3 Breaking open the Word 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time We all know the two commandments Jesus proclaimed when asked by a scribe which of the commandments in the Law was the greatest. Jesus answers, You shall love the Lord your God -- with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these," he said. To love God sounds good, but what does it really mean and how do we know if we re loving God? We must do the second part, love our neighbor. That s the test. Knowing the commandment is of no use unless we put it into practice. Knowing that two Tylenol pills will relieve your headache is still one step away from feeling better. Knowing that someone needs our compassion and forgiveness is still one step removed from reconciliation. Christianity is not a spectator sport. We must get in the game! Like Fr. Damien and Mother Marianne. People who volunteer in an outreach kitchen, who visit the sick or those in jail, who don t make excuses about not wanting to visit nursing homes because they are so depressing, who champion children and the victims of domestic violence, who dip into their checkbooks to support a worthy cause even though it hurts those people love their neighbor as themselves. Like the Scribe, none of us is"far from the reign of God." But, to actually step into the Kingdom of God, we must do what we say, practice what we preach, and live what we believe. Deacon Efrain Andrews Readings First Reading The Lord, the God of your fathers, will give you a land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:2-6). Psalm I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him (Hebrews 7:23-28). Gospel To love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:28b-34). He is telling us that we need to expand the list of those we are to love. He is telling us to have more passion in our desire to love others and he is urging us to prepare for how we will do that. Finally, Jesus makes it clear that we can't try to love money or honors and at the same time love God. We end the week Sunday as we watch Jesus admire the poor widow put her small change in the poor box. This is a wonderful background reflection for us this week. All week we can ask the Lord to help us. The quality of our asking will make all of the difference. Dear Lord, help me today when, in my busyness, I become self absorbed. Help me, in my intensity, when I take things personally. Help me, in the burdens I bear, to give up my escape into self-pity. Dear Lord, thank you for loving me and for showering so many gifts on me and my family. Help me to be more grateful and more generous. Today, help me to notice the needs of others. Help me to hear the news with more compassion. Help me imagine what I can do for others in need. I know the cost of discipleship with you will be easy when I remember your love. Dear Lord, I am really getting it that the lure of riches and honors can easily seduce my heart. Why is it so tempting to like and be with the beautiful people, the successful people? Why do I get tricked into these values and these ways of valuing myself and others? Let me choose simple, Lord. Let me choose solidarity. And, when I resist, let me know. These kinds of prayers, or the prayers that come to my heart in this or that daily situation - so simple to express to the Lord in 20 or 30 seconds as I walk down a hall or do any ordinary thing that allows me turn to God - can transform our days. These are words of intimacy, faith, trust, reliance. They acknowledge small graces and ask for bigger ones. They come out of a desire to grow in our relationship with the Lord and out of a confidence that with his grace, we can enjoy the blessing of being his disciples. Each night this week, let us give thanks. Creighton University Online Ministries All Souls remembrances Throughout November, we join together to remember our family and friends who have left this earth. All Souls envelopes are available in the sacristy and throughout November all those named on the envelopes will be remembered at each Mass. Together we pray for our loved ones who have gone before us and for their eternal peace.

