4 EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD ARE YOU AWARE BY DONNA SUNDERHAUS ARE YOU AWARE they had a farewell party for Jesus just before they crucified Him? Actually it was a going away party, hoping that He would never come back. Everyone was invited, no invitations. They came from far and near; some because they loved their Master; others came out of a morbid sense of curiosity while those who hated Him the most brought the Seven Gifts of Easter. The First Gift was a blindfold (Luke 22-64). Those who were beating Him still feared Him; especially His eyes. They said a look into His eyes could haunt a man forever, so they blindfolded Him, disorienting Him and enhancing His fear, not knowing when the next blow was coming. The Second Gift was a scarlet robe that was provided by a Roman soldier (Matthew 27:28). They didn t place it around Jesus to glorify Him but to humiliate Him and bring dishonor to God as they beat Him. The Third Gift was the reed (scepter) (Matthew 27:2). They placed the reed in Jesus right hand as a mock scepter. They took off the robe and beat Jesus about the head and shoulders with the reed. The Fourth Gift was a farewell gift that, down through the ages, has become the symbol of the pain and suffering Jesus endured for all who love and follow Him. This farewell gift was given by a few soldiers who twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on Jesus bruised and bleeding head. (Matthew 27:29). The Fifth Gift was intended to be the farewell gift that would bring this party to its end. Instead, it was the gift that became a symbol of the gift of redemption for all mankind a wooden cross (Matthew 27:31). The Sixth Gift was the four spikes that held Jesus to the cross. Hideous, barbaric, horrible, inhuman, but all had their purpose. They were the spikes that held His feet to the cross so Jesus could not walk the land bringing the Gospel to the lost. And they were the spikes that nailed His hands to the cross so that He could no longer lay them on the sick and needy. The Final Gift was the wine mixed with gall some bystanders offered Jesus while on the cross (Matthew 27:34). Jesus declined this gift because it would lessen the pain of the cross. He wanted to be fully aware when He died. They thought they had succeeded in sending Jesus away forever when darkness came over the land and He gave up His spirit. But Jesus farewell party was in reality a welcome home party. In fulfilling the Father s plan for Him Jesus returned to His Father s side and opened the door for all mankind to join Him in Eternal Life. The seven gifts of torment and cruelty that were meant to mock Jesus and break His spirit have become the symbols of a living bond between Jesus and those who love Him..a reminder of the gift of life everlasting Jesus gave to us by enduring His suffering and death.
