3 STEWARDSHIP OF FINANCE JULY 26, 2015 COLLECTION REPORT Adult Collection (includes Electronic Donations) Children Collection Debt Reduction Flower Fund St. Vincent de Paul This Year to Date Last Year to Date Comparison to Last Year Adult Envelopes Children Envelopes Thank You! 10, , , , ARE YOU AWARE BY DONNA SUNDERHAUS ARE YOU AWARE that last week was corn day? We tried something different this year; we got 100 dozen on Friday and 200 dozen on Saturday. Had a good crew on Friday and just shucked and cleaned the corn; that way we were able to begin cooking right away on Saturday where in the past we had to wait on corn to get ready to cook. We still got a little behind but nothing like in years past. Saturday was wonderful; over 70 great folks showed up and many hands made for a lighter load for us all. We were finished shucking, cleaning, cooking, cooling, packing, freezing, cleaning up and all tarps washed and put away by 2:30 pm. Thanks is not enough for all of you who added this function to your calendars. Thank you so much!!! RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT SHOPPING CENT Back to school sales are already starting. Shopping Cent carries Meijer, Wal-mart, Target, Toys R Us, Walgreens, JC Penny, Kohl's and many more gift cards for uniform and other school needs. We can also special order Staples, LL Bean and Lands End for supplies, backpacks and school uniforms. Just leave a message on the hotline ( ext. 240) by Sunday evening and your order will be ready on Thursday or the weekend. Have a student going to college? We also carry Bed, Bath & Beyond gift cards for college dorm needs. Send your student to school with gas and fast food gift cards too! SHOPPING CENT is sold 1/2 hour before and after each Mass on Saturday and Sunday. STEWARDSHIP Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. Exodus 16:4 When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest. ARE YOU AWARE that while we are on Festival preparation; let me add that workers are needed in many booths, chicken dinner and donations are appreciated. There is a list in the gathering space of items needed. We are also looking for items to help stuff baskets for the Tisket A Tasket Booth. ARE YOU AWARE have set the goal of 5,000 food items to help with Food for All: Be Multiplied campaign to collect items from now to June of That sounds like a long time but that would be almost 100 items a week. We currently average from items so we need to step it up if we want to do our share. The items will go to Corpus Christi Food pantry. So check your cupboards, check the sales and let s see if we can get that number up some. See page 8 of the bulletin for more details. Thank you. I HAVE LEARNED that line by line, moment by moment, special times are etched into our memories in the permanent ink of everlasting love in our relationships. 3

4 THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE This weekend we sang the same gathering hymn as last weekend, All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly. Two weeks ago, we sang the hymn Come To Me, O Weary Traveler. Over these three weeks I have NOT used the melody or tune that is written in our Gather hymnal. For the past two Sundays we have used the hymn tune HYFRYDOL and today we used the hymn tune IN BABILONE. You may ask the question, why not just sing the tune written in our hymnal. I ll use this weekend s hymn as an example. All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly is a hymn text written by Sylvia Dunstan, whom I wrote a bit about last week. The tune in Gather is by liturgical composer Bob Moore. I think it s a very nice tune, but in subsequent editions of the Gather hymnal, this text is set to other hymn tunes. So, I figure why learn this specific tune, when at some point we will get new hymnals and this text is written to an entirely different tune. So, the past two weeks, I used the hymn tune HYFRYDOL and this weekend we sang the tune IN BABILONE ( There s a Wideness in God s Mercy. ) So, you might wonder how that works? I wish I could say I just do it, but it s actually pretty simple. Every hymn tune has a meter. Now remember a hymn tune is different than a hymn. An example I used a few weeks ago is Alleluia, Sing to Jesus is the name of the hymn and the text but not the name of the melody or HYMN TUNE. If you would look at the bottom of every hymn in Gather it will almost always in very small print say text and underneath that say tune. Next to text it will give you the name of the person who wrote the words to the hymn and the dates they lived. Or it may just have a b. and then a date. That simply is the date of their birth and given that there is no end date, it means that composer is still living (at least at the time the hymnal was put together). Next to tune you will normally see the name of the hymn tune to which this text was ascribed, and then usually some numbers. Again, I ll use the example of Alleluia, Sing to Jesus. The tune is HYFRYDOL and then it has the numbers D. This is the meter of the hymn. It s actually very simple. The numbers are the number of syllables in each phrase of the hymn. For example, in this hymn there are 4 phrases. The first one has 8 syllables, the second 7, the third 8 again, and the