Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 2011 Volume 72 9 Rissho Kosei-kai Announcements on pages Chapter 5 of the Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma The Parable of the Plants After the Buddha delivered the Parable of the Rich Man and His Poor Son, the four great shravakas expressed their admiration for his great compassion and his use of skillful means. They then spoke gratefully of how the parable helped them attain greater faith and understanding. Then, the World-honored One said, Well done, well done, Maha-Kashyapa. You have done well in describing the real blessings of the Tathagata. Ultimately, however, the Tathagata manifests innumerable, unlimited blessings that you could never fully describe. The Tathagata is the king of the Dharma. Therefore he sees and knows the reality of all things. The Tathagata is able to distinguish all things and preach the teachings skillfully, according to people and occasions. The teaching leads all people to buddhahood, and reveals the Buddha s all-encompassing wisdom to living beings. After the preamble, the Buddha clearly explained, using the Parable of the Plants, the relationship between his teaching and the living beings who receive it. There are plants and trees of various and numerous kinds, with different names and colors. A dense cloud, covering the whole sky, pours rain down on all equally, at the same time. The rain allows them to receive enough moisture to grow, bloom, and bear fruit, each according to its own nature and kind. Though all grow in the same soil and are moistened by the same rain, these plants and trees are all different from one anothoer. The Tathagata is the great cloud covering the whole sky, and his teaching is the Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Founding of the Brazil Dharma Center On July 24, the Brazil Dharma Center held a ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding. In attendance was Rev. Yasutaka Watanabe, chair of Rissho Kosei-kai s board of trustees, as a representative from the headquarters in Tokyo. Sutra recitation was led by Rev. Kazuya Nagashima, minister of the Brazil Dharma Center, and a speech by Rev. Watanabe followed. For the first five minutes of the address, he spoke in Portuguese. Rev. Watanabe expressed his gratitude for the support of the members in Brazil, as well as other overseas branches, for the victims of the catastrophe in Japan. He quoted words from President Niwano s guidance and emphasized the importance of confirming the origin and foundations of faith based on the Verse of Commandment of The World of the Lotus Sutra rain pouring down on the ground. All living beings are represented by the plants and trees of various kinds, superior, middling, or inferior. The Tathagata knows that all living beings are equal in their true nature, and are liberated from suffering by the ultimate truth. But he distinguishes the differences between their hearts and desires, and leads them according to their capacities. The best way to liberate living beings from suffering is by instructing them gradually; therefore, the Buddha doesn t immediately teach them the full and ultimate wisdom. You are very rare, excellent people, because you were able to realize the true intention of all the buddhas preaching as it is appropriate to various occasions, and you were able to realize the true nature of this teaching, which is a very difficult task. The Buddha concluded with the following words, encouraging them strongly, To be honest with you, none of you shravakas have completely extinguished delusions yet. But what you are practicing is the bodhisattva way. As you firmly continue to learn and practice, every one of you is sure to become a buddha. the Seven Buddhas. Many guests from such religious organizations as the Focolare Movement, Church of Perfect Liberty, and Tenrikyo participated in the ceremony, and offered prayers. Congratulations to all the members of the Brazil Dharma Center on your 40th anniversary!

Guidance by President Niwano The Experience of Growing Older by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai As students of Japanese learn, each kanji character has its own meaning. Regarding the character for elder (pronounced ro) associated with Respect for the Aged Day, the Japanese holiday honoring the elderly celebrated every September, it indicates people over seventy years old, while another character (pronounced ki) is used for those over the age of sixty. Both of these characters convey the concept of growing older. When we are involved in our daily lives we may tend not to notice that our bodies are gradually aging, until the use of certain words reminds us that we are getting older, and then we begin to understand what is happening. Shakyamuni said, People who merely gain in years have grown old futilely and aged without meaning, and clearly stated that those who have become filled with sincerity, virtue, and consideration for others people of such deep compassion are considered elders. In Buddhism an elder is a practitioner of great virtue. Shakyamuni also left us these rather harsh words: Those of little learning grow old like cattle. They gain in flesh without increasing in wisdom. According to Masahiro Yasuoka ( ), renowned Japanese authority on Eastern thought, aging is the process that leads us to accumulate experience, deepen our thinking, and complete our lives, and to this end becoming older offers us the opportunity to develop our mental proficiency while continuing to learn something new. No matter what age we reach, making the effort to overcome our faults and shortcomings, and showing consideration toward others based on the wisdom we have already attained that is part of aging that should come along with the passing of years.

