5 I ncrease our faith, the apostles say in our Gospel passage this weekend. How often have we spoken these words ourselves? Just three weeks ago we commemorated the 15 th Anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on U.S soil since the mid-20 th century. Add to that the countless acts of violence both here and abroad over the last several years, and it s very easy for all of us to say to the Lord increase our faith. Faith does mean many things. Merriam-Webster gives three possible meanings: 1) belief and trust in and loyalty to God; 2) firm belief in something for which there is no proof; and 3) something that is believed with especially strong conviction. I would surmise that the apostles were referring to their belief in the teachings of Christ and their belief in God. Perhaps that same lack or weakening of faith has happened to us over the course of our lives, especially over things we don t understand like incurable illnesses and death when they impose themselves into our lives. Do we not ask the Lord both how could this happen? and increase our faith. But, I would also suggest that, given the experiences of the world in which we live, we have also had our faith in the goodness of others questioned as well. It s hard to watch the news these days and, from Paris to Miami, again not question how these things can happen, or how our God could allow such events to take place. And once again ask the Lord to increase our faith. I often quote one of my liturgist friends Jerry Galipeau. Referring to this week s scriptures he writes: Do you ever feel your faith weakening? In the first reading the prophet gives us a checklist naming some possible causes; violence, ruin, misery, strife, and destruction. We can add to this listing: broken relationships, sickness, cruelty, MUSICIAN S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE 5 indifference, pain, suffering, and of course, death. But God encourages us through the prophet: Wait! The vision will not disappoint. If it delays, wait for it. The just one because of their faith shall live. In our Gospel passage, after the apostles (and we) have asked for an increase in faith, Christ tells us we only need to have faith the size of a mustard seed. During Mass today we sang the hymn We Walk By Faith If we had faith the size of a mustard seed... We sang the words: We walk by faith, and not by sight; No gracious words we hear from Him who spoke as none ere spoke; but we believe him near. Help then O Lord, our unbelief; and may our faith abound to call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found. Possibly even more importantly we sang these words at Mass today: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Sometimes I m afraid we let the words of the psalm sort of wash right over us and think of the psalm as just filler space between the readings like a small break in the action, if you will. But given our readings today, the words of the psalm could not be more beneficial to us for I believe that only when we allow ourselves to hear his voice that we can truly be open to hear what God is speaking to us. So, when things happen in our lives, and we feel our faith weakening and do ask the Lord to increase our faith, may be always have open hearts ready to hear the voice of God. Then, if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, our faith will abound and that faith will grow in limits heretofore unknown. Have a great week. Week by Week Through the Year of Mercy H ow long, O LORD? With Habakkuk s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life Sunday finds all life claiming sanctuary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk s day, with ruin and misery, destruction and violence,... strife and clamorous discord (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we unprofitable servants cry with the apostles, Increase our faith. But Jesus reply might be paraphrased, Not quantity quality. 6 Office of Christian Formation Amanda Weickert - aweickert@stjohnsdr.org It would be my joy to meet with you and discuss our beautiful faith! Please feel free to call or schedule an appointment any time! Formed in Faith Program Formed in Faith: Growing as God s Children is our new program for children in kindergarten through 8th grade. One aspect of this program is a group of three cards the kids take home and complete every day. They can then bring them back to our meetings for prizes! I hope that these tiny activities help them to recognize God s presence in their life, and how good and beloved they are. Over the next three weeks I will highlight the different cards. If you would like some for your own children or grandchildren they are available on the bulletin board in the gathering space, or you can contact me for more. Thanks! Amanda This The Saint in Me! card encourages kids to see how good they are and how much God loves them. We are all called to be saints, and God wants to help us out! On the back of the card are the 14 virtues we will focus on this year in class. This past week we learned about justice and St. Katherine Drexel, the first American-born US citizen to become a saint! The kids circle or color the virtues they were that day, and can write down something else good about themselves on the line at the bottom. Everyone is good inside, and this helps kids recognize that! 6 to LOVE as GOD LOVES By Amanda Weickert While I was discerning the religious life I spent several weeks with a cloistered Carmelite community of nuns where I became fascinated with their way of life. They are unabashedly and unequivocally focused on God and eternal life, even as they live their days within the cloister. By not having an outside work or apostolate, such as nursing, teaching, or any other ministry we typically associate with religious life, these sisters reveal how everything we do is, at its deepest core, truly a ministry. From the outside, it looks like the cloistered nun doesn t do anything for anyone outside her cloister. How could she, if she never leaves and they cannot enter? Through the weeks I spent living with them I came to recognize that this superficial isolation reveals the true depth of our inter-relationality. What the sisters are physically doing is of secondary importance, whether canning tomatoes or scrubbing floors. The primary value of everything they do is in their loving relationship with God and the salvation of the world. They weren t really canning tomatoes, they were loving God and their sisters, giving generously of themselves to strengthen these loving relationships. They knew it too; as they scrubbed the floor they loved everyone who walks on them, and as they tended the garden they reveled in God s abundant creation and the life it would bring to those who would later eat the vegetables they grew. Their housework and chores were important themselves, as it isn t good to starve in a filthy hovel. But they were clearly able to show me that everything truly does boil down to love. For them, a filthy floor would be better than one scrubbed with resentment. Love is the essential ingredient to make anything worth doing, and how to do it well. Our actions, like those of the cloistered nuns I came to know, have this same primary importance. Even beyond what we appear to be doing driving a carpool, working in an office, meeting with a friend the importance of what we are doing is primarily linked with how it strengthens loving relationships with God and those around us. As I strive to make good choices and grow into the woman I know God is calling me to be I ask: Am I choosing this out of love? Am I doing this with love? Let us pray each day that we can more frequently answer Yes! with a joyful heart.

Hard to believe but it will be here sooner than we think. We would like to ask the parishioners at St. John the Baptist, St. John Neumann and Corpus Christi to once again support our Thanksgiving dinner give away. Following are the food items that are needed for the Thanksgiving dinners: Canned vegetables, yams, fruit, gravy, Jell-O, cake or brownie mix, icing, boxed potatoes, and stuffing. We do not have the storage space to handle frozen turkeys this year but would gladly accept gift cards or cash to help us purchase the turkeys. Cash or gift cards can be dropped in the collection basket and clearly marked for the food pantry or dropped in the parish office.
