Father Damien was ordained at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, in Honolulu on May 21, His superior assigned him to the island of Hawaii, where he worked for nine years. In 1873, at the age of 33, Father Damien volunteered to go to Moloka i to minister among those diagnosed with the dreadful disease known as leprosy or Hansen s disease. After contracting Hansen s disease himself, he died on April 15, He wanted to die at Easter, so he said, to go through crucifixion, death, and resurrection with Christ. At eight o clock in the morning, Monday, April 15, 1889, 4 days short of Good Friday, he was dead at 49 years of age, almost 25 years a missionary priest of the Roman Catholic Church, 16 years pastor of a congregation of leprosy victims and 4 years and some months himself marked and known as a sufferer. Holy Man: Father Damien of Moloka'i - Gavan Daws His statue, the same as the one in front of the Hawaii State Capitol, is one of Hawaii s two representatives in the United States Statuary Hall. Pope Paul IV declared Father Damien Venerable on July 7, 1977, exactly 150 years after the first landing of the Sacred Hearts Fathers and Brothers in Hawaii. On April 15, 1989, we celebrated the Centenary of Father Damien De Veuster, SS.CC., Apostle of the Lepers. On June 4, 1995, Pope John Paul II declared Father Damien Blessed. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on October 11, Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

2 3rd Sunday of Easter Today s Reflection: Sometimes we worry Jesus is far away and cut off from our lives, but in reality he is very near, as two disciples discover in today s Gospel. They are on the road to Emmaus and full of sorrow after the Crucifixion. Jesus joins them but they do not recognize him. He explains the teachings of the Messiah and they later recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread. At every Mass it is the Eucharist that truly opens our eyes. When is the last time you thought of Jesus as distant, only to discover He is very near to you? Next Sunday s Readings - May 11, 2014 Acts 2:14a, Peter 2:20b-25 Jphn 10:1-10 THAT S NOT ME I will never forget my very first day of school. In those days, class sizes in Catholic grammar schools were quite large; my first grade class had fifty-two students. Our teacher made large name tags for each of us to wear that first day. Unfortunately, my name tag read Edward Gallagher. This is not my name. When I saw this, I tried to protest, Sister, that s not my... She immediately responded, Now, Edward, there will be no talking back to Sister. I tried again, But Sister... Her hands more than full with fifty-two of us, there apparently just wasn t time for this conversation. So, I went through my first day of school named someone I was not. I will never forget my mother s face as she stood on the front porch ready to welcome her first-born son home from his first day of school. She took one look at Edward Gallagher, frowned, and immediately went to the phone to straighten things out with the school. GOD CALLS US BY NAME This early life experience taught me much about the value and importance of my name. In today s Gospel we hear the Lord Jesus tell his followers that sheep learn to recognize the voice of the shepherd. They will not follow a stranger s voice. In the Rite of Baptism, the very first question put to the parents is, What name do you give your child? And just before the words I baptize you... the priest or deacon calls the one to be baptized by name. In a sense, we learn to hear our name called by God from the moment of our rebirth in the waters of Baptism. This is the root of all vocational calls, whether to marriage, the single life, holy orders or the consecrated life. On a day when we remember that Jesus is our caring Shepherd, let us listen once again to the Lord calling us each by name into loving service. Copyright 2007, World Library Publications. The Apostle s Creed summarizes the faith of the original Twelve, the actual witnesses to Jesus. The Nicene Creed is the result of two early councils of the Church, Nicea and Constantinople. There were over 800 hidden eggs and a multitude of goodies, toys and prizes for this event. Also, a Big Mahalo to all the youth and YM leaders who volunteered their time and energy in helping to coordinate this event.
