1 Buddha s Wisdom Changes Your Life Rissho Kosei-kai Vol A The World of the Lotus Sutra The Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma T that time, the Buddha spoke to the Bodhisattva Great Strength, Now you should know that if anyone curses, abuses, and slanders monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen who embrace the Dharma Flower Sutra, that person will receive very great punishment, as I have previously taught you. But those who attain the merits, such as those previously announced, will have their eyes, ears, noses, tongues, bodies, and thoughts purified. Then, to give an example of what he meant, the Buddha spoke about the story of Never Disrespectful Bodhisattva. Long ago, there was a buddha named Majestic Voice King Tathagata. That buddha taught the Dharma to all living beings. After he became extinct, in succession, there were twenty thousand kotis of buddhas who all had the same title. And the teachings of the Buddha were ceaselessly preached all through the ages. After the extinction of the first Majestic Voice King Tathagata and after the end of the true Dharma, during the period of the merely formal Dharma, extremely arrogant monks had great power. At that time there was a bodhisattva-monk named Never Disrespectful. That monk bowed in obeisance before everybody he met, whether monk, nun, layman, or laywoman, and commended them, saying, I deeply respect you. I dare not slight you. Why? Because you are all walking in the bodhisattva way and are to become buddhas. That monk did not devote himself to reading and reciting sutras, but only to paying respect. Among the four groups who didn t understand his true intention were those who became angry and hit him with sticks, tiles, or stones. But even if this bodhisattva ran off and stood at a distance, he would continue to cry out loudly, I dare not slight you. You are all to become buddhas. Because he always spoke thus, the extremely arrogant monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen called him Never Disrespectful. When this monk was nearing death, he was totally able to receive and embrace the Dharma Flower Sutra and as its merits to obtain the purity of Chapter 20 Never Disrespectful Bodhisava the six faculties as described before. Therefore, having obtained the purity of these six faculties, his life was extended for two million billion myriads of years, and widely preached this Dharma Flower Sutra to the people. After his lifetime, he met two hundred billion buddhas who were all named Sun and Moon Light, and under their Dharma he preached this Dharma Flower Sutra. Through the causes and conditions so created, he also met two hundred billion buddhas, all equally titled King of Light and Master of Clouds. Under the Dharma of those buddhas he received, embraced, read, recited and taught this sutra to all four groups. As its merits, he obtained the purity of his six faculties and preached the Dharma fearlessly among the four groups. This Never Disrespectful Bodhisattva made such offerings to numerous buddhas, revering, honoring, and praising them. After planting such roots of goodness, he once again met many buddhas. And at last he was able to become a buddha as a result of his preaching the Dharma. When the World-Honored One ended this story, he revealed that Never Disrespectful Bodhisattva at that time was one of his previous lives and that the four groups, who always slighted that bodhisattva, were in the present assembly, and that they are now numerous bodhisattvas, monks, nuns, laymen, who will never regress in their pursuit of supreme awakening. 2 Guidance by President Niwano All Who Are Born Must Die by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai Shakyamuni s Experience of Impermanence February 15 is the date on which Rissho Kosei-kai holds the ceremony marking the day when, some 2,500 years ago, Shakyamuni entered nirvana. This observance of Shakyamuni s entrance to nirvana is, along with the anniversaries of the day of Shakyamuni s birth and the day of his enlightenment, one of the three important annual events for Buddhists, and while we praise his virtues on this day, we also take the opportunity to again reflect upon what matters most in life. In this regard, as Zen Master Dogen ( ) declared, The most important matter for a Buddhist is to be completely clear about the meaning of birth and the meaning of death. In other words, we should clearly understand the reality of life and death. The fact that all who are born must die, that death comes equally and indiscriminately to one and all, should be etched on our hearts. We need to be clear in our minds about this fact because it lets us know the preciousness of the life we now have and makes us aware of the value of our being alive. Incidentally, during morning recitation not long ago, I suddenly thought, Shakyamuni used his physical existence to tell us these things. As I have said before, Shakyamuni was no superhuman; he was born a flesh-and-blood human being, and he entered nirvana at the age of eighty. Shakyamuni, who expounded the truth of impermanence, himself lived out the very truth of what he