September 6, 2018 The Board of Directors of the Catholic Health Association of Saskatchewan (CHAS) announces the resignation of Sandra Kary as Executive Director after 13 years with this organization. Having accepted an offer to move to another opportunity, her departure will be effective September 30, Although we are sad to see Sandra go after a long and distinguished career at CHAS, we wish her well in her new endeavours. Sandra began working at CHAS in March 2005 as the Communications Assistant. Under the mentorship of Sister Jo-Ann Duggan, who was the Executive Director at the time, Sandra became Assistant Executive Director in 2006, then Acting Executive Director in November She has been the Executive Director since July Under her capable leadership, CHAS has thrived as a respected faith-based organization committed to providing leadership, education and resources in ethics, mission, spiritual care, and social justice. During her tenure, Sandra also offered her numerous skills to organizations such as the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada, Spiritual Care Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Hospice Palliative Care Association, and Saskatchewan Catholic Connections. Catholic health ministry, both provincially and nationally, we will greatly miss her competence, work ethic, deep faith, and joyful nature. To assist in this time of transitioning, CHAS has named Marissa Alarcon as Acting Executive Director. Her service as Executive Assistant since October 2012, along with recent added responsibilities as the Program and Community Engagement Coordinator, gives us great confidence in placing the organization s leadership in her capable hands while we search for a new Executive Director. Thank you for your patience and support during this time. Chris Donald, Chair, Board of Directors
8 Question: Should our parish move to one Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings? Dear Parishioners, We have just concluded the summer schedule where Sunday Divine Liturgies were at 10:00 a.m. and were bilingual. In the past few weeks, several families have approached me to say how much they liked having one liturgy, and asked if we could have the summer schedule all year round. Therefore, the question of having one Liturgy on Sunday morning comes from our grassroots. It is important to note that the idea for one Liturgy did not originate from the pastors or church staff. It is not a desire to break from tradition. It s not about having less work for the Redemptorists. Some points people have made in favour of one Bilingual Divine Liturgy are the following: We have a large parish family. If there is only one liturgy on Sunday morning, I get to meet new people and see people who go to this church that I don t know. My children get to hear, learn, and appreciate both languages. We don t get to see Children of Mary serving at the 9:00 a.m. Liturgy. A 10:00 a.m. start time suits my family s schedule better. I like the mix of Ukrainian and English. It would be nice to have a full church. Other Considerations/ What we have heard so far: Tropars could be done in Ukrainian or English. We could have Feast Day Liturgies at 9:00 a.m. in Ukrainian. We have fewer cantors than before and they are being stretched. Parishioners who don t speak Ukrainian might feel left out. Some like a mix of languages. Others like only one language. Liturgy start times and frequency have changed with the times: For example: in the 1980 s, our parish used to have 3 liturgies on a Sunday morning. If we went to one liturgy, would church be too full, especially at a time like Solemn Holy Communion? Ukrainian hymns are important. The Fathers are helping out more in other parishes than before due to other clergy being sick or on vacation. Keep the current schedule. It s difficult to get here before 11:00 a.m. Accordingly, I have decided to consult with parishioners to listen to what parishioners think. I have consulted with or will be consulting with the following groups in the near future: Parish Executive Council Knights of Columbus Full Parish Council UCWLC Cantors and Choir Directors Seniors Organization I have also invited parishioners to the parish office with their thoughts. There will also be two Town Hall Discussions. The Town Hall discussions will take place on Sunday, October 28 th after 11:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy (a light lunch provided) and Tuesday, November 28 th, 7:00-8:00 p.m., both in church basement. The more consultations and voices heard, the better. We will create spaces to hear your concerns, and we want to listen. Everyone s voice matters. Consultations will continue through September, October, and November I hope to make and announce a decision by late November/early December. If a change is made, it could start in January Fr. Michael
