We have finally come to the last part of the series 12 Essentials for Good Living. So far, we have learned the basic Buddhist teachings in eleven installments, including the Three Seals of the Dharma, the Four Noble Truths, the Six Perfections, and the Twelve Causes and Conditions. Is there a particular phrase, or idea, that sticks in your mind? Personally, I had an experience that helped me to deeply understand the teaching that All things are impermanent. After a long absence, I had a chance to talk with my cousin, who I used to play with when we were children. While talking with him, I felt that we couldn t communicate as naturally and pleasantly as we had before. One reason for this is that we had only seen each other once or twice a year. And I found that our personalities and values had changed because of the challenges we had faced in our individual lives. He had matured, as had I; but I didn t that, or perhaps I didn t want to face what that implied. This incident made me feel a little bit lonely. In fact, the reason I had such a negative reaction was because I did not understand impermanence. I often hear about people who do not get along well because of lack of communication. Even parents and children sometimes could break off their relationships. It is said that it is more difficult to maintain good relationships between people who are close to each other. If we really want to lead pleasant and happy lives together, we cannot be careless about this. I would like to learn to appreciate the value of my relationship with those who are around me at any given moment. I would also like to be able to be considerate and mindful of how they may have changed. I believe that the teaching All things are impermanent was showing me how to do this. 2 Guidance by President Niwano Savoring Every Encounter President of Rissho Kosei-kai Nichiko Niwano The Japanese use a word meaning thanks to or thanks for on a frequent basis (as in thanks to your assistance or thanks for your kindness ) and when we can do so from the heart, we feel the happiest. When I think about this, I realize that the times we feel intense joy and cannot help but say thanks to you are when we feel completely fulfilled those are the times when we are genuinely happy and are liberated. As Shakyamuni explained through the teaching of dependent origination that all things arise through causes and conditions none of us lives by our own power alone, we are caused to live thanks to what we receive from everything else. As is written in a sutra, Two reed stalks stand by supporting each other. If one is taken away, the other collapses. There is nothing in this world that exists solely of its own accord (cause); everything comes into being through connections (condition) to other things that is the truth. Thinking deeply about the law of dependent origination and treating every encounter as important, we can spend our days joyfully enriched. Fully appreciating our indebtedness for the support to our very lives, all of us must feel grateful. Those who are capable of accepting with gratitude whatever connections and encounters they may experience just as they are are people who have opened their eyes to an essential truth about life and then know happiness. We may wonder, though, what it means in concrete terms to savor every connection and encounter when so many of them occur in the course of a day. I think that, first of all, it means taking a second look at the connections we have with our families, which we may habitually take for granted. News reports tell us of tragic cases of parental child abuse and other terrible incidents. When we try to imagine what it must be like to experience such a situation, we can see just how fortunate we are to have the connections that cause us to live. Our lives may seem ordinary, but we know that passing our days peacefully, thanks to the workings of myriad connections, is something for which we should be immensely grateful. When we have gratitude for these connections and savor every encounter, we can serve as a good condition to foster positive encounters for those around us.

3 Furthermore, when something painful or difficult for us does occur, we can recognize even an unwelcome encounter as also something we should savor, and turn it into a positive one. In a short poem Zen master Ikkyu ( ) wrote, Something may seem bad, but do not reject it. Think of the bitter persimmon that becomes sweet when dried. When I was a child, I once bit into a bitter persimmon without knowing its taste, and quickly threw it away. What Ikkyu is doing here is comparing a bitter persimmon with a painful or difficult experience, an unfortunate encounter, which through wisdom can be turned into a good encounter. Encounters are an active element of life and bring about change. For this to be successful depends on how we accept our encounters, not simply on the type of event that is occurring, as this poem tells us. There is no such thing as an unnecessary encounter. If we think deeply about this, we find that they all provide spiritual nourishment. When we do not avert our attention from some difficult or painful occurrence but experience it fully, we clearly see that suffering is the seed of joy and can at last clearly know what true happiness is. Just as our predecessors were skilled at making sweet dried persimmons from unripe bitter ones, only when we first know suffering do we seek the way to be free from suffering. In other words, we start leading our lives following the wishes of the gods and the buddhas. Suffering is therefore a good encounter, leading people to the way of awakening. It is important for human beings to encounter the sacred. As members of Rissho Kosei-kai, we are very fortunate in that, thanks to the founder and cofounder, we have already encountered the teachings of the Buddha and know the joy of living with our minds at peace. In November we mark the anniversary of the birth of the founder, so in recognition of that, while treating as important each connection and every encounter, let us vow to serve as good connections with people who are suffering or who feel isolated, for that is one of the most important forms of practice by which we can repay our debt of gratitude to the founder. 