Our culture seems to be built around controversy, materialism, greed and humanism that has somehow replaced the Creator in favor of the creature. Even though these observations were made twenty-four years ago, they are still true today. Father Edward Carter, S.J. authored the book, The Pain and the Joy that offers us a series of reflections or meditations that can contribute greatly in helping us get our priorities back in line. A few of the fifty topics presented are being thankful, a sense of being overwhelmed, and facing the day s task. CHECK IT OUT! Hard to believe but it will be here sooner than we think. We would like to ask the parishioners at St. John the Baptist, St. John Neumann and Corpus Christi to once again support our Thanksgiving dinner give away. Following are the food items that are needed for the Thanksgiving dinners: Canned vegetables, yams, fruit, gravy, Jell-O, cake or brownie mix, icing, boxed potatoes, and stuffing. We do not have the storage space to handle frozen turkeys this year but would gladly accept gift cards or cash to help us purchase the turkeys. If you are able to donate some of the items above, you can put the items in the normal drop locations at your parish by Sunday, November 6. Cash or gift cards can be dropped in the collection basket and clearly marked for the food pantry or dropped in the parish office. Families will be signing up for Thanksgiving Dinners from September 19 thru October 27 during normal pantry hours of operation. Thank you for your generosity. 2

Stop by the Bell Tower before or after weekend Mass or check out our order form at to see what we carry. Call the hotline at ext. 240 if you want to order anything special. Luke 15:31 Our Heavenly Father gives us everything, including the chance to share in His eternal kingdom. Yet, like the Prodigal Son we are often lured away by the materialism of our society. Do we really want to turn our backs on all that God offers in exchange for a material wealth that has no lasting value? Shopping Cent is on sale every Thursday morning starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Parish Office as well as before and after all weekend Masses. 3

For more information or to register me at aweickert@stjohnsdr.org. 6 to LOVE as GOD LOVES By Amanda Weickert Last week I wrote about the importance of being wholehearted - how when Jesus calls us to be his disciples he is calling us to love and serve him. We have to put him first. But who can actually do this? I am definitely aware that I am not perfect! And God is aware of our imperfection as well (thus the Sacrament of Reconciliation.) So how can we, God s imperfect children, live out his call to put God first in our lives? I tend to make this question both too simplified and too complex. I want all my options to be either completely right or completely wrong, and to always make the completely right choice. But this doesn t describe real life. Virtue is not a binary equation. Making the right choice is rarely a true or false question either. We don t need to be so worried about making the perfect choice every moment we don t make any good choice at all! While discernment is certainly important for life s bigger questions, we can let the little things be little things, chose one of our often plentiful good options, and be happy knowing we are following Christ. Whenever we live out our desire to be like God we are following Christ! In this sense, each choice we make with God and love in mind is perfect. Every good thing we do is a step closer to God, even if there might have been a better option we didn t do. Yes, it would be awesome if we made perfect choices every day, but we don t. We are fallible human people - a people made in God s image and loved deeply just as we are, even in our imperfection. Paul reminds us in today s second reading that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life. Let us echo Paul s hope in our own lives. As we share Christ s love and joy with others we ourselves receive his patience and mercy! Thanks be to God! Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love! Help us to be patient with ourselves and others as we journey closer to you with every choice we make. Thank you for your great love and tenderness for us! You are our hope. Amen!
