 36, and engaged in the work of the Roman Curia. Before the Protestant Reformation, some in the church knew that the Church was in great need of reform. People were not getting the spiritual nourishment they needed from the large numbers of uneducated and even immoral priests who took their money but returned nothing. When good priests and lay people turned to the hierarchy for help, they found leaders at best apathetic and indifferent to their concerns. Acutely conscious of the widespread disorder and corruption in the Church, Cajetan was prominent among the Catholic reformers before the Protestant Reformation and during the Council of Trent, which was convened in response to the Protestant Reformation. Cajetan and three friends decided the important thing to do was to revive the spirit and zeal of the clergy. In 1524, with the purpose of providing better clergy he joined with Bishop John Peter Caraffa (who would later become Pope Paul IV) and founded the congregation of clergy called The Oratory of Divine Love. Its members prayed together, lived a life of poverty, and went out into the city to work with the poor. Cajetan founded hospitals for incurables, including one at Venice. The priests of the Oratory were given special training, and emphasized the study of the Bible. St. Cajetan told his brothers, In this oratory we try to serve God by worship; in our hospital we may say that we actually find him. With his own money and help from others, Cajetan formed a consortium, a bank of sorts, and extended loans to his parishioners and the poor, offering an alternative to the high interest loans of cutthroat bankers. Not surprisingly, the members of The Oratory didn t find thousands of formerly greedy and licentious priests flocking to their door. The Oratory was considered disreputable, and was roundly condemned and openly opposed by other clergy. But Cajetan and the others persevered and many were converted by their preaching and example. Later, Cajetan founded a congregation known as the Theatines. The Theatines were outstanding among the Catholic reform movements that took shape before the Protestant Reformation. Worn out by the troubles he saw in his Church, Cajetan fell ill. When doctors tried to get him to rest on a softer bed than the boards he slept on, Cajetan answered, My savior died on a cross. Let me at least die on wood. He died on August 7, Before the tribunal of God s mercy, we, the shepherds, must make ourselves responsible for all the evils now burdening the flock of Christ. We should take upon ourselves the sins of all, not in generosity but in justice; because the truth is that we are in great part the cause of these evils, and therefore we should implore the divine mercy through Jesus Christ. Cardinal Pole The pope s representative at the Council of Trent

6 St. Peter Canisius Catholic Reformer St. Peter Canisius knew how to defend Catholic doctrine without launching personal attacks on those who disagreed. Pope Benedict XVI St. Peter Canisius was the eighth Jesuit to make his solemn profession of vows. He played a vital role in the renewal and reformation of the Catholic Church in Central Europe. He believed that the Church s best response to the Protestant Reformation was to cleanse its own house and present the faith in a clear and attractive form. He wrote unprecedented letters of criticism to leaders of the Church (always in the context of a loving, sympathetic concern), complaining that an honest explanation of the faith would be much more effective than personal attacks against Catholics who became protestant reformers. He rejected attacks against these protestants with the words: With words like these, we don t cure patients, we make them incurable. He taught in several universities, established colleges and seminaries, and wrote a catechism, a fantastically successful work that went through two hundred editions and was translated into fifteen languages during his lifetime. The catechism explained the Catholic faith in a way which ordinary people could understand, a great need of that age. Another great contribution of Canisius was in his role as the first patron of Catholic publishing. While the excommunicated priest, Martin Luther, in his efforts to reform the Church, understood the potential power and significance of the printed media, the reformers within the Church were slower to seize on this technological revolution. (The printing press was invented around 1440.) Peter Canisius himself wrote many books, both for scholars and for a general audience, and in every city where he worked he was active in obtaining Church support for Catholic printers and publishers. This contribution was especially emphasized by Pope Pius XI when in 1925 Canisius was canonized and named a Doctor of the Church. Pope Benedict XVI said St. Peter Canisius knew how to defend Catholic doctrine without launching personal attacks on those who disagreed. In a historical period marked by strong tensions, he avoided and this is something extraordinary he avoided giving into disrespectful and angry rhetoric. This was rare at that time of disputes between Christians. Pope Benedict XVI said that St. Peter Canisius insisted that there was a difference between willfully turning away from the faith and the loss of faith that was not a person s fault under the circumstances, and that Canisius declared to Rome that the majority of German Catholics who passed to the breakaway movement of Protestantism were without fault.

7 If one must err, let it be on the side of gentleness. Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing is so gentle as real strength. Never confuse your mistakes with your value as a human being. Practice patience toward everyone, and especially toward yourself. Never be disturbed because of your imperfections, but always get up bravely after a fall. We are sometimes so occupied with being good angels that we neglect to be good men and women. To be merry without offending God is better any day than grumbling and quarreling. St. Francis De Sales Feast Day: January 24 Whoever preaches with love preaches effectively. This 17 th century holy man had a particular talent for making people interested in the spiritual life and directing their journey to God. He was educated in Paris, France and later received a doctorate in law at Padua, Italy. He then studied for the priesthood and was ordained in Nine years later, Francis was named bishop of Geneva, Switzerland, where he brought back to the Church more than 70,000 who had converted to Protestant Calvinism. At Francis death, a Calvinist minister said of him: If we honored any man as a saint, I know no one since the days of the apostles more worthy than this man. It was his spiritual direction which guided another very holy person, St. Jane de Chantel. Together, they founded the Visitation Order of Sisters. Francis spent a considerable amount of his time writing pamphlets and books for those who wished to be instructed in the faith. His Treatise on the Love of God was written for the Sisters in his Visitation order. His second classic, Introduction to a Devout Life, written for lay people, became, for many years, required reading for every aspirant to the priesthood. In his preaching and writing, St. Francis expounded a message of love and moderation which showed that holiness was possible for all people, not just priests or religious. In fact, some rigorist critics complained that he made it appear all too easy to become a saint. This sensitive 17 th century saint has left us with many often-repeated sayings: More flies are caught with a spoonful of honey than with a hundred barrels of vinegar. How displeasing to God are rash judgments! The judgments of the children of men are rash because they seize the office of Our Lord, the just Judge. They are rash because the principal malice of sin depends on the intention and counsel of the heart, and these are hidden things not known to human judges. They are rash because every person has things that could be judged, and, indeed, on which one should judge oneself. On the cross our Savior could not entirely excuse the sin of those who crucified him, but he lessened the malice by pleading their ignorance. When we cannot excuse a sin, let us at least make it worthy of compassion by attributing the most favorable cause we can to it, such as ignorance or weakness. We can never pass judgment on our neighbor. Everyone paints devotion according to his own passions and fancies. A man given to fasting thinks himself very devout if he fasts, although his heart may be filled with hatred. A man doesn t dare wet his tongue with wine or even water but won t hesitate to drink deep of his neighbor s blood by slander, vilification, and gossip. Another man thinks himself devout because he daily recites a vast number of prayers, but after saying them he utters the most disagreeable, arrogant and harmful words at home and among his neighbors. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow. The same loving Father who cares for you today will care for you tomorrow and everyday. Either he will shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginings. St. Francis de Sales
