7 St. Ann s Parish Divine Mercy Sunday April 3, 2016 Question: My father wants to be cremated. Is this permissible? Answer: The Catholic Church prefers that the body of a loved one be buried. There are, however, situations in which a family decides that cremation is a more suitable, or perhaps a necessary, form of burial. In the past, the Church did not permit cremation because there were groups hostile to Christianity that deliberately practiced cremation so as to deny the resurrection of the body on the Last Day. Since this is no longer a worry, the Church now permits cremation, provided it is not being done so as to deny the resurrection. If you should choose to have your loved one cremated, it is preferred and strongly urged that this take place after the Funeral Mass and not before. If cremation must take place before the Funeral Mass, the ashes, or cremains, should be placed in a worthy vessel. Your funeral director will assist you in this area. A proper burial in consecrated ground in a cemetery is a part of our Christian faith. The cremains must be buried in the same manner in which a body would be buried. It is not permissible to scatter ashes or to keep them in an urn on a mantle or tabletop. All cremains must be placed in a grave, mausoleum, or columbarium. While cremation is permissible, putting the urn containing the ashes of a loved on display is totally inappropriate. Objection: But these were my father s dying wishes. How can I betray him and not follow what he asked for? Response: Honoring someone s final wishes presumes they were thinking clearly and consistently within the context of what is legally permissible. For example, if someone s dying wish was that his body be placed in repose in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, the civil authorities will not honor that unless he meets the qualifications for such honor. Church law is similar. We are not morally bound to honor a loved one s request if it violates the dictates of our faith. I, for example, did not honor my grandfather s dying wish that he not have a Funeral Mass and that Masses not be offered for his soul. I could not as his grandson and a priest not celebrate a Funeral Mass for my grandfather, as I felt it was my moral responsibility to do so and that I would have been negligent in my own duty before the Lord of performing one of the spiritual works of mercy, specifically praying for the dead, and I overrode his desire not to have a Mass. I m sure when he stood before Jesus in judgment that he regretted making that request and was grateful I did not honor his wishes. So when our loved ones leave instructions that are reasonable, permissible, and given while of sound mind, by all means we are to follow them. If, however, their requests contradict the laws of the Church or of the State, we are not morally bound to honor them Catholic Elementary School Open House Save the dates: April 12 from 9:00AM - 11:00AM.
