11 Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 2009 Volume 50 Rissho Kosei-kai Coming to terms with Buddhism This month, we have wonderful news!! It is on page 8, so please look for it. Doesn t it seem like things never work out quite as you expect them to? Sometimes, I feel like saying, I can t stand it any more! I m fed up with the world! Actually, though, this world is a warm and wonderful place, where we are protected and surrounded by the Buddha s compassion. I m sure some people will say, Really? I don t think your idea of the world is realistic at all! But in this world, even after the Buddha s passing, many people cherished and preserved his teachings, worked towards a more peaceful society, and pledged to pass the Dharma down to generations to come. When you consider this fact, isn t your heart warmed with gratitude? And yet, we frequently pray to the Buddha for a better life in this world. If we live in a self-centered way, we may be too busy concentrating solely on ourselves, and, as a result, we may never sense the Buddha s protection. Let s cultivate our hearts to become Okagesama, so we can learn to be grateful for our lives, and for the support of others, with a strong desire to help them. This is much better than merely praying to receive the Buddha s protection. By the way, the title of this article, Okagesama means Appreciation for the fact that one s happiness is due to the cooperation of others ; at least, this is the literal meaning of the word. But this word includes a deep spiritual meaning as well. Kage means the souls of all the gods, the Buddha, and our ancestors. So, this word Okagesama expresses gratitude toward our parents and ancestors for having this precious life, which is blessed by the gods and the Buddha. Okagesama is a word that has its source in the Japanese peoples deep honor and respect for all spirits, gods, Buddhas, and ancestors, which goes back to ancient times. We have learned 12 special words together in this year s installments. I deeply wish that these words will manifest in a fruitful, blessed life for you. Sunday October 18th, the Oeshiki-Ichijo Festival was held near the headquarters of Rissho Kosei-kai in Tokyo. This annual festival takes the form of a lantern-parade, which commemorates and honors Nichiren; expresses our respect, acclaim and gratitude towards Founder Niwano; and seeks to reaffirm our determination to further practice the bodhisattva way. This year, about 330 members gathered from Rissho Kosei-kai branches in Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Mongolia, as well as about 230 people from 8 foreign countries who are currently living in Japan. Three Mongolian youth members made a declaration to start off the parade. The participants brilliant ethnic costumes gave added elegance to the procession. The synchronized grace of the performers, truly moving as one, left the audience deeply moved. Also, the day before the festival, a World Cup sports tournament, complete with trophy, was held at the Ome Retreat Center. Participants played the games such 10m relay ball toss and tug of war. The thrilling games ended with the victory of the Sri Lankan team. Their determined and friendly competition reminded us the Olympics, which symbolize world peace.
Guidance by President Niwano Awareness of Merits President of Rissho Kosei-kai Nichiko Niwano Some people say the Lotus Sutra almost sounds like an ad for patent medicine, since in this scripture the Buddha harps on the many merits of believing in and practicing his teachings. The Lotus Sutra certainly does contain many descriptions of merits, as in chapter 17, Discrimination of Merits ; chapter 18, The Merits of Joyful Acceptance ; and chapter 19, The Merits of the Teacher. What, then, are the merits of faith? According to legend, when the Chinese emperor Wu of Liang ( ) asked the great master Bodhidharma, an Indian Buddhist monk, known as the founder of the Zen School, about the merits of the Buddhist faith, he flatly replied, There are no merits. Emperor Wu probably asked this because he was thinking, in a very ordinary manner, that by seriously taking refuge in Buddhism, many of his wishes would be granted, and that such were Buddhism s merits. That is why Bodhidharma replied in the negative and said Buddhism had no merits. It seems that many people think of merits as Emperor Wu did, so Bodhidharma s reply has a profound meaning. It is certainly not the case, of course, that Buddhism is without merits. But Bodhidharma teaches us that what matters most is what we take to be the merit of embracing the Buddha s teachings. When I heard my senior teachers in Rissho Kosei-kai say, I m so grateful, I m so grateful, I would wonder, What are they so grateful for, anyway? Now, however, I realize that they knew from experience that the greatest merit of faith is grateful acceptance of all that happens around us, whatever it is. In sum, the merit of faith is capacity for gratitude. With faith in the Buddha s teachings, we no longer complain that things are not fair or good enough, and do not speak ill of others. Once we become aware of the many things around us that should make us happy and grateful, we can feel grateful for anything and everything. This is called the merit of faith. Yet, we cannot say that Emperor Wu would have been wrong to wonder whether the merits of Buddhism would include the granting of his wishes. Even if some people accept Buddhism only to have their wishes granted, their initial encounter with the Buddha is a good beginning, and if their experience of Buddhism does not stop there, they will certainly learn to be grateful. Of course, most people who have some painful or unpleasant experience cannot accept it gratefully. But it is also true that people who have no painful experience lack the opportunity to realize the significance of pain through faith, joy and gratitude. It is only by experiencing