3 Breaking open the Word 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus Mercy and Love Many of us (myself included) often make light when talking about C & E Catholics, even more disparagingly referred to as Part-Time Catholics, --those who only attend Mass on Christmas and Easter and/or manage to make it to Pentecost, Mothers/Fathers Day, Ash Wednesday, and maybe Mass on their birthday. The trap many of us more devout believers fall into is that we separate these part-timers into a different category. Somehow believing that these people are of a lower rank, or not as Catholic as the rest of us. Sentencing them to shame because they only come to Mass out of obligation, or because they just want something. Such a foolish and extremely judgmental mentality this is. So in this context, what is most extraordinary about today s Gospel is not the actual miracles of healing the bleeding woman, or of bringing Jairus daughter back from the dead. What is most extraordinary is Jesus mercy and love for these part-time believers-- two desperate people who only came to Jesus because they needed something from him immediately. Notice Jesus doesn t pause to assess their devoutness. He doesn t ask how many times they ve been to temple, or if they came in on time. In fact, it seems as if Jesus desire to help anyone is automatic. With one touch, the woman was immediately healed. With one verb, the child arose. In our mission to Evangelize, to spread the Good News and to bring God to all those we meet, we must take to heart Jesus miraculous Mercy and Love. Especially for us here in the heart of Waikiki where the dynamics of all types of people converge in this beautiful parish. We mustn t judge sincere believers who come to worship. We mustn t subject those with a desire for Christ to be put through the hoops to be welcomed in. With one touch, we can welcome and lead people to God. With one word, we can give hope and inspire people to come to Jesus. With a merciful and loving heart, we can be extensions of Jesus in today s world. We can become fascinated by his pastoral care for those on the margins of society or his courage in the face of opposition. The more we watch Jesus, the easier it is for us to fall in love with him. Being drawn to Jesus with growing affection will ultimately lead us to want to be with him and like him. So each morning this week we can begin our day with a very brief prayer. Lord, let me see you, love you and desire to follow you more closely today. We might say, Drive away the demons that tempt my spirit today on one day and repeat that prayer at various times, especially when we are tempted to look good, or to escape into over-indulgence with food or drink or fantasies, or when we are tempted to let anger get the better of us. On another day, we might pray, Dear Lord, I get paralyzed sometimes - just stuck and unable to move. Free me today, by reminding me of your love and mercy. Still another day, we might ask, Let me respond to your call with the freedom Matthew had. We might turn to the Lord some day and simply say, Lord, I know you desire mercy and not sacrifice, please free me from the judgments I will be tempted to make today. Finally, I might pray, Lord, pour your new wine into me. Let me be a new wineskin to receive it. Give me the freedom today to let your word transform how I act and how I choose today. The key to finding intimacy with our God in the midst of our busy lives is to let God's Word interact with the real events and people who are there. No matter what our responsibilities are today, no matter how unrelated they seem to be to faith or devotion, and no matter how busy we might be, we can all let God's Word into the background, in brief moments of connection, conversation and intimacy. All it takes is desire and focus. As we practice using the background moments of our days, we will grow in experiencing that this intimacy is possible. And, when we sense it and enjoy it, and see what a difference it makes, let's not forget to give thanks each evening for the gifts we have received. 4 Pastoral Visit 2018 Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo to all who made Bishop Silva's visit to our parish last weekend a wonderful experience for everyone, even Bishop. Bishop senses that a sign of good leadership is when people feel welcomed, even if they are visitors. I am grateful that everyone who spoke, spoke from the heart and that was heart warming. But, let us also remember that now to implement the Pastoral Plan will be the challenge. Bishop mentioned several times that we must be able to do mission outside of ourselves, which is what we are doing. Let us pray for each to be faithful as Stewards of the Gospel. Mahalo again for truly weloming Bishop to our parish. Blessings and appreciation always. Fr. Lane Farewell to Fr. Benny Last week I was given a hand-carried letter (by Fr. Lusius Nimu, ss.cc.) from the Very Reverend Bonie Payong, ss.cc., Provinical