It s a fund that began many years ago to remember our departed loved ones by providing fresh flowers for the church each week. In addition to the flowers, the Worship Commission has decided to help memorialize our dearly departed with a banner displayed in the Gathering Space. So when filling out your Flower Fund envelope for July, be sure to write the name of the person you would like to remember. Their name will be on the banner when it s displayed in mid-august. Thanks to all parishioners who have given to the Flower Fund in the past, as well as those who have donated to help ensure we have fresh flowers for Christmas and Easter. They really do help beautify our church and enhance our liturgy! 2

Parish Library Spot The Catholic Prayer Book compiled by Monsignor Michael Buckley is a collection of a wide range of prayers from the church s rich tradition, - including personal, family, liturgical prayer and prayers for special occasions. This book serves as a treasury of Catholic worship from ancient times up to the present day. 6 E ach week when I sit down to write this page, many things come to mind. Sometimes I write, unsure of the extent of everyone s knowledge of the Mass and the way our Missal and Lectionary are set up. So, as I begin this week, some may already be very aware of the following, but for some this will be, well maybe not new, but just a reminder of how our Lectionary is set up. As you may or may not know, we have a threeyear Sunday lectionary cycle. They are labeled A, B, and C. One year for each of the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke.) Then within each of these years some parts of John s Gospel are proclaimed. For example, this year we are in Year C in which we hear primarily from the Gospel of Luke. However, during the Easter Season we heard primarily from John s Gospel. In fact, with the exception of the Ascension, we heard from John from the Second Sunday of Easter all the way through Pentecost. The point is that over the course of three years we hear a very large amount of biblical texts proclaimed. BUT, also, it is only every three years that we hear these words from Luke proclaimed to us. This weekend, as in the past few Sundays in Ordinary Time, we have returned to the Gospel of Luke. Today we heard what I would guess to be a very familiar story to all of us. In the gospel Jesus asks his disciples, Who do the crowds say that I am? Later in the passage we hear the familiar passage where Jesus states, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. I would imagine, if you re like me, you ve heard this passage over and over again. But, here is why it is so great that we hear this now, after hearing it from Luke three years ago. None of us is the same person that we were three years ago. And, I would guess, none of us would answer the question Jesus raises or have the same reaction to Jesus command that we had three years ago. All of us continue to grow in our faith journey and our relationship with Christ. And, all of us have our own crosses that we carry daily--whether it s a cross of bad health, a cross of an addiction we can t get rid of, a cross of no job, a cross of broken relationships. The list could be endless. In addition, the cross we brought to church with us today may not be the cross that we TWELVETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE 6 brought three years ago. But, maybe it is. No matter what the cross is, we know we can bring it with us because Jesus assures us that He is right there to help us carry that cross. Along these same lines of hearing scripture anew, we can say the same thing about hymnody. Last week, I wrote about the Jubilee Year of Mercy and we sang some very powerful texts at Mass about the endless mercy of our God. Remember, as our Holy Father stated. God forgives ALL. And God forgives AL- WAYS. So we sang, I have loved you with an everlasting love. But did we allow those words to really sink into us? Sometimes when we sing a song that is SO familiar to us, the lyrics just kind of wash over us and we end the hymn without thinking about the words we just sang. I have loved you with an EVERLASTING love. Those were very powerful words. Today we sang one of my favorite texts. It s a text by John Bell entitled The Summons. The reason I like this text so much is that it raises so many questions to help us reflect on our discipleship and help us to grow and truly become a follower of Jesus. It s one of those hymn texts where you could take just one phrase from one of the five verses and simply ponder on that one phrase for a very long period of time. It s been quite some time since we ve sung this hymn. Again, I would venture to say that none of us is in the very same life-situation that we were the last time we sang this hymn. I realize that all of you are reading this after the fact. My hope would be that each of us might take some time this week and think about both the Gospel we heard proclaimed and the hymns we sang today and ask ourselves, How am I hearing these words differently now than I did three years ago? How am I answering the question Jesus asks in the Gospel now differently than three years ago? What do these words in the hymns mean for me today as opposed to the last time we sang them? Yes, that s a lot to take in. That s why we are blessed to be able to hear these words proclaimed to us every three years. Have a wonderful week!!

