The first book begins the story of three people Ron Hall and Denver Moore (unlikely friends and even unlikelier coauthors) and Debbie Hall, the wife of Ron Hall. The story is about true life gritty, down to earth, ultimately hopeful and also always surprising. It showcases God s ability to work through even the most awkward and painful circumstances to bring forth amazing changes. It is deeply moving, but never sappy or sentimental. The sequel continues the hard-to-believe story of hope and reconciliation, tells the ongoing story, and provides guidance on how you can make a difference to those in need. 2 BLUE JAY REVERSE RAFFLE All parishioners should have received a Blue Jay Reverse Raffle Form in the mail. Only 500 tickets are sold at a price of $100 each ticket. There are three early bird drawings for $1,000 each. The first early bird drawing is May 27. STEWARDSHIP FOR THE WEEK I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." JOHN 13:34 It is easy to love someone when they love us back. But it takes courage to love someone when we feel unappreciated, used or feel our opinion doesn t matter. It takes courage to love my neighbor when he may be someone I don t like, someone I don t know or someone who doesn t look like me. 4

6 T his weekend we heard some of the simplest words ever spoken by Jesus in the Gospels, yet probably the hardest to live out in our everyday lives. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. So, it is fitting that we sang the following words at Mass this weekend: Ubi caritas, est vera, est vera; Deus ibi est, Deus, ibi est. The English translation of this text is basically where there is true charity, God is present. Now, when we normally think of the word charity, we often come up with a different meaning. In fact, according to Webster s, the word charity means the voluntary giving of help, typically in the form of money to those in need. But, in the Bible, the word charity most frequently means to love. So, basically we sang where there is true LOVE, God is present. An interesting fact about these words Ubi Caritas. There are more pieces of music in our Gather hymnal entitled Ubi Caritas than any other texts. There are four pieces of music with this text. There is the hymn we sang as our communion hymn today. There is the traditional Latin chant as well as a Taizé refrain. And finally, the very well-known hymn based upon these words by Omer Westendorf Where Charity and Love Prevail is also found in our hymnal. So, obviously, the editors of our book felt these words are very important ones for us to T his Sunday s Youth Jubilee previews July s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, Blessed are the merciful, echoes Pope Francis warning that the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture. In countercultural witness, therefore, the time has come, says Francis, for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Jesus affirms the same in today s Gospel. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another (John 13:34). Francis concludes, The Church s very FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE 6 have on our lips very frequently. Another bit of liturgical trivia for you. There is only one place in the entire Roman Missal where a song is specifically stated to be sung at a certain time at any Mass. Most of the time, the Roman Missal gives suggestions, any usually uses words like or another suitable hymn. On Holy Thursday, at the Mass of the Lord s Supper, the Roman Missal states that for the preparation of the gifts the hymn Ubi Caritas be sung. Again, no where else, or for any other Mass is a hymn specifically stated to be sung. So these seem to be very important words for us to sing often. As we ponder again the words of Jesus, all will know you are my disciples if you have love for one another, let us try to continually have the above words constantly on our lips and in our hearts: UBI CARITAS, EST VERA, DEUS IBI EST. For truly: WHERE THERE IS TRUE LOVE, GOD IS THERE. Have a great week. Week by Week Through the Year of Mercy credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love. Jesus too asserts, This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35). Thus mercy makes young the Church, the world, and everyone. Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope (Misericordiae Vultus, 10). Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 7 Office of Christian Formation Amanda Weickert Do you need to talk through something or have and questions about our faith? It would be my joy to meet with you! Please feel free to call or schedule an appointment any time! Children s Faith Formation Programs for If you child does not attend a Catholic School now is the time to register for a faith formation program for the coming year! We have three great options this year, all of which are designed to help children grow closer to God through prayer, service, study, and the liturgy. Sign up now for one of these faith formation opportunities! If you have not received information and registration forms in the mail or have any questions please contact Amanda Weickert at aweickert@stjohnsdr.org as soon as possible. Registrations due April 30th. Summer Religious Education Program This summer formation program will run Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. June for children entering grades 1-8. Formed in Faith Sunday Program Held between the Sunday Masses (9:45-10:45) from September to April this program is for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Formed in Faith Home Study Program to LOVE as GOD LOVES By Amanda Weickert I don t know about you but my first reaction when someone reminds me that there are a lot of hardships to come isn t typically Oh, how encouraging! But in this Sunday s first reading Paul and Barnabas visited new Christian communities, strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God (Acts 14:23-24). Paul reminds the early Christians and us that a major part of spreading (and living) the gospel is how we respond to hardships. While a knee-jerk reaction of frustration or impatience may be understandable or even expected depending on the circumstances Paul reminds us that as Christians we are called to more. As we remember Christ s promise of eternal life in His kingdom we become free to respond with hope, patience, and generosity to even the harshest of situations. The message of the gospel (and our own conscious choice to accept God s grace) frees us from today s worries and points us towards the never-ending hope of eternal life with God. Today s difficulties don t have to be stumbling blocks for Christians because we remember that our true home lies in God! It is a real challenge to change our knee-jerk reactions into a hopeful trust in God. This week let us pause 3 seconds before we react to something and ask God to help us to respond lovingly, and see what happens! Be Hopeful. Be an Evangelist. Our most flexible option this program provides families with the same materials used in our other faith formation options to use at home. Jesus Christ, Savior of All People, help us to trust that even when we feel sad or alone you are with us. Thank you for your overwhelming blessings and tender care for each of us in every moment! Help us to respond to others with as much love as you give us, especially when things aren t going the way we would choose, and to have the grace of joy even in hard times. Amen! 7

8 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER High School Ministry Our high school program CHOSEN met this past Sunday night. The group had great discussion on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and learned how important it is in our faith journey. It was also Little Debbie Night (we have fun too!) and the group enjoyed that a little too much! The next CHOSEN night is Sunday, May 1 at 7:00 pm in the Youth Ministry room. This is open to all high school students so please join us! For more information contact Rod Dunlap at Young Adult Ministry The Young Adult Group at St. John s continues to meet on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Ministry room. We meet for Gospel reflection, great discussion, then fellowship afterwards. If you are in your 20 s or 30 s and wish to join us, please contact Rod at or just show up on Tuesday night! Junior High Ministry Junior High Ministry This past Wednesday, many of our eighth graders completed an eight week Theology of the Body class. The final class involved them making a commitment to Jesus of living a life of chastity during this time in their lives. They really enjoyed this class and learned much about themselves and what God is really calling them to do in their lives. Please continue to pray for this group of eighth graders that they may shine this light to all that they meet! This past Thursday, our eighth graders finished up their monthly Confirmation Prep. They did an excellent job steering through the new program by Dynamic Catholic called Decision Point. The eighth graders have worked really hard these past nine months in preparation for this Sacrament. Please keep them in your prayers as they will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday, April 28. 8