taught: not only illness and death, but before that, sorrow at being confronted with the ruin of his country accepting such dire circumstances. Therefore, when I was reciting chapter 16 of the Lotus Sutra, The Eternal Life of the Tathagata, and read, The words of the Buddha are true, not false, I was struck by the thought that what the Buddha told us is the truth, not meaningless words. I then pondered anew the importance of accepting the truth of life and death as the highest priority in our existence. Shining Light into Hearts and Minds Everything that is born will someday die that is the essential course of nature, which is preordained and necessary. Yet when we hear this, the thought of death often captures our attention and makes us feel gloomy. However, without life there is no death, and so by being clear in our minds about death, we cast light on life. Life and

3 death are essentially part of the same thing: one cannot exist without the other. To take a personal example of something close at hand, I had to meet a deadline to finish the text you are now reading. Sometimes, I wished I could forget the date of the deadline, but if my time were unlimited, I might not ever have set to work on the text. Isn t this something all of us do too often? In Essays in Idleness, one of the classics of Japanese literature, Yoshida Kenko ( ) tells us, If we had the ability to live forever, how colorless our lives would be. Because we are impermanent, our lives are rich with color. Precisely because we know that our lives are limited, we lead purposeful lives and can concentrate on the matters before our very eyes. We may forget the truth of life and death, as Zen master Ikkyu ( ) described in this humorous poem: Tomorrow is another day, my mind was eased by this. I whiled away today doing nothing. Conversely, when we lead our lives supposing that tomorrow may never come, we fully experience each and every moment of life. When we can accept the fact of death in this way, we need not uselessly fear it or find the thought of it abhorrent. Furthermore, by doing so we can cherish the memory of those who have gone and our perspective becomes richer and deeper. We feel sad when those close to us die, but when we have been overcome by this sadness in our whole being, the strength to once again face life positively wells up within us, meaning that such sadness is an essential part of life. At the same time, being able to accept that life and death are parts of one thing allows us to reflect more deeply on the legacy of those who have passed away, learn from and praise their positive traits, and vow to lead our lives as they led theirs. This is just like our learning from Shakyamuni and looking up to Founder Nikkyo Niwano as our guide, thereby gaining renewed power to conduct our lives. 4 Smiles Are Like Flowers from Heaven by Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Happiness Shines Forth It was the first Parent-Teacher Association event on a Saturday morning at the start of our children s junior high school s first term. While that meeting was going on, the pupils were receiving orientation and electing their class officers. Afterward, both pupils and parents were to gather in their respective classrooms and get to know one another while enjoying snacks. Our eldest daughter was entering her third year, and our second daughter was beginning her first year at the school. As our eldest would be the first of our children to undergo the process of preparing for high school entrance examinations, I took part in the PTA meeting for her class, and in the informal get-together of our second daughter s class. When the PTA meeting finished and I went to the first-year pupils classroom, the children had not yet finished their business, so I was enjoying some lively conversation in the hallway with some of the other mothers who had become mutually acquainted during our children s primary school years. The week after next they ll be going on an overnight trip I don t like to think of the packing I ll have to do for that! said one of the mothers. At our house the parents are pretty helpless about things like that, but the children are very responsible since elementary school they ve all done their own packing for overnight excursions, I said. That s admirable, she replied, I wish I could organize things that way, but as you know our child is a boy, and an only child at that. I seem to have to do everything for him. I know that s not the best thing for him, but... What she said made me feel proud of how responsible my own children were. Still, at the same time, somewhere inside I felt ill at ease and a kind of restlessness spread across my mind. Are my children good, and is her son not good? Is it better to raise several children together, while raising an only child is not so good? Are parents who do everything for their children wrong, and parents who don t do everything right? I don t believe so. Thinking that way is illogical. Still, aren t you a good mother? Why not keep on doing things for your son as long as you can? I am sure you re an excellent parent and that your son is very lucky, I said.