Having said that, it is a fact that many people seem to resent and strongly resist accepting the inevitability of growing older. Shakyamuni explains the law of impermanence with calm detachment in such passages as Time passes as day turns into night. The beauty of youth gradually takes leave of us. This is because he has such a compassionate mind and heart that encourage us to firmly grasp the lesson of birth, old age, sickness, and death the Truth of this world, so that if we do so, we need not fear the coming of old age and death, and can live each day to the fullest. Professor Ko Hirasawa ( ), former president of Kyoto University, thought of birth, old age, sickness, and death not as the four kinds of suffering but as the four joys. He commented that just as the year has four seasons, it is noteworthy that we experience birth, old age, sickness, and death and are able to find joy in each of them. Concerning death, Professor Hirasawa said, Life received from nature returns to nature it returns to being a part of nature, and again takes part in nature s development. Death is not a return to nothingness but a renewed participation in nature s continuing development. He accepted old age and death as representing the compassion of the Buddha. When we are able to consider these stages with acceptance as he did, we can perceive the significance of growing older and take joy in it. For example, when we have reached an advanced age and deepen our thinking and increased our understanding of life, we are able to say without hesitation things that could not be easily spoken when we were younger. In that regard, one of the roles of the elderly should be to bear in mind the important lessons they have learned and pass them on to the younger generations. Transmitting to future adults the joy of having been born in this world as a human being, along with gratitude and respect for the sanctity of all life, is a manifestation of the deepest consideration for others. This is a shining example of bodhisattva practice that we can perform verbally no matter how old we may become and even if we become enfeebled. Our attitude of striving to continue advancing to attain the wisdom that will enrich us spiritually as we gain in years generates the dynamic power that results in joy and appreciating the meaning of life that lasts throughout our lifetime. 4 Smiles Are Like Flowers from Heaven by Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Come on! It s my turn so give it to me! Just one minute more. It s my turn! Just a second. It s not fair! The children were playing together nicely until the situation suddenly deteriorated. Since there are four of us, we have to take turns, one said. At our friends houses everybody has their own toys, another added. The little squirt won t behave! Big sister is a bully! The group of four s foul mood worsened and they were heading my way. When I asked what was wrong, I received a list of how unfairly the one who was speaking had been treated and how badly everybody else was behaving. On top of that came the general dissatisfactions that had been building up. What a nuisance! Children without brothers or sisters have it better. Everything belongs to them alone. They don t have to share their snacks, either. They don t have to take care of their brothers or sisters. Four children in one family is just too many, that s the trouble! I think so, too! You re right! Mama thinks so, too! I said. What!? The bickering children had found something to agree on but were brought up short and all turned to stare at me. Expecting to be scolded, they looked a bit startled at hearing me agree with them. I went on, With the four of you, Mama has lots of laundry to wash, hang out to dry, fold and put away it isn t easy. Playing in a lively way is all right but what you have been doing was making noise. Taking care of all of you is a lot of trouble and makes it difficult for me to go to work. Sometimes I think there are too many of you. How many children should we have in this family?

