2 Beloved Parishioners and Guests, As Pastor of St. Joseph's in Winnipeg, I often slipped away to preach Lenten Missions. In my absence, Father Frank Szadiak, my fellow Pastor, who once served here in St. Mary's, appended his thoughts on Lent. Truly may I share them with you in this week's bulletin message: FROM THE On February 12 th, we begin the Lenten season - our preparation for Easter. Jesus has important advice for us as we commence this PASTOR S DESK or any religious observance. 'If you are bringing your offering to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering.' - Matthew 2: 3-24 That is why we try to right our relationships that have been impaired before engaging in any religious practice. Otherwise, our worship is not coming from a heart ready to do God's will and cannot be considered honest and sincere. And so the day before the beginning of the Great Fast (this year February 11 th ) is dedicated to the righting of our relationships in our day-to-day lives. It is known as Forgiveness Sunday, a time during which we humbly ask forgiveness of those that we may be at odds with or with family or friends that we may inadvertently have offended. The experience of asking forgiveness and of giving forgiveness helps purify our hearts and frees us to be receptive openly to God and others and not just to ourselves, as we observe the religious customs of Lent (Great Fast). In our church, this reciprocal Forgiveness Rite traditionally takes place after Vesper Service on Sunday evening. We, however, want to conduct this service during next Sunday's Divine Liturgies. Thus, many more can actively participate and that is great because we do form a parish family and we want all wounds and hurts to be put behind us so as, renewed sisters and brothers in Christ, we can prayerfully commence our spiritual journey to the Great Feast of Easter. In this ritual we ask forgiveness of one another and exchange the 'kiss of peace'. This humble practice can certainly be encouraged in our homes as well. We usually take our relationships at home too much for granted, but living in close quarters requires a lot of patience, sensitivity, and sacrifice. Sometimes we don't properly respect one another as we should. In fact, often it is times at home where the greatest offenses take place, simply because it is in the home that we are most frequently find ourselves. Children also need to witness their parents asking forgiveness of one another and of the children. They set the example and show us that love always means having to say: I'm sorry. When asking forgiveness is practiced regularly at home, children learn that everyone can fail at one time or another, but that God has given us a way of out of failure in His Love for us. -- Father Frank May our Lenten preparation for the feast of the Resurrection fill our hearts and souls with much love and peace and beauty and joy... (Genesis 1:31). The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year. This year, the people of Suriname, South America, want to raise awareness about climate change and caring for the environment. As a prelude to the World Day of Prayer there will be two bible studies focusing on our role as Christians in the world of God. Wednesday, February 7 and February 21 at 7:00 pm, St. Andrew's United Church Upper Hall. Please use the street level entrance on Smith Street. There is an elevator for those who have difficulty with stairs. You are encouraged to bring your bible with you. All are welcome. BISHOP VELYCHKOVSKY PILGRIMAGE TO UKRAINE A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY FOLLOWING A MARTYR S LIFE JULY 8-29, 2018 The Bishop Velychkvosky Martyr s Shrine is conducting its 5 th Velychkovsky Pilgrimage to Ukraine July 8th-29th, For 22 days we will be visiting places where Blessed Martyr Vasyl lived, worked and suffered. Some of the places will include: Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kovel, Kamianetz Podilsk, Kyiv, the Carpathian Mountains, Zarvanytsia,Pochaiv, etc. On this pilgrimage, we will have prayer services and hear stories of Blessed Vasyl s life as well as sight-seeing throughout Ukraine. Cost of the trip is $4500 CDN which includes: flights from Winnipeg to Lviv/Kyiv to Winnipeg, travelling in air-conditioned bus throughout Ukraine, accommodations, meals and attractions.