The JOY of LOVE In family life, we need to cultivate that strength of love which can help us fight every evil threatening it. Love does not yield to resentment, scorn for others or the desire to hurt or to gain some advantage. The Christian ideal, especially in families, is a love that never gives up. I am sometimes amazed to see men or women who have had to separate from their spouse for their own protection, yet, because of their enduring conjugal love, still try to help them, even by enlisting others, in their moments of illness, suffering or trial. Here too we see a love that never gives up. Paragraph 119 from Pope Francis post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the family titled Amoris Laetitia, or The Joy of Love. Find the full document online at vatican.va. Office of Christian Formation Amanda Weickert - aweickert@stjohnsdr.org It would be my joy to meet with you and discuss our beautiful faith! Please feel free to call or schedule an appointment any time! PRAYERS NEEDED FOR OUR STUDENTS Please keep all of the students, teachers, and families participating in our Religious Education Summer Program in your prayers, particularly as we meet from June 13th through the 24th. Nothing can be gained without God s grace! Your prayers are so powerful and a wonderful way to support the faith formation of these families! VIRTUS online bulletins Volunteers, please complete your VIRTUS bulletins online. Make sure when you go to VIRTUS.org you log in and then complete the training bulletin. If you do not log in and click on the article link under the training tab you may be mistakenly taking the weekly survey question which appears on VIRTUS homepage instead of the required training bulletin. Thank you! 7 to LOVE as GOD LOVES By Amanda Weickert Originally posted on theintrovertedevangelist.com Since I had to finish my vegetables before I could have dessert as a child it has been clear what foods are good for my body. We all know the basics of nutrition. Fruits and veggies are healthy, while sugary treats and salty snacks not so much! I know what I can do to improve my health, I just choose not to actually eat that way on a day to day basis. There are so many examples like this in my life: times when I make a little choice which I know is not the best choice I could make. Individually, this really isn t a problem. We don t want to be so concerned with little mistakes that we forget how deeply and eternally beloved we are by God! But when a little bad choice is truly one moment in an ongoing bad habit that prevents us from loving God, others, or ourselves, then we have a more serious problem. I am discovering that my habitual inability to make healthy food choices is rooted in a lack of love for myself. I don t recognize my own body as something precious and worth striving to protect, something worth so much more than the momentary pleasure of that late-night snack. I know, on an intellectual level that this isn t true but I don t act like I am of such infinite worth! In today s gospel Jesus said to all, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. I think Jesus is pointing out the sometimes harsh difference between what we know and what we do. When we are searching for the things that are truly and eternally important we can be our own worst stumbling block. In trying to feel alive we can fall into habits which at their heart divide us from Love (God) and the eternal life he offers us so freely! Next time I reach for the cookies I ll ask for God s help and say to myself: Treasure yourself. You are a gift worth cherishing! Jesus, freer of humanity, help us to know how precious we are. Remind us of how much you love us when we are about to do something which will divide us from true life. We need your help so much. Walk with us as we make each tiny choice today so that we can freely love you, others, and ourselves. Amen!

TWELVETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 8

What is a Warrior Weekend to Remember? In a way it is similar to a weekend retreat. It is a time for spiritual and emotional healing for the veteran and the veteran s family. Many veterans have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan wounded in body and/or soul. This weekend affords them time to connect with others, realizing they aren t alone and through God s Grace, they can overcome their wounds. What are we asked to do? 1. Pray for our veteran, Josh Brooks, and his family from now until July Write Josh a letter or card of encouragement and thanks for his service. These will be collected and presented to him during the weekend. There is a bin at the Welcome Center to collect letters and cards. Our goal is to gather at least 50 letters to shower him with our support and appreciation. 3. If you would like, please donate to our care package that we will send to his house to receive when he returns from the weekend. Others have sent items like gift cards, prayer cards, religious medals, quilts, blankets, spiritual and motivational books, etc. Visit for details of the event and how to get involved. A Prayer for Veterans God of peace and love, we pray for Josh Brooks and all those who have served our nation to protect and defend our freedom. OUR VETERAN JOSH BROOKS We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains Josh and all veterans. For you are Lord, for ever and ever. Amen. I am a 30-year-old male married with kids. I joined the Air Force out of high school and went into Security Forces. I volunteered for a 365 ILO mission with the Army. That took me to Baghdad in November of I Was injured in an EFP attack 5/14/07, where we also lost a warrior that day. Over twenty surgeries and extensive therapy have gotten me to where I am today. I retired from active duty November of I now work for the government with the Social Security Administration. 9