President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. She married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano, she is mother of one son and three daughters. Hearing that question they started to answer. One, one would be nice, one said. What? But with only one you wouldn t have anybody to play with. At least two would be good. Right! Two would be great. One to sleep on either side of Mama. Now they were starting to perk up a bit. With only two children, I wouldn t have to work so hard, and that would really help me, I said. Really, don t you think so? Right! Two would be good. Everyone seemed to agree on this. So, I put another question to them: If we had only two children in this family, who are the ones we wouldn t need? Hm-m-m... let s see.... They all began to think about this, and after a while they began to stare at each other. The eldest was the first to speak. I think that, after all, four is best. Because there isn t any one of us we don t want! I think so too! was the answer of each of the other three children. And Mama agrees, I added. We all looked at each other and smiled. Though we have enough of unpleasantness, hassle, and headaches, everyone at that moment was experiencing a heartfelt realization that there was not a single one of them that the rest could do without. I love you all! I said, joining in. With smiling faces like the sun coming out from behind the clouds, all four children pressed themselves against me. And even though all of them were hugging each other tightly, I saw that the smaller children were in front, with everyone placed carefully so that nobody would feel hurt, and that they were all touching each other. 6 My Encounter with Rissho Kosei-kai by Ms. Shatabdi Barua Rissho Kosei-kai of Bangladesh This testimony was delivered at the Youth Conference in Bangladesh on February 4. My name is Shatabdi Barua. I was born the oldest daughter of the Barua family, and I am now a junior at university. The first time I heard about Rissho Kosei-kai, it was from my cousin; he asked me to accompany him to the Japanese temple in Patiya. I participated in the Dharma circle there. I thought I would meet some Japanese monks (or at least some Japanese people) there, but when I went to the branch, it was completely different than I had expected. When I entered the branch, I saw people reading books together, following along with three people sitting on chairs. I learned later that they were reciting the sutra led by the leader and sub-leaders. After the recitation, they formed a circle and started talking. At first, I thought they were just chatting, but as I listened, I realized that they were discussing the Buddha s teaching. And I learned that the sutra recitation was accompanied by the beautiful and resounding sounds of the bell and wooden block. Then, at a study meeting, I learned about why Rissho Kosei-kai was established, and what its aims are; soon, I started attending the branch regularly. I made a lot of Dharma friends. And I found out that Rissho Kosei-kai is a Buddhist organization that explains to people in an easy manner about how to practice the Buddha s teaching, even while one is still learning it. I realized that if I learned and practiced the teaching of Rissho Kosei-kai, I would be certainly able to get good results from my practice. In my childhood, I used to participate in various kinds of Buddhist ceremonies, but I had rarely seen women talking about the teaching. So, I was very happy to listen to the testimonies of women after I started to visit the branch. While seeing them talking about their testimonies, I felt that I would also want to speak in front of people someday. When I entered Rissho Kosei-kai, I couldn t talk about myself when I participated in the Dharma circles. But now, I can easily talk about myself before anybody. Thanks to the Dharma

I sincerely hope that the teachings of the Founder will spread so that many people in Bangladesh will be able to achieve happiness. circles, now I can deliver my testimony to you! I feel so happy and excited. And I feel deep gratitude to the Founder Niwano, who established Rissho Kosei-kai. Since I was assigned a role in our youth group, I have been attending the branch every Friday. When I was not able to go, I felt irritated and uncomfortable as a result. Thinking back now, I am really happy that I have been able to spend so many days in such a positive and fulfilling way. The happiness of my family, however, suddenly turned into great adversity because of some terrible things that happened to us. Our lives underwent a drastic change. One day, my elder brother, who was a soldier, was imprisoned due to a coup d'état which had been carried out by the army. Learning of the news, my father (who was living outside the country at the moment) died from shock. My mother could not accept his death, even though she saw the body that had been carried from the country where he died. She became neurotic and finally had to be hospitalized. Because my father s death and my brother s imprisonment, my mother and I had no idea how to go on. So I cried every day. My mother and I had no income, so we had a hard time making ends meet. Life was so hellish that I cannot express in words how I felt. During such difficult times, we were supported by the Sangha members of Rissho Kosei-kai. They were concerned about our lives and kindly introduced me to a job as a tutor. Thanks to their kind help, we finally were able to live free of anxiety. I would like to study and practice the Buddha s teaching more, and continue learning, in order to become a respectable person. I sincerely hope that the teachings of the Founder will spread so that many people in Bangladesh will be able to achieve happiness. I also would like to diligently devote myself to disseminating the teachings to as many people as I can. Everyone here today... let s all strive to do our best together! Thank you very much for your attention. SHAN ZAI welcomes your religious experience. Why don't you share your religious experience through SHAN ZAI with people all over the world? 