fourth 7 again. Then the D simply means double(d). So, in Alleluia Sing to Jesus there are 4 phrases with the above meter which is doubled. The great thing about hymns and meters is that you can use any hymn tune with a meter of D and sing any text to that hymn tune. That is why we were able to sing All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly to HYFRYDOL, because it has that meter. As I stated above this weekend (because I didn t want to sing HYFRYDOL three weeks in a row), I changed the hymn tune to IN BABILONE which also has an D meter. So, if you re ever wondering why what I m playing doesn t match what you re reading in Gather, that is why. I hope you found this helpful and have a better understanding of how hymn texts and tunes differ and how each tune has a specific meter which can be used for multiple texts. Have a great week!! 7 Our Parish St. John the Baptist s Parish was established in 1860, due to the large number of Catholic families in Colerain Township. Though, at the time, the distance to the nearest Catholic church was only five miles away, the residents wanted a church to call their own. Now, 155 years later, the Catholics of Colerain Township continue to call St. John the Baptist their own. One Faith, One Hope, One Love Building a Strong Diocese and Strong Parishes Parish Projects S t. John s is a growing community of faithful families, vibrant with the presence of God. We believe deeply in worshipping god in a way that is reverent, joyful, beautiful, and welcoming to all. We look, to one another as family when we join in prayer and share our time generously with each other and God. We look ahead to the blessings and challenges that await us as we continue to minister to our unique Catholic community. We look forward with hope and pledge to continue to serve and grow as a faith community. An enduring quality of many people who call St. John the Baptist their spiritual home is their commitment to charity and sacrificial giving. Our generosity is well known and this has allowed our parish to continue to respond to the changing needs of the Church. We now have an excellent opportunity to raise funds for our parish through the efforts of the archdiocesan campaign, One Faith, One Hope, One Love. This campaign will enable the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and St. John s to raise significant funds towards the current needs of our beloved parish. Our minimum need is 950,000 over a five-year period. St. John s will receive (20%) of these funds. Our share of funds will be used towards: Ensuring the church and school facility is environmentally sustainable by reducing our use of electricity Rehabilitation the parish center flooring Ensuring the church facility is handicap accessible Paying down on our outstanding debt Our Parish Goal: 950,000 Pledges to date: 586,570 Percentage of Goal: 62% 7

8 CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD PANTRY NEWS Food for All: Be Multiplied Archdiocese Response to Hunger Inspired by Pope Francis Pope Francis has made a call to action to end hunger by In conjunction with this upcoming visit to Philadelphia in September, we, as an archdiocese, will present the pope with a spiritual bouquet of 1,000,000 food items to be collected between now and next June. This food items will go to local food banks. In the Sign of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fish (as St. John called it in last week s gospel), Jesus fed over 5,000 people. A young boy gave Jesus a little (five loves and two fish) and he multiplied it to feed an impossible number of people. Each parish of the archdiocese is asked to collect 5,000 food items during this time for our food pantry at Corpus Christi. If everyone would give just a little a few times, we would easily match and even surpass this amount. Imagine how we would impact hunger in our own backyard! Thank you for your Support Simply Give Campaign Our Pastoral Area Food Pantry has been selected to participate in the Meijer 2015 Fall Simply Give Campaign at the Meijer Store in Colerain on Stone Creek Boulevard. The campaign begins on Sunday, July 19 and ends on Saturday, September 12. There will be donation cards at each parish and also at check-out aisles at Meijer. When you make a 10 donation with these cards at the check-out, Meijer matches that donation to be 20. Double Match Days will be September 3 thru September 5. When a 10 donation is made these days, Meijer matches with 20 and this comes back to the Food Pantry as 30. The Simply Give Campaigns have always been a very successful fund raiser for our pantry. During last Fall s campaign we earned 26,820 thanks to all of the parishioners and others in the community making a donation while shopping at Meijer. We re hoping to earn even more money with this campaign!! Pantry Items Needed The Pastoral Area Food Pantry is in need of the following items: noodles (in particular egg noodles), canned fruit, jelly, soup (any kind), Chicken Helper, canned ravioli and condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard and personal care products of shampoo/conditioner, deodorant and facial tissues. Any help you can provide with obtaining the above products is greatly appreciated and will count toward our goal. 8