Superior of Indonesia-Singapore Province. He writes to Very Reverend Herman Gomes, ss.cc. Provincial Superior of the US, RECALLING Fr. Benny back to Indonesia by August 1, This is the life of a religious. Fr. Benny will be on vacation from July Therefore, Fr. Benny's last weekend will be July28/29 before he leaves for Indoneisa on July 30. We will say farewell Fr. Benny with hospitality after all Masses on Sunday July 22. Please keep Fr. Benny in your prayers as he now will serve in his home Province. Pray for us as I don't know who will replace Fr. Benny. Fr. Lane Closet open July 7 The Altar Rosary Society is seeking donations of clothes, including aloha shirts and muumuus, for the Closet Thrift Shop. Items may be dropped off in the Damien Meeting Room Tuesdays between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. The Closet Thrift Shop is open the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Damien Meeting Room. The Closet will be open on Saturday, July 7. Help Knights clean our beaches The Knights of Columbus clean our beaches twice a month. The next beach cleanup will be Friday, July 6. They meet in the Church parking lot at 6 a.m. The cleanup takes a little more than an hour. Call Doc at to make sure we have enough equipment for you. 10th Anniversary of Priesthood Let us welcome Fr. Preston Passos (originally from this parish) and his family as he celebrates his 10th anniversary to the priesthood at the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday. I am grateful that Fr. Preston is a successful Pastor in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Please keep him in your prayers for many more happy years in the service of the Church. Fr.Lane Box jellyfish collection One of the current projects of the Knights of Columbus is the box jellyfish collection and information program. During the box jellyfish influx, the Knights pick up jellyfish that have washed ashore at Waikiki Beach and provide information to visitors and local residents about the presence of these members of the ocean community. So far this year, the Knights have collected more than 5,100 jellyfish. If you would like to join the Knights on their jellyfish project, they meet at 6 a.m. at the St. Augustine Church parking lot. This may take 1-2 hours. Contact Doc Hall at The next jellyfish influx will be from Saturday July 7 to Monday July 9. Damien Crosses Damien Crosses are one-of-a-kind creations made by one of our parishioners, artist JoFay Umbhau, from driftwood, sea glass and shells. No two are alike and they are a true masterpiece of the sea and land for your island home or for our visitors to take home as a beautiful remembrance of Hawaii. They are sold after morning Masses most Sundays and in the parish office.

5 Assisting those in need Mahalo nui loa for supporting Hope Services Hawaii in last weekend s second collection. Our parish collected $7,200 for our sisters and brothers in need in Puna. Continue to keep all who have been displaced by the Kilauea eruption in your prayers, even the National Guard and other government personnel assisting them. Ministers meetings in July There will be mandatory meetings for lay ministers in July on the following schedule: Monday, July 9, at 6 p.m. for Lectors Monday, July 16, at 6 p.m. for Eucharistic Ministers Monday, July 30, for Hospitality Ministers/Ushers These meetings are to help fine tune each minister s role, responsibility, and attitude to be of service. Ministry is a privilege given because of our commitment to Jesus. It is not meant to glorify ourselves but to give honor and glory to God for the gifts I have received as a steward of his. The meetings should be about an hour long. July 4 picnic! The annual St. Augustine picnic is on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kapiolani Park. Organized by the Tongan Community, the picnic is a festival of games, fellowship and great food! You won t want to miss so mark your calendars now. Games include Tug of war, egg relay, musical chairs, balloon toss, sponge relay, watermelon eating contest, limbo and much much more. Bring a dish to share if you wish. The picnic will be in area 5 of Kapiolani Park, near the tennis courts. See you there! Shoe drive We are assisting St. Michael s parish in Waialua in their drive to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes in a fundraising effort. If you want to help, donate used shoes in good condition. The shoes must be wearable (no holes or cracks) and have laces if applicable. If you have shoes to donate, please call the parish office. Save the Date The 2018 Damien & Marianne Catholic Conference, Share the Journey, will be held Friday, Oct. 5 to Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Hawaii Convention Center. Keynote speakers include David Haas, renowned liturgical composer and Director of The Emmaus Center for Music, Prayer and Ministry in Eagan, Minnesota. For more information about the conference, go to