5 President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano, she is mother of one son and three daughters. She seemed happy to hear this, answering, Really? Do you honestly think so? Absolutely, I replied. When you have raised him with so much love, he will no doubt grow up to be a nice young man. In fact, isn t it true that he s a good boy now? Prompted by my words, she went on to tell me what a thoughtful child her son actually was. When people call themselves a bad parent they are implying, That is why my child does not behave well, which is a denial of their own child. No parent does not care whether or not their own child is a bad boy or girl. When a person truly feels that he or she is a good parent, that feeling is reflected in both parent and child. Our goal in raising our children is to give them the ability to lead independent lives and be of service to others in society. However, there are many different ways to accomplish this. There is no answer to the question of what is always the right way. Most parents think of what is best for their child, and strive their utmost to raise their child well in their particular environment, at the same time wondering and worrying if they have done too much for the child or too little. But the truth is, it does not matter whether the parents can do enough for their child or cannot. If every situation is taken readily by parents to help them raise a good child, happiness is sure to dwell in that family. The theme for the informal get-together on that day was to have each parent introduce their child s strong points. 6 Spiritual Journey The Merit of Becoming a Member of Rissho Kosei-kai by Mr. Ashim Barua Sitakundo area leader of Bangladesh Dharma Center The following religious testimony was delivered at the Leaders Assembly of Bangladesh Dharma Center on July 6th, H ELLO. I would like to start my religious testimony by saying thank you to today s guests: Rev. Yasutaka Watanabe, chair of the Board of Trustees of Rissho Kosei-kai; monks; Rev. Norimasa Aritomi, director of Rissho Kosei-kai International of South Asia; members from the Sumida Dharma Center; and other members from all over Bangladesh. My name is Ashim Barua. I am a longtime member of Rissho Kosei-kai of Chittagong. I retired from a government job, and I m currently an area leader in Sitakundo. My elder daughter lives in Dhaka and is a doctor. My younger daughter studies at a national university. My wife does housework and supports my family. All of my family members are attending this assembly today. Now, I will talk about and share with you Mr. Ashim Barua the merit I have gained from Rissho Kosei-kai. I would like you to hear about my experience. In 1993 and the following year, some friends of mine and various other people told me that there is an organization named Rissho Kosei-kai at Pathorghata in Chittagong, where people gather and talk every Friday morning. One day I was invited there by a friend, so I visited Rissho Kosei-kai. After my friend introduced me, I participated in Rissho Kosei-kai s sutra recitation practice. After the sutra recitation, I also participated in hoza, and was impressed very much by it. For a week after going back home, I thought about the differences between Bangladesh sutra recitation and Rissho Kosei-kai s sutra recitation, as well as the hoza session in which I had participated. Every time I thought about them, I felt very happy. In hoza, I learned that I should share the worries on my mind, and I also learned how to solve problems. From that point forward, my practice as a member of Rissho Kosei-kai really began. When I started dissemination activities, however, my wife objected. She might have been thinking that I should have a part-time job after my regular work, which would help our family financially. But I had a strong will and I strove to do dissemination activities. My viewpoint and way of thinking have changed through guiding and supporting other members every day. As a result, my wife gradually started cooperating with me in Rissho Kosei-kai activities. Thanks to her cooperation, I have put even more effort into dissemination activities, and some problems that occurred in my family were solved thanks to the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai. Every day, I thought that I would