8 About the Eastern Japan Earthquake Dear RK overseas members The catastrophic earthquake that struck Japan on March 11 this year inflicted serious damage, mainly in the eastern part of the country. More than 15,000 lives were lost, and over 4,500 people are still missing. Each precious life was gone in an instant, and the area s social infrastructure was also heavily damaged. Responding quickly to this emergency, you, the overseas members of the Samgha, sent us not only financial contributions but also specific relief supplies. Among these contributions were a thousand warm jackets, produced in Bangladesh using part of the contributions from the overseas Dharma centers and branches. Distribution of the jackets was completed in August. Those jackets were intended for both volunteers involved in relief and recovery efforts, and for members affected by the disaster. Up the present time, a total of 4,000 volunteers were sent to these disaster-stricken areas, and I would like to report that those jackets were very deeply appreciated and used meaningfully by those who received them. I cannot express in words how much encouragement your support has given us in our activities toward future recovery. I truly feel the sense of One Global Samgha, linked by the teaching of the Buddha, regardless of national and cultural traditions. The dispatching of volunteers was completed by the end of August, and from September a program that focuses on providing mental care to emotionally wounded people will begin. I would like to ask for your continued prayer and cooperation, and as the person in charge of the dispatching of volunteers, I deeply appreciate all the support that has been extended so far. Thank you very much. Waichiro Izumida Director, Youth Department I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely express my gratitude to all the overseas members for your warmhearted support and generous contributions for the victims of the catastrophe, an event so rare and catastrophic, it is said to occur only once in thousand years. These particular contributions had a specific purpose the production of a thousand warm jackets, which were delivered to the disaster-stricken areas. The jackets were invaluable for both Rissho Koseikai volunteers involved in relief and recovery activities, and for the devastated members who were suffering from severe cold. I am sure the warm helping hand you provided supported many people in countless ways. Those areas are still on the way to recovery, and no one knows how the process will take; perhaps years or decades. Under the leadership of President Niwano, we would like to move, step by step, toward the future, with unity of purpose and mind. Kotaro Suzuki Director, Rissho Kosei-kai International for hope

Information The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano Sep Education for Becoming a Buddha We welcome comments on our e-newsletter Shan Zai. Please send them to our address at the bottom of the page. The purpose of education is not just to help us acquire knowledge, but also to allow us to develop into better people. The ultimate goal of education is the perfection of the human character. The perfection of the human character, however, cannot be accomplished by merely filling one s head with knowledge. It must be accompanied As I write this, there is before me a business card featuring a logo decorated with a star on the blue ground. It was given to me by Ms. Lido, who I met in Loppiano, where the center of Focolare is located. As she gave it to me, her eyes glowed brightly, just like the star printed on the card. And, the brilliance of her eyes increased when she started talking about her religious faith. I hear that as society becomes more modern and secular, people in the West have quickly turned away from religion. Many theologians and priests lamented the crisis facing the Christian Church at a symposium held in Santander, Spain. I wondered how Ms. Lido could establish her faith in such a dire situation. She is an intellectual who majored in philosophy at university. She had been skeptical about Catholicism, but when she met Chiara Lubich in person, the founder of the Focolare Movement, everything changed. Recently, she has begun to hear the voice of God through her daily prayer practice. When I asked, Where does the voice of God come from? she said, It comes from both within and without. As she said those words, I remembered a passage from chapter 16 of the Lotus Sutra, I am always here teaching the Dharma. We awakened to our faith through the encounter with the Founder, but it reminded me of the words All religions spring from the same source. Even though form of religion may differ, the source of all faiths is the same. by the cultivation of religious ideals, but I suppose there is little role for religion in the current world of education. In Buddhist terms, the perfection of the human character means to become a buddha. Human beings cannot live in total solitude. Their lives must be part of a society, which they create along with many others. In order to do this, people need to be taught manners. First of all, they need to know the difference between what belongs to them and what belongs to others. People also must learn that their lives are their own responsibility. If they fail in something, they should strive to overcome it by themselves. And since no one can live alone, they need to consider others benefit first before thinking about themselves. I think teaching these sort of principles is the role of religious education. There are highly educated, brilliant people who are disliked by others, and whom no one talks to, because they are overly aggressive and inconsiderate. In fact, the higher education they acquired is good for nothing, as far as personal development is concerned. In that sense, the necessity of religious education is becoming more and more essential.