4 In the Footsteps of the Founder K a i s o - s a m a n i N a r a i t e President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Kosho Niwano Kaisosama ni Naraite The Lotus Sutra is all about encounters, and it tells us to treasure every one. The concept of causes and conditions is also all about encounters. The Buddha s wish for us is that we can make our encounters and meetings with other people into wonderful events. (Tada Hitasurani [Only Singlemindedly], p. 84) Founder Nikkyo Niwano told us, Encounters are everything. They all stem from dependent origination. He also said, What we call en, or encounters, is truthfully of extreme importance. During a business trip in Japan when the founder was on one of the nation s highspeed Shinkansen trains, he went to the restroom and did not return to his seat for rather a long time. His male secretary became worried, and when the founder did return he asked if he was all right. The founder replied, It was kind of untidy in there so I was just cleaning it up a bit. This was not a case of his moralistically cleaning the dirty restroom. We only learned about it because the secretary happened to be there. Never once did the founder say anything like, Yes, I cleaned the restroom on a Shinkansen train I hope that members also will clean those at their Dharma Centers, at the very least when they are performing their assigned duties at the centers. Even though I may wish for everyone s happiness and make it my job to pray for your happiness, I cannot give you happiness.... The happiness you might be feeling today is not something I have given you it is the joy and well-being that you have achieved through your own effort and continuing religious training, and results from the principle of causation contained in the Buddha Dharma. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], vol. 3, p. 356) What about you and me, what would we do in a similar situation? We would probably consider a dirty restroom a bad encounter, close the door right after opening it and

5 look for a clean one. If the next one were occupied, we might even go to the next car to find a clean one. To the founder, however, such an encounter was merely another opportunity to do a good deed so that the next person can use it without disgust. Because it was dirty, another good deed could be performed. When you encounter an unpleasant situation, you can transform it into a positive one. This is what it means to treasure every encounter and, by means of whatever situation is presenting itself, to cultivate the fields in our hearts and minds. Doing this naturally leads to bodhisattva practice that benefits others. When you revere the person next to you and mutually connect up through causes and conditions that are positive ones..., and when you make it your job to do whatever you can for society, based on this way of thinking the next person and the next one after that will come to find this style of association pleasant and their spirits will become extremely mellow. Even though we hope to be happy, we cannot achieve this by ourselves; we need to encounter and relate to other people. Even if you just sit quietly by yourself, you will not be able to cultivate your spirit, nor will you feel joy. When you encounter and relate to another person, your spirit is moved and the raw material and an opportunity for cultivating your spirit come into being. In fact, you cultivate your spirit by dealing with the issues before you, through both joyful and sorrowful events. For example, when you have to get along with someone who is hard to deal with and you feel you would somehow like to make them happy, that in itself can be an opportunity for you to cultivate your spirit. The founder said, In the society in which we are now living, there cannot be people who are born either good or bad. If your encounters with them are positive ones, they will become good, and if your encounters with them are negative, they will become bad. That is the viewpoint of Buddhism. One day, the founder was making the rounds of Dharma Centers and was on his way to a certain one in Tokyo away from the center of the sprawling capital. Though it was his usual practice to arrive for appointments five minutes early, on this particular day he got caught in a traffic jam and ended up arriving thirty minutes late. The faithful, who at first had been joyfully expecting his arrival, had become worn down a bit with waiting and worrying about what might have happened. The founder s driver was in an even worse state, full of embarrassment and remorse. When the founder arrived, however, he greeted everyone with a big smile and said, Well, I am very grateful for all that has happened today! Now I understand what you have to go through when you come from some distance to worship at the Great Sacred Hall! Hearing this, everyone immediately felt relaxed and happy. They were now rescued. The delay had not been anyone s fault; nobody was going to be criticized, everything had turned out well.