7 Spiritual Journey like to become a person who helps others, following the founder s saying, Change yourself, and the other person will change. Through guiding and supporting other members every day, I was able to rid myself of selfish feelings and become a person who could wish for other people s happiness. I learned that all my family could become happy, thanks to the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai. I put the teachings into practice and am doing my best, so that all my family members may become happy. Thanks to such dissemination activities, I had an opportunity to receive Gohonzon directly from President Nichiko Niwano in Then I qualified as a Dharma teacher in Moreover, I participated in the Leaders Seminar at the headquarters of Rissho Koseikai, and I m going to graduate from this education course this year. From now on, I d like to make use of what I have learned for the sake of dissemination. My elder daughter Arpita, who works at an orthopedic hospital in Dhaka, is a leader of the Young Wives Group. She and my wife participated in the Advanced Lotus Sutra Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand. Last year, the elder daughter and her husband received Gohonzon in Chittagong. I participated in the enshrinement ceremony in Dhaka with my wife and younger daughter. I was so grateful that I was moved to tears. As a parent, nothing could make me more grateful than this moment. My younger daughter is also doing her best in the activities of the youth group in Chittagong. Founder Nikkyo Niwano established Rissho Kosei-kai to realize world peace. I d like to be a person like him. Now, I work at the training center every day. To reduce the economic burden on my family, I walk to the center. Thanks to the Founder and my ancestors, I lead a very happy life. As human beings, we cannot avoid death. This is why we try hard to convey the wonderful teachings of the Buddha and the Founder to our children who have a long future, and recommend that they participate in the activities of youth group, youth seminars, and various kinds of meetings. If they learn more, they will definitely become great people who are active in the secular world. I m sure that we will be happy if we simply become members of Rissho Kosei-kai and practice the teachings. I have confidence to make such a statement because of my experience with my family. Thanks to the Founder and Sangha, I have been given the greatest happiness. Thank you for your attention. 8 THE TEACHING OF FOUNDER NIKKYO NIWANO Creating Good Soil M ANY things have to be tried for growing good crops. For example, a farmer may study which fertilizer works best. There are several variables that must be considered in growing an optimal crop. However, no matter how far technology progresses, it is impossible to actually create the seeds that produce a crop. Therefore, the most important thing in assuring a good crop is first to create a good environment in which good crops can grow. But the idea of creating a good environment is not confined to agriculture. It is also necessary to create a good social environment to foster good human beings. In addition, it is obvious that creating a good family environment is important. To create a good environment means to illuminate our own immediate surroundings by the teachings of the Buddha, thus making our surroundings better. At times, the world has seen deplorable politicians, atrocious crimes, and troublesome children. This situation can be compared with barren ground where good crops will not grow. In society, it is evident that not enough people work the land (show compassion) to provide enough nutrients, namely, the Dharma. We should work harder to grow good crops. From Kaisozuikan 6 (Kosei Publishing Co.), pp We Can t Choose How to Die, But We Can Choose How to Live T Column H E March 11, 2011, earthquake and subsequent tsunami in northeastern Japan took the lives of many people, and destroyed communities. The victims included many Rissho Kosei-kai members. They suffered alongside families of other survivors, who were left asking, Why did my husband die? or Why did my son lose his life? One of the Rissho Kosei-kai ministers for the affected areas tearfully told survivors, The true cause of death is birth. No matter how many good things we have done in life, or how many evil things we may have done, we cannot choose how to die. But we can choose how to live. If we do not know how to make the best use of life, our time on earth will be wasted. President Niwano says in his Dharma guidance for this month that we should be aware of the life we have right now, and I want each of us to lead a life that can shine light into the hearts and minds of other people. 9 Buddhist Conference for Peace and Harmony Held in Bangladesh A T the end of September, a group of radical Muslims attacked and destroyed Buddhist temples, as well as residences of Buddhist monks and laypeople, in southern Bangladesh. On December 15 the Buddhist Conference for Peace and Harmony in Bangladesh was held at a hotel in Chittagong in response to a call from Rissho Kosei-kai of Bangladesh. Some 110 monks and laypeople from 31 groups participated in the conference, including the major Buddhist monastic order in the country Sangharaj Nikai and Mohastobir Nikai and the country s ethnic Buddhists the Rakhine, Chakma, and Marma peoples. The participants issued a public statement saying that Buddhists would not retaliate, explaining their stance by quoting a verse from the Dhammapada, in hopes of breaking the chain of conflict from the Buddhist side. Moreover, the establishment of a committee was approved to begin organizing the Bangladesh Buddhist Conference, to which would be invited representatives of all Buddhist organizations in Bangladesh.
