This is an absolute requirement of the archdiocese. Virtus training consists of attending one meeting, reviewing the short, one page Virtus training bulletins once per month and a background check. Virtus training is required of anyone working with children. Plus, once you have this, the possibilities of volunteering to help in any capacity, is greatly increased! 6 I recently had the opportunity to spend a week in Houston with about 2000 other pastoral musicians from around the country when we gathered for the annual convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). This is the largest association of professional pastoral musicians in the country. Each summer many of us gather together for a week to renew our commitment to pastoral ministry and spend time with friends whom we often see only one time a year. The theme of this year s convention was The Church Sings: One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic. The week consisted of many opportunities for us to grow in our understanding of our ministry through plenum addresses, breakout sessions, choral reading sessions of each of the major publishers of liturgical music, and of course prayer each day including the liturgy of the hours and other offerings such as Taizé prayer. The highlight of each year s convention is the celebration of the Eucharist. It is an amazing experience to celebrate the Eucharist with 2000 other musicians, all raising their voices in song (often in constant four part harmony.) It is one of those events at which you need to be present to really grasp the magnitude of how wonderful it is. As technology has become ever prevalent, many of the events were live-streamed over the internet, including the opening event and each of the choral reading sessions. During the reading sessions, major publishers, like the publisher of our Gather hymnal, put together a choral packet of their newest releases of music and then all of us sing through that packet of music in about an hour. It s like a choir rehearsal, but on a much larger scale and again, with all present immediately singing each of these pieces in harmony. I was able to speak with someone who had streamed the GIA and WLP reading sessions online, but unfortunately the sound that came via the internet was not even close to what it sounded like in that room full of musicians. We sang through many nice pieces of new music written for use in Catholic liturgy. In fact, one of the pieces that we sang during the GIA reading session was a new Mass setting by another friend of mine, Tony Alonso, entitled Christ Light of the Nations, which we will be learning this coming fall at St. Johns. The convention, was a wonderful time of EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE 6 professional development, prayer, and f e l l o w s h i p with musicians from not only o u r o w n archdiocese, b u t f r o m around the country as well. Having worked in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for 22 years now, I ve been t o m a n y conven tions and, as it is with almost everything, some years conventions are better than others. But, even on the off years, it is a wonderful time to gather as an association of musicians all with the goal of fostering the art of musical liturgy. I am also very excited that next year the convention will be in our own back yard. Yes, for the fourth time, the national convention will be here in Cincinnati. Interestingly enough, Cincinnati has hosted the convention more than any other city in the country. The other years were 1985, 1995, and I was in high school during the first one in 85, but was present both in 1995 and in 2003, and of course plan to attend next summer. The main reason I wrote about the convention on this page today is because I wanted to share with you a little more how I spend some of my time here at St. John s, but more importantly to let you, the parishioners know that I am constantly striving to become the best pastoral musician that I can be and always looking for ways to continue in my professional development. Houston was truly a wonderful, but HOT week. I had a very nice time reconnecting with old friends and making some new ones as well and most importantly brought back with me a renewed understanding of my role as a pastoral musician and how to continue to foster that art of musical liturgy here at St. John s. Have a great week!!

7 OFFICE OF CHRISTIAN FORMATION BY: AMANDA WEICKERT Hello again, I m back! I have had a blessed and busy summer and I took a month off from some of the typical things I do, including writing this column, to focus on new opportunities and to refresh and rejuvenate myself (more on this to come!) I m happy to be writing again and I look forward to settling back into the rhythm of the school year. One of the summer s many blessings was the opportunity to participate in a conference on Theology of the Body. In a series of Wednesday audiences Saint Pope John Paul II spoke about the beauty and dignity of our whole human person, body and soul. These audiences were collected together and form the Theology of the Body. (If you want to learn more about Theology of the Body Rod Dunlap is a great resource; I m sure he would be delighted to talk to you more about it as well!) On the last day of the conference we ended with Mass in the auditorium where we had been gathering all week. As we were leaving I asked one of the people who worked at the retreat center if they had a chapel I could pop in to pray for a moment. She answered that they did but that it did not have the Eucharist reserved in it. In one of those moments where words fly out of my mouth before I completely think through the wisdom of sharing them I blurted out That s fine. Christ is in us because we just received the Eucharist. The funny looks I received prompted me to ponder the truth about what I had just said. I didn t mean to imply that it isn t literally awesome that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist and in all the tabernacles around the world. On the contrary, I often turn to God s presence there to help me talk to him openly and freely (I feel a little silly at times talking to someone who I know is there but isn t physically there, that I can t see and hear and touch. We can always grow in faith!). But after spending so much time reflecting on the beauty, gift, and sanctity of our bodies I was struck by the breadth of God s presence within each of us after we accept him into ourselves in the Eucharist. Is Christ not more present within us, who are made in God s image and likeness, when we receive the Eucharist than when he sits in divine splendor in the tabernacle? Or do we truly believe as Catholics that we denigrate and lessen God s gift of himself to us by receiving it? 7 I think we could all benefit by reflecting on God s extraordinarily vivid life within each of us as His children, particularly after receiving the Eucharist. If we truly believe that God is really present in the consecrated Body and Blood, how much more present is Christ within us after we receive him in the Eucharist? We are blessed with our bodies, which animate our free will and give us the capacity to love and relate to others. This combination the vitality of Christ s presence within our souls and the freeing gift of our bodies truly incarnates God in our world! I in no way wish to imply that Christ is not truly, awesomely, uniquely present in the consecrated host. Nor do I want to give the impression that any human person divided from God s grace and presence is complete in isolation. Rather, I hope to emphasize how deeply nourishing and completing God s self-gift to us in the Eucharist is. We are both body and soul, and it is God s grace and life which animates the fullness of our humanity; Christ gives us his body so that we can both receive it and become it! Every Mass when the priest pours a bit of water into the wine he says: By the mingling of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. We the Church mean this! And it certainly gives us a lot to pray about. As we look around the gathering space after Mass next week may we be filled with the joy and wonder we have when looking at the Eucharist! Christ, Divinity Enfleshed, help us to recognize within ourselves the divine spark planted within us at baptism. Nourish our divine life with your Word and your Flesh! Help us to appreciate what you truly gave us on Calvary and continue to give us at every Mass. You are our true joy! Amen.