I can expound the Dharma as much as I like, but if nobody is listening, if I have no faithful around me, it will all be for nothing. An encounter with the Dharma causes wonderful spiritual growth in our faithful. They achieve liberation. The fact that our

After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano. Mother of one son and three daughters. faithful have become liberated supports me and enables me to serve as the president. [The founder then held the position of president of Rissho Kosei-kai.] This was not because of any virtue in me. This was simply because the Buddha vouchsafed us great virtue in the form of faithful believers. (Tada Hitasurani [Only Singlemindedly], p. 27) We experience a variety of events every day and encounter various people. Our spirits are moved by these encounters. When our spirits are thus moved, if we, like the founder, express our feelings to others in a warm and friendly way, we are cultivating our spirits. We are not the only ones who can attain buddhahood everyone around us also can do so and achieve happiness. You are the one who has to do the cultivating, however. It is your spirit, your heart and mind. When you cultivate these things, your internal state will naturally be expressed as warm words and kind deeds. When you look at others with such a warm, friendly gaze, and accept people as they are, that is cultivating the fields in your heart and mind. Isn t that the proper way to honor the legacy of the founder? Encounters are a wonderful thing. To treasure the people we encounter, no matter where or when, isn t that the way of life taught by the principle of causation?... I never know how many more years I have left to live, so I think I should live every day doing the best work I can, treasuring all my meetings and encounters with other people. 8 piritual SJourney Spreading the greatness of the Dharma to many people Gangaa Enkhbold, Rissho Kosei-kai of Ulaanbaatar, in Mongolia When I was 37 years old, I met the Chapter head, Ms. Shuger Zorigmaa, at an assembly. This encounter led me to Rissho Kosei-kai. As a psychologist, serving as president of the Mongolian-American Society, I am naturally very interested in the human mind. After that first meeting, I encountered Ms. Zorigmaa several times. While hearing her speak, I was very much impressed to know what Rissho Kosei-kai teaches: a way of living, putting other people first, and the idea that every human being has the inherent buddha-nature. So I started to visit the Dharma Center to take part in sutra recitation and to study Buddhism. As I studied the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai, I was filled with the desire to transmit them to others. I have spoken to around sixty people about Rissho Kosei-kai, and ten of them became members. Transmitting the teachings to others helped me deepen my own faith, and also enabled me to express my thanks to everything and everyone that supports my life. One of those whom I guided to Rissho Kosei-kai is like this. He has been a friend since our school days. He always behaved in a very arrogant way, and wouldn t listen to others at all. So he always had trouble with other people. I had been worried about him, and I wished he could find comfort and support in the teachings. I visited him because I wanted to know which of his feelings caused him to act in this manner. Listening to him tell his story, I learned that he had suffered trauma resulting from his parents divorce, which happened when he was a child. Understanding his mental feelings, I talked about the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai. He gradually realized his good points and the buddha-nature within himself. He finally said, Even though my parents divorced, I am grateful to them for giving me life. Afterwards, his personality amazingly turned calm and centered. Now I feel deeply happy to be able to practice with him. Nowadays, economic development has been remarkable in Mongolia. On the other hand, such mental issues as people s distrust of others and family discord have come to the surface. Mongolia is one of the world s Buddhist countries, so I believe there are many who wish to learn Buddhism. I would like to devote myself to spreading the teachings and helping people to improve their lives. 9 The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano The Inner Voice of the Buddha-nature There are people who think they must make their point, even though they may hurt others in doing so. Some people think that, in order to defend themselves, they must be free to bear arms. Others insist that they must make a profit, regardless of what means are used in the process. Most of these people believe such freedoms should be guaranteed to all human beings. As a matter of fact, they think little of putting such ideas into practice. I am sure that, of course, you don t believe such freedoms should always be granted. But when we are asked where does freedom end? we are reminded of how difficult it is to decide for certain what is right and what is wrong in every situation. The culmination of the Arms Down! Campaign for Shared Security was held on October 4 in New York with an impressive concluding ceremony. Since the inception of the tenmonth-long campaign, more than 20 million signatures were collected from all over the world. Ms. Stellamaris Mulaeh, the chairperson of IYC, said that the success of the campaign was a miracle, but she still feels the burden of the heavy responsibility assigned to her. The number of signatures is a genuine miracle, and all the people involved, including young people at the overseas Dharma Centers, really did their best. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of them. In my opinion, the buddha-nature s inner voice, heard in the depth of our hearts and minds, is the best guide to deciding as a human being which actions are right, and which are wrong. To put it in Western terms, our own innate sense of reason is our best guide. Today, we live in a very liberal and permissive society, and it is impossible to maintain any kind of social order without listening to the inner voice of our own buddhanature. The main purpose of our practice of guiding people to the Way is exactly this; to urge people to listen to the voice of their own buddha-nature. I am sure that the Founder must be happy with this remarkable accomplishment. I seem to hear his voice saying, You all did a great job! Nothing would be accomplished if one single person didn t make the determination to begin. Rev. Kosho Niwano concluded her speech at the concluding ceremony, If you really wish to make a difference in the world, it is important for each of us to be aware of the power selfless service has. This is particularly an important truth in performing peace activities. Now is the time when we should go into action as bodhisattvas who have been awakened to the buddha-nature.