suffering that we can be aware of its meaning. If we are aware, then, when similar suffering happens, we can be grateful for it and finally grow spiritually enough to accept suffering as a merit. We benefit not only from the merits of Buddhism, but from the Buddha s divine providence. Although the merits of Buddhism can be different things, they are all given to us by the Buddha. Since the events happening before our eyes all accord with the workings of the Dharma, they can be called divine providence, or the blessings, protection, and invisible arrangements of the Buddha, all of which are permeated with the Dharma. When we realize this, we see that we are always surrounded by merits for which we should be grateful. As the Buddha says in the Lotus Sutra, I am always abiding here, teaching the Dharma. Likewise, our acceptance of every event of every day as a message from the Buddha will make all of them merits for which we are grateful. By realizing this, let us aim together to become people who are grateful for everything that happens in daily life. From Kosei November 2009 Translated by Kosei Publishing
In the Footsteps of the Founder K a i s o - s a m a n i N a r a i t e President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Kosho Niwano Kaisosama ni Naraite The teaching of Buddhism is not some beggarly thing that advocates any means available to save people from their immediately pressing suffering and trouble. At all events it teaches liberation based on Truth. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], special volume, p. 116) Founder Nikkyo Niwano, believed utterly in the Truth as taught in the Lotus Sutra. Most of us tend to separate our thinking, taking the attitude: The teachings of the Lotus Sutra are the ideal; real life is another, more difficult matter. The ideal and the real are two different things. We still end up thinking of things in terms of of our own personal values or in light of our own experience, and thus are unable to see the world of the Lotus Sutra. In fact, we do not really try to see it. Experience usually teaches us that when we do something good, something good happens to us in return. However, when we do a good deed and our situation improves a bit, we feel glad, but if some intractable problem arises, we become upset. We simply go on telling ourselves and hoping to see it proven that, though we can t be sure, things do seem to be improving. It seems to me we could do a lot better than simply repeat empty reassurances and assume that is what constitutes faith. The world of the truth of the Lotus Sutra is a world of complete emancipation, the root and the cause. The focus of devotion for Rissho Kosei-kai members is the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni as the embodiment of the eternal life that continues from the past and present and into the future and which animates every living being. We ask members to think long and hard about the meaning of this, and to sharply focus their faith upon it. (San Reizan Meiso [Meditations of Three Holy Mountains], p. 140) I once knew about a married women who was constantly running around seeking to help others, and whose greatest pleasure lay in leading others to the faith. At that time she had a teenage daughter who had been refusing to go to high school for a few years. She said to herself, All that I am doing is for my daughter s sake. If I do good for others, everything should turn out all right. So, from early in the morning until late at night she was always on the go. When the mother received guidance from her chapter leader and determined to try putting it into practice, her daughter would begin going to school again, but after a short while she would stop. This was repeated over and over. Because the mother was busily performing good deeds, she took it for granted that the source of her problem lay elsewhere, and sometimes placed the blame on her husband. No matter how hard she tried, her daughter simply would not be cured of her habit of staying home from school. She even started to feel harshly against the girl. The safest and most secure state is when we are being protected by the gods and the Buddha. What do we have to do so that the gods and the Buddha will protect us? All we need to do is to maintain ourselves in a state of mind in which we can receive the protection of the gods and the Buddha. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], vol. 4, p. 133)
One day, the Dharma Center minister addressed the housewife: What do you like to do best?, he asked her. Dissemination activity!, she replied. Well, then, what do you dislike most? Housework. I don t do very much housework. Hearing this, the minister said, So, you are basically doing what you like. Like mother, like daughter. Her daughter was not going to school just because she didn t want to, while she herself was performing bodhisattva practice for the benefit of others---did that mean they were alike? When she went home that night, she spoke to her daughter and asked her, What grade would you give me as a mother? The daughter immediately replied, I would give you zero. Characteristically, the mother lost heart, but resolved to do better and get better marks from her daughter. She began devoting more time and attention to the girl, coming home earlier and giving more attention to the housework she disliked. Day by day, her daughter started giving her better marks---5points, 20 points, 40 points. One day she sat down and asked her daughter, What about yourself? What grade do you give yourself? The daughter replied, I get the same as you. When you get zero, I get zero. When you get 20 points, I get 20 points. The mother suddenly realized that her goodfor-nothing daughter actually possessed the same acute sensitivity as her minister, whom she admired greatly and who had said like mother, like daughter. This girl is really something, she thought to herself. It was the first time she had truly thought anything like this about her daughter, and indeed she felt that she had come into contact with the girl s buddha-nature. From that moment onward, wherever she was, her daughter was never far from her caring thoughts. Because until then she had been a distant mother and had never really had such thoughts before, she also was happy to discover that she had such warm feelings inside, and felt her own buddha-nature budding into bloom. When faith enables a direct connection with the Eternal Original Buddha, only then will it begin to take shape as true liberation. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], vol. 3, p. 124) Around this time, a cousin came to visit and said to the daughter, If you want to go to college, you first have to graduate from high school. At that time, the girl did not seem to react particularly to this information, but the following day she suddenly started attending classes. She never missed another day at school. What brought about this turn of events? The Eternal Original Buddha wants us to discover the buddha-nature in others and in ourselves; this is what is expected of us in this life and is what allows us to graduate. Whatever happens after that is up to the Buddha. "When we have faith, we can resonate directly with the Buddha s heart. If we sincerely believe in the compassion of the Eternal Original Buddha, its power immediately begins working within us. This is the action of resonance, and it is the shortest path to buddhahood." (Shinshaku Hokke Sambu-kyo [New Commentary of the Threefold Lotus Sutra], vol. 6, p. 99) "Once we realize that the Buddha s legacy (his teaching) is ours for the asking and are willing to receive it, any one of us can swiftly attain enlightenment." (Shinshaku Hokke Sambu-kyo [New Commentary of the Threefold Lotus Sutra], vol. 6, p. 88) There is a limit to what humans can do. It is close to impossible for us by ourselves to solve every problem or to compel people to change who do not want to change. The best we can do is create good encounters and have a positive effect. When we become able to see the buddha-nature in others, our immediate problems begin to unfold themselves and tend toward a solution. When this happens, we no longer need to try to reform others or solve problems, because we now see everything as opportunities for our inner light to shine forth. The difficulties we face also arise from the Buddha s compassion, because they lead us to seek a deeper understanding of the Dharma, thus guiding us to a truly tranquil state of mind. Because all our encounters can enable us to learn more of the working of the Buddha, when we can discern the Buddha in our problems and in other people, we can begin to think of the Buddha as acting in our behalf. If we live in consonance with the Truth, the teaching
President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano. Mother of one son and three daughters. of the Buddha will bring us good results in the form of liberation. That is the world of Truth taught by the Lotus Sutra, which can save us completely, down to our roots. That is the essence of true faith. What exactly is liberation, anyway? I believe that it boils down to what gives each person true peace of mind and the will to live with hope. Thus, naturally, the form it takes and the manner in which it is achieved depend on the individual and the situation, and thus both are infinitely variable. (Kosei, March 1976, p. 11) Life is difficult at certain times for everyone. There can be no such thing as a completely carefree life. Achieving the attainment of liberation is not going to make your life suddenly carefree, starting tomorrow. That is because our suffering inevitably is necessary for us to experience in our present time and place. Liberation can result from the trouble and suffering we are now going through. The important thing is to have faith no matter what. Believe in the Buddha, believe in his teaching, and believe in yourself as someone who consistently desires the happiness of others. (Yakushin, Oct. 1981, p. 14) The founder has said, Buddhism is not about the Buddha liberating us; it teaches us to free ourselves through our own deeds, but that does not mean we can figure out how to do this in our own way and achieve it by ourselves. We may speak of liberating ourselves through our own actions, but this only happens when our spirits resonate with the wishes of the Buddha. When we enter the Buddhist path desiring to take even a baby step closer to the Buddha, that is when the world of liberation and being freed opens up to us. When you try to do it yourself, somehow you come up against obstacles and experience difficulties, but when you sincerely contemplate the protection of the gods and the Buddha and that divine protection comes to you, everything works out in ways that can seem positively miraculous. As you gain more and more experience in how wonderfully well things can work out when you come under the protection of the gods and the Buddha, your awareness of your ego-based self will gradually subside. 