7 T his weekend we celebrated the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. The Church gives us this feast and next Sunday s Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ to sort of ease us back into Ordinary Time after the long ninety day stretch of the Lent and Easter. This is the longest stretch of Ordinary Time of the year, lasting 28 weeks. As we enter into this period of Ordinary Time, I will gradually introduce some newer hymns from our new Gather Third Edition hymnal. It s hard to believe that we ve had the hymnals in our pews for over two months now. During Easter Time, I used as much old music as possible to allow us to get acclimated with the basic layout of the book. Hopefully, you have noticed that it is pretty much laid out the same as our previous hymnal, and that has made navigating the hymnal very easy for you. However, during Easter I used two very nice new hymns. The first was entitled Ubi Caritas by composer Bob Hurd and the second was by Scott Soper entitled, Spirit Wind. Ubi Caritas was new to everyone in the parish. As I wrote a few weeks ago, Ubi Caritas is the title most used in our Gather hymnal. This setting is very flexible and can be used in many different places at Mass. We sang it as a communion hymn twice during the Easter Season. It actually worked out very well, because I had planned to use another piece, but with our choir rehearsal schedule, we were unable to prepare that piece. Then I came across Ubi Caritas with its simple, but beautiful refrain. This is a hymn we will use for a very long time. Last Sunday we sang Spirit Wind, for the preparation of the offerings. To most of our parish this was another new hymn, but some of you may have been thinking, I know I ve heard this piece before, but I just can t remember when. Well, if you have been to the Easter Vigil here over the last 16 years, you have sung this piece, only in a somewhat different setting. At the Vigil we use it as the psalm after the reading from Genesis about the creation of the world. When Mr. Soper wrote this piece, he wrote two different versions the one we use for the Vigil and the one in our Gather hymnal. The refrain is the same the verses are very different. So, if you heard this piece last week and thought it sounded familiar, that is why. We will use this piece quite frequently. THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE 7 Now regarding today s feast of the Most Holy Trinity: most of the hymns we sang were very traditional hymns: O God, Almighty Father, How Great Thou Art, and Holy God, We Praise Thy Name. I guess when it comes to hymnody, it doesn t get too much more traditional. I mean that in the very best sense. They are some of my favorite hymns to sing and, like many of you, I have known them since I was a young boy going to church with my parents. We also sang a new piece (even to me!) with very Trinitarian themes by composer Paul Melley entitled, Let There Be Light. This hymn is written in a very contemporary setting very different from the other hymns. It has a very catchy refrain and very nice verses as well. I hope you liked it. It s one of those refrains that will continue to stay with you throughout the week. If you don t recall, the refrain was Holy and blessed Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, and Might! Let There be light! Let there be light! This hymn may take a little longer to catch onto because of the style in which it is written, but it is another really nice text with not only Trinitarian themes, but also themes of light and love as well. Many, many months ago, I wrote about selecting music each week for our Masses. Each week I try to find a mix of both traditional and more contemporary hymns for us to sing. So, today, we sang mostly traditional hymns with one new hymn as well. Again, each week I am planning music to engage, hopefully, all the members of our assembly, ranging from ages I try to select a broad range of hymns that will appeal to all members of our gathered community. So, over the last two months since we have had our Gather hymnals in our pews we have sung three new pieces Ubi Caritas, Spirit Wind, and today Let There Be Light. Over this long span of Ordinary Time, I will continue to add slowly new hymns to our parish repertoire. I hope you are becoming acclimated with our new hymnal and like it. As we learn more new hymns, the hope is that you will like it even more. I am very happy that we now have this wonderful new hymnal to help us worthily celebrate the paschal mystery each week as we gather together as a parish family. Have a great week everyone.
8 Office of Christian Formation Amanda Weickert It would be my joy to meet with you; please feel free to call or schedule an appointment any time! FORMED IN FAITH REGISTRATIONS DUE If you have a child in grades K-8 who does not attend a Catholic school please register them ASAP for one of our Formed in Faith opportunities. We have Summer, Sunday, and home-study options available. Please contact me if you have any questions or if there is anything I can do to support you in the faith formation of your child! The JOY of LOVE Within the family which could be called a domestic church (Lumen Gentium, 11), individuals enter upon an ecclesial experience of communion among persons, which reflects, through grace, the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Here one learns endurance and the joy of work, fraternal love, generous even repeated for giveness, and above all divine worship in prayer and the offering of one s life (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1657). The Church is a family of families, con stantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches. In virtue of the sacrament of matri mony, every family becomes, in effect, a good for the Church. From this standpoint, reflecting on the interplay between the family and the Church will prove a precious gift for the Church in our time. The Church is good for the family, and the family is good for the Church. The safeguarding of the Lord s gift in the sacrament of matrimony is a concern not only of individual families but of the entire Christian community. Exerpt from paragraphs 86 & 87 from Pope Francis post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the family titled Amoris Laetitia, or The Joy of Love. Find the full document online at vatican.va. to LOVE as GOD LOVES By Amanda Weickert Originally posted on theintrovertedevangelist.com The Eucharist, and the Mass in general, isn t really about Christ. We are certainly offered the opportunity to draw close to Jesus in a real and remarkable way, but this is the how not the what at the core of the Mass. What is the primary action of the Mass? We, the Church, unite with Christ to worship and draw close to the Father. We participate in Christ s salvific sacrifice on the Cross in our Eucharistic sacrifice; we too die to ourselves in obedience to the Father. We offer not only bread and wine but also our own dreams, joys, sufferings - our whole lives - as Christ did on the cross. Christ s sacrifice on Calvary so many centuries ago forged a new path: a path offering not only forgiveness and mercy but deification! This is the path to the Father we too follow at the Mass and in the Eucharist. Today s Feast of the Most Holy Trinity reminds us that we do not seek Christ alone, but God in each of the three persons of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit! As we choose to unite ourselves to Christ and accept God s grace in the Mass, the Holy Spirit transfigures us on our own crosses, drawing us into a more loving and trusting relationship with the Father! This week let s try to ask Jesus help whenever we are struggling (even if this means asking for his help to remember to ask for his help - I certainly pray that a lot!) Seek the Father - Be an Evangelist! Jesus Christ, Sacrifice of the Mass, thank you for opening a new horizon of life with your Father to us! Help us to grow each day in love and humility so that we can love as God loves: patiently, generously, selflessly, eternally. Help us to grasp the hope you offer us - the hope that we too in all our fallibility can truly become just like you. Amen! 8