4 Shoe drive We are assisting St. Michael s parish in Waialua in their drive to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes in a fundraising effort. If you want to help, donate used shoes in good condition. The shoes must be wearable (no holes or cracks) and have laces if applicable. If you have shoes to donate, please call the parish office. Food drive for Our Lady of Kea au The outreach ministry of Our Lady Of Kea au on the Waianae Coast weekly serves hundreds of hot meals to homeless individuals and families. Again this year, as a part of our outreach ministry, the parish of St. Augustine will be collecting nonperishable food items and toiletries to support the Outreach Ministry at Our Lady of Kea au through Thanksgiving. This annual food drive brings home to us the very real needs of so many of our brothers and sisters. We have supported the Franciscan Sisters who operate this outreach ministry for several years. Drop off your nonperishable food items and unopened toiletries in marked boxes in the church. St. Francis Healthcare programs on healthier living for seniors Understanding trusts, advanced healthcare directives, power of attorney: Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. Explore subjects that we often put off durable power of attorney, advance-care directives, living wills, estates and trusts. Speaker: Kristin Lambert-Bryant, a Honolulu estate planning attorney and lecturer on elder law at the University of Hawaii elder law program. Understanding Alzheimer s and other dementias: Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. Alzheimer s is a brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Learn about the warning signs and symptoms. Learn tips and techniques to use with your loved one. Speaker: Lyn Moku, Alzheimer s Association. All programs at St. Francis Kupuna Village in Liliha, Weinberg Building, 5th floor conference room. Damien Open House Damien Memorial School is hosting its annual Fall Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Faculty members from various academic departments will be available in the cafeteria for information and to answer questions about courses, extracurricular activities and athletics. The annual St. Marianne Walk! 6th Annual St. Marianne Cope Walk Saturday, January 26, 2019 Ala Moana Beach Park Morning program begins 7 a.m. Walk starts 7:30 a.m. All proceeds from the walk will benefit the new St. Francis Kupuna Village, a one-stop health and wellness center for seniors, caregivers and other family members in the heart of Liliha. St. Francis Kupuna Village already features a skilled nursing facility at Liliha. Next on the drawing board is a senior community center, where seniors can enjoy educational, social and recreational activities. Future plans include adult day care and adult day health programs, an assisted living facility with a wing dedicated to serving the Sisters of St. Francis, and an independent living community. Our kupuna have worked hard all their lives to lay a solid foundation for our lives and our community. Your donation will help to support them. To join a team or form a team please go to Lector workbooks available The 2019 lector workbooks are available in the sacristy. They are $10 apiece. Scripture reflection Our weekly Scripture Reflections are held at 6 p.m. Thursdays in the Annex Building and are open to all who interested in deepening their knowledge of and appreciation for Scripture. Please bring a Bible with you or a copy of the readings for the following Sunday. St. Augustine Closet open Nov. 10 The Altar Rosary Society Closet will be open Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 pin. In the Damien Room. Stop by for bargains, including clothing and housewares. Damien Crosses Damien Crosses are one-of-a-kind creations made by one of our parishioners, artist JoFay Umbhau, from driftwood, sea glass and shells. No two are alike and they are a true masterpiece of the sea and land for your island home or for our visitors to take home as a beautiful remembrance of Hawaii. They are sold after morning Masses most Sundays and in the parish office.

5 Initial work for Education Center begins All required permits for the construction of the Damien &Marianne of Moloka i Education Center have been approved and initial work has begun. As a result, entrance to the church and church grounds is now from Ohua Avenue only. The work area on the ewa side of the church will be closed to all traffic both foot and vehicular. Mahalo for your support as we embark on this exciting project.. Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo Mahalo to all who helped with Family Promise this month. Members of the Tongan Community cleaned the Makai House at Holy Trinity Church where the families stayed. Parishioners Christine Brotherton-Pleiss, Mike Pleiss, Duffy and Darren Okimoto, Malia Morales, Vainda Simiron, Bev Tavake, Jim Dannemiller, Barbara Okamoto, and Maki Gallagher helped by preparing dinner for the families on Oct. 27. The Altar Rosary Society donated Safeway gift cards for the families. Kiele and Kai Kraft, Malia Morales, and Darren and Duffy Okimoto donated toys and school supplies for the children. Family Promise is faith-based program that helps homeless families with children by sheltering them until they secure permanent housing. Families are also taught budgeting skills. St. Augustine is one of many support parishes participating in Family Promise; our parishioners provide assistance (e.g., preparing a meal) for families staying at Holy Trinity four times a year. The next Family Promise week will be in January. If you would like to help, please call the parish office at Donations of school supplies, including backpacks, notebooks, pencils, glue, scissors, etc.; toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner and body wash; and quart and gallon Ziploc bags and plastic cups are also appreciated. Damien & Marianne Of Moloka i Education Center The Damien and Marianne of Moloka i Education Center will be constructed adjacent to St. Augustine Church and will tell the story of Hawaii s two saints, St. Damien de Veuster and St. Marianne Cope, who ministered those with Hansen s Disease who were exiled to Kalaupapa.