6 Spiritual Journey Aiming to be a leader like President Niwano Mr. Suman Barua Head of the Kolkata Hoza, South Asia Division Mr. Barua with members of the Kolkata Hoza (front right) It was four years ago that, by chance, I encountered Rissho Kosei-kai. That day, I was puzzled because I had been looking for a friend who was supposed to meet me. Then my cousin, who lives in Bangladesh, took me to the Chittagon Chapter (the current Bangladesh church), saying You can find him here now it s a very nice place. I had no sooner stepped into the Chapter than I felt a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I immediately sensed a feeling of mutual respect among all of the people there. Though I did not join Rissho Kosei-kai at that point, I kept thinking (even after I went back to Kolkata), this is the place I have been looking for. The next time I visited Bangladesh, I registered as a member of Rissho Kosei-kai. Rev. Teruo Saito, Head of the South Asia Division, as well as other leaders from Rissho Kosei-kai, happened to be there at the time, and I learned about the desire to be reborn in the current land during study training at the Chapter. In those days, I went many nights without sleeping, as suffering at both work and home weighed upon me. But, as I learned the teachings, I was able to develop a fresh perspective on my life in this world; I was able to see that my current situation came from a desire to be born in this place and time. Then Rev. Saito said to me, Though you joined Rissho Kosei-kai in Bangladesh, why don t you spread the teachings in Kolkata? I guided my family, relatives and acquaintances to the faith, and increased the scope of my understanding. The current total membership of Kolkata is 111 families. There are seven or eight leaders. Early each morning and evening, we gather at Kolkata Hoza, chant, and have Hoza. As I performed missionary work in Kolkata, I began been thinking about what makes an ideal leader. I found the answer two years ago, in the month of November. My answer was found in the serene figure of the President of Rissho Kosei-kai, who came to the Kolkata Hoza. My image of an ideal leader parallels the character of the president, who is very calm, and who accepts everything that happens unconditionally. We served the president a cup of tea and he drank it, appearing to enjoy it very much; but later, I heard that the tea was very bitter.naturally, we members felt very bad about this. But at the same time, we also appreciated President Niwano s deep benevolence. Even though I only communicated briefly with the President, his personality, which is very warm, made a lasting impression on me. My wish is that I may be a person like the president, who is always calm, and has such an open and welcoming heart. From Yakushin October 2009 Kaigai Fukyo Dayori - News of overseas dissemination Mr. Barua, in a session of the Dharma Leaders Training in Japan Shanzai welcomes your religious experience.why don't you share your religious experience through Shanzai with members all over the world?please send the script or inquiry to the address; shanzai.rk-international@kosei-kai.or.jp. Thank you.
The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano Favorable Interaction With Others Human beings, just like animals, are strongly influenced by the quality of their immediate surroundings. There is no doubt that we definitely affected by the circumstances around us. This is why spending time in a positive, encouraging environment is so important. For we Buddhists, taking refuge in the Three Treasures (the Buddha, the Dharma and Sangha) marks the starting point of our spiritual journey. As the Buddha emphatically taught, the sangha is of paramount importance among the Three Treasures. The Sangha is made up of people who seek to know the truth of human nature and the best way to live, and who aspire to reaching supreme enlightenment. Being around these kinds of people helps us to improve. Such a favorable environment will provide We are waiting for your contribution!! many opportunities to learn from, and be encouraged by, others. This encouragement will help us maintain our practice, even when difficulties make us feel like giving up. I heard if you want to raise a bush warbler that sings with a beautiful voice, you should put the bird close to another bush warbler that has a beautiful call; or, you could put the warbler close to a recording of a lovely, musical bush warbler s call. On the other hand, I once read a story in a book that said the Kajika frog, which makes a unique, refreshing sound, will, if put around ordinary frogs, change its call to sound just like theirs. So too, favorable interaction with the sangha is crucial to putting the Buddha s teaching into practice. From Kaisozuikan 3 (Kosei Publishing Co.) P Translated by Rissho Kosei-kai International A traditional technique for solving problems, practiced by Native Hawaiian people, is called Ho'opomopomo. The process is quite simple: to accept all phenomena occurring in front of us to take responsibility for ourselves; and to purify our subconscious by repeating the words; I am sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you and I love you. The world needs this technique now because people in these times tend to be egotistical, and to typically shift the blame for society s problems to the government We are more than happy to receive your suggestions. Anything, including themes or topics, are appreciated. If you have problems and let us know, we will try to respond to them in Shan-Zai. The contact address is at the bottom on this page. We look forward to hearing from you! or public administration. In such an environment, this technique can cause a real change in the perceptions of those who practice it. And surprising things begin to happen to these people. Everything is attributable to myself; put others first and The Dharma for confession and making amends. Have you ever heard these words? If we accept responsibility for everything that happens to us, and we never blame others, we will truly have been cultivating our hearts and minds. (Kotaro Suzuki) Rissho Kosei-kai is a lay Buddhist organization whose holy scripture is the Threefold Lotus Sutra. It was established by Founder Nikkyo Niwano and Co-founder Myoko Naganuma in This organization is composed of ordinary men and women who have faith in the Buddha and strive to enrich Rissho Kosei-kai their spirituality by applying his teachings to their daily lives. At both the local community and international levels, we, under the guidance of the President Nichiko Niwano are very active in promoting peace and well-being through altruistic activities and cooperation with other organizations.
