3 Breaking open the Word 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time During ancient warfare, grinding salt into the ground was done to ruin the land. The defeated people would not only starve for years; the land would be degraded. In an agricultural society, destroying the productiveness of the ground was the ultimate insult. This helps us understand how serious it is for Christians to lose their flavor. If we don't live out the Beatitudes (Mt 5:3-12), let our light shine (Mt 5:14), and be holy as Jesus is holy (Mt 5:20; 1 Pt 1:15), we do not just lose our flavor and risk getting thrown out. We even ruin the spiritual fruitfulness of families, churches, and people around us. Equally worrying is the ecological question which accompanies the problem of consumerism and which is closely connected to it. In his desire to have and to enjoy rather than to be and to grow, man consumes the resources of the earth and his own life in an excessive and disordered way.... Man, who discovers his capacity to transform and in a certain sense create the world through his own work, forgets that this is always based on God's prior and original gift of the things that are. Man thinks that he can make arbitrary use of the earth, subjecting it without restraint to his will, as though it did not have its own requisites and a prior God-given purpose, which man can indeed develop but must not betray. Instead of carrying out his role as a co-operator with God in the work of creation, man sets himself up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the part of nature, which is more tyrannized than governed by him. On the Hundredth Year (Centesimus Annus...), #37 The environment is God's gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility towards the poor, towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole... Our duties towards the environment are linked to our duties towards the human person, considered in himself and in relation to others. It would be wrong to uphold one set of duties while trampling on the other. Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate...), #48, 51 Living in right relationship with the Divine, each other and creation is paramount if we are the heirs of the Good News and wish to leave a legacy for the next generation. So, like salt a little goes a long way, be authentic in sharing your favor and don t be a hoarder. Psalm The just man is a light in the darkness to the upright (Psalm 112). Second Reading My message to you, says Paul, was not clever words of wisdom but the proclamation of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). Gospel You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before others, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). We use the stories about Jesus in the readings to help us. Because our days are busy, those stories make connections among what we are experiencing, God's Word to us and the desires that are coming to the surface in us. This week we can let this week's readings touch us, depending on what is going on in us. It begins with establishing a connection. With the briefest of rising prayers, we can talk with our Lord about what we anticipate needing that day. One day I might know that, with what I have to face that day, I need to ask that the healing Jesus be with me. I might be able to name what needs healing. Lord, you know the fear that is developing in me as I face this meeting today. Lord, take this anger away from my heart. On another day, I may know that I'm right in the middle of the struggle over my disregarding what God really wants me to do, using legalistic excuses to avoid God's will. I might beg, Lord, I've become such a hypocrite. Purify my heart so I can see as you see, judge as you judge and love as you love. Help me be truly religious, truly compassionate, truly your disciple today. On other days, I might be in a foreign territory, or at least one that seems quite a distance from believing territory. I might ask, Dear Lord, keep me safe here. Give me courage here. Help me find intimacy with you here. And let me see the faith of so many of your people here. Some day this week, let's imagine how Jesus has pity on our hunger and feeds us. And every night this week, let's express our gratitude for receiving what we asked for in faith, from the One who is waiting to give us what we need. Creighton University Online Ministries

These simple products are necessary because it promotes self- confidence when getting ready for an interview. Your donation is a simple contribution to changing an individual s life. Proceeds from the walk go to the Charity Care Fund to provide financial assistance to cover the cost of care for those who cannot afford it. Aunty Carmen s Kitchen: Helping those who are hungry In January, Aunty Carmen s Kitchen, the St. Augustine Parish ministry to those who are hungry, served 1,499 meals. This ministry is supported through the generosity of St. Augustine parishioners and our many visitors. Mahalo for all that you do.

5 Our Lady of Fatima statue tour Two additional churches have been added to the tour of the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima, sculpted by Jose Thedim in They are: St. John the Baptist in Kalihi (Feb. 5) and the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa (Feb. 5 & 6). Rick Hall, AKA Doc, has been a member of the St. Augustine by the Sea community since Doc is active as a Eucharistic minister, lector and a Knight of Columbus. He is also serves on the building and maintenance committee of the Pastoral Council and as a money counter. What would you like the Parish to know about you? The second of five boys, I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. My schooling was Catholic grammar and high school. When I graduated from high school, like many of my friends also felt as if I graduated from Church. I have swerved into numerous potholes on the road of life. In spite of myself, my God has blessed me beyond belief. My God is forgiving, generous and has a fantastic sense of humor. Gratitude, to be grateful what I have and not be overwhelmed about what I think I deserve. I love to golf, ski, travel, beach, snorkel, garden and landscape. I also work 1-2 days a week on the USS Missouri as a tour guide. I am married to Nancy. I'm a father of two grown sons, Navy veteran, and an ex-christmas tree farmer. Nancy and I were in South Lake Tahoe for 33 years, before we moved to Hawaii to thaw out. What do you hope to accomplish on the council? I was challenged to embrace new endeavors out of my comfort zone. It's been good for me. Let's talk, maybe it will be good for you too. I want to be approachable by all members of our parish. A goal would be to have all our parishioners intermingle more not just on Sundays. I would work for our parish to have an increased visibility in the community for all the projects we're doing as well as new projects. I will always work for those vulnerable members of our community, our family, our ohana. Page 5
