6 F irst of all, I would thank everyone who made all of our Holy Week, Triduum, and Easter Liturgies very prayerful and solemn occasions worthy of the celebration of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you to all of YOU who came to celebrate some or all of the liturgies of Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Thank you for coming to pray, not only with your fellow parishioners, but the entire Church, and join in these very sacred days. Thank you to all of the ministers during those days, from all who welcomed and greeted those who came to the many other various liturgical ministers (lectors, extraordinary ministers of the eucharist, art and environment ministers, ushers, music ministers, servers ). You all helped to make our liturgies very prayerful for all who attended. Next, I am glad to announce that our new hymnals are here!! This coming Thursday evening at 7:00 in the Gathering Space we will have a blessing of the hymnals and then place the hymnals in church. We invite everyone to come to the blessing, especially, for those who donated hymnals. We invite you to come to the blessing, and then, you may take the hymnal(s) that you donated and place them in church where you normally sit. Many people have told me they want to donate, but, keep forgetting to bring their checkbook with them. You may donate to the hymnal fund at any time, and we will then make a plate and place it in the hymnal for you, but only those who have donated by TOMORROW, MONDAY, APRIL 4 will have their book labels imprinted by Thursday. Thanks to all who have already donated hymnals! Again, we will have a hymnal blessing this coming Thursday in the Gathering Space at 7:00. SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE 6 The hymnals will be in the pews for the first time next weekend. One thing you will notice is that this hymnal is set up almost exactly the same as our current hymnal. So, navigating our way through the book should be relatively easy. I am going to take time in learning new hymnody, but we will use a couple of new pieces during the Easter Season. I want all of us to see what wonderful new Alleluia! Christ is risen! Let us celebrate the feast! music is in the books right away, while at the same time, not overwhelming us with a lot of new music. Thanks again to all for making our Triduum celebrations such joyous celebrations of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. May we continue to celebrate during these great 50 days of Easter and may the words of last week s psalm continue to be on our lips throughout the entire Easter season: This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoiced and be glad. Have a great week. Week by Week Through the Year of Mercy ast year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared this L year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Francis challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. The clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is pardoning others. At times how hard it seems to forgive! he acknowledges. And yet pardon is the instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of heart. The necessary condition for living joyfully? To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge. May Divine Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made mercy our life s ideal and a criterion for our faith s credibility: Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy (Matthew 5:7). 7 Merciful like the Father This is the opportune moment to change our lives! This is the time to allow our hearts to be touched! When faced with evil deeds, even in the face of serious crimes, it is the time to listen to the cry of innocent people who are deprived of their property, their dignity, their feelings, and even their very lives. To stick to the way of evil will only leave one deluded and sad. True life is something entirely different. God never tires of reaching out to us. He is always ready to listen, as I am too, along with my brother bishops and priests. All one needs to do is to accept the invitation to conversion and submit oneself to justice during this special time of mercy offered by the Church. Excerpt from Misericordiae Vultus, p. 19, Pope Francis Apostolic Letter in which he proclaimed the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Vatican Translation. NOTE: FOR EASTER SEASION, START WITH P 15 Office of Christian Formation Amanda Weickert aweickert@stjohnsdr.org Do you need to talk through something or have and questions about our faith? It would be my joy to meet with you! Please feel free to call or schedule an appointment any time! Interested in joining a small group? We are all in a relationship with God right now - it is our joy and privilege as God s baptized children! But it can be hard to know how to live this out in our daily lives. One great way to grow in our loving relationships with God and others is by joining a small group. It can be very helpful to meet with others seeking to grow as well. There are no prerequisites we are all imperfect people who are trying to accept God s grace and become the best we can be for ourselves, our families and our friends! Contact me if you are interested in learning more! - Amanda Weickert, aweickert@stjohnsdr.org 7 to LOVE as GOD LOVES By Amanda Weickert Today it can seem that we are completely surrounded by violence and hatred. Even in just the past couple of weeks we have the horrific examples of people bombing Brussels and kidnapping and torturing a priest. The joy of Easter and the coming of Christ s kingdom can seem much too far away. It is easy to allow ourselves to be discouraged and think that peace is an unattainable goal, a fanciful wish only appropriate for beauty pageant interviews, but Christ reminds us in today s readings that he freely gives us, like the apostles, his peace. The first reading from Acts 5 describes how Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. Crowds of people were lining the streets hoping even the shadow of an Apostle would fall on them, and all those who came were cured. God is no less active within our own world! Like the Apostles, we are called to be Christ s peace in the world and within our own lives. Just as Jesus sent out the apostles after the resurrection he says to us Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. (John 20). I tend to underemphasize or avoid thinking about the spectacular things God can do through me. At least part of this is due to my own shame at how I have rejected God s grace through the many little (and I try to convince myself unimportant) ways on a day to day basis I choose to serve myself rather than allowing God to make me a convincing sign of His kingdom. But in my core I know that God s transformative grace is so much stronger than my own weakness. Even when the world seems dark and peace an unattainable goal we can echo the psalmist: Give thanks to the LORD for he is good, his love is everlasting! We too can be Christ s apostles of peace, giving hope for God s promised kingdom! Son of Mercy, Bearer of the Resurrection, gift us with the imagination to picture our world as you wish it would be. Help us to act always from within this vision of your kingdom so that each thing we do every day brings your peace. Grace us with the humility to accept your help in each moment and the hope we need to remember to ask for it as your apostles of peace.

8 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER High School Ministry A big THANKS to all of our high school youth who took time out of their busy schedules to be a part of the Living Stations of the Cross. This was the 17th consecutive year that the youth of the parish have put on this performance. They did an excellent job this year and it always gives our parishioners an opportunity to walk with Jesus during his Passion and draw closer to him. Young Adult Ministry The Young Adult Group at St. John s continues to meet on Tuesday nights at 7pm in the Youth Ministry room. We meet for Gospel reflection, great discussion, then fellowship afterwards. If you are in your 20 s or 30 s and wish to join us, please contact Rod at or just show up on Tuesday night! Also this Sunday night, our high school youth will continue on with the CHOSEN program. Starts at 7pm in the Youth Ministry room. Please continue to pray for them as they learn more about their Catholic faith and grow deeper in their love for Christ. Junior High Ministry Junior High Ministry Our 8th graders will continue on with their Theology of the Body class this Wednesday at 7pm in the Youth Ministry room. This is an awesome journey that they have been on which they are learning more about who they are and what their physical bodies have to do with their faith. Please pray for them during these last couple of weeks as they continue to learn and grow! A big THANKS as well to all of our junior high and middle school youth who were a part of the Living Station. They did an excellent job and were so thankful that they took time to put on this performance for the parish! 8
