1 Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 2011 Volume 71 8 Rissho Kosei-kai Chapter 4 of the Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma Faith and Understanding Shariputra was given assurance that he would become a buddha, and Shakyamuni clearly explained the reason for Shariputra s assurance using the Parable of the Burning House. The four great shravakas in the assembly Subhuti, Maha-Katyayana, Maha-Kashyapa, and Maha-Maudgalyayana were greatly inspired by the preaching and came to understand the preciousness of the Dharma. With great deference, they paid homage to the World-honored One and said, Although the Worldhonored One has been teaching us from the distant past, we misunderstood and were satisfied with our own limited awareness. We even didn t think that we are children of the Buddha and would be able to attain buddhahood, so we haven t sought the bodhisattva way. We are so delighted at Shariputra s assurance. We would like to explain by a parable how we understood the preaching of the World-honored One. We would like to ask your attention. Then they started sharing the Parable of the Rich Man and His Poor Son, saying: There once was a poor son who left home when he was young. He roamed around for many years, living a life of great hardship. One day, he reached the palace of a rich man. This rich man was his father, but the young man didn t realize it. The poor son started to work, remov- Dharma Training for Leaders 2011 Held Dharma Training for Leaders was held from July 11 to 23 at headquarters. Thirty-three members of the 3rd and 4th class gathered at the headquarters, representing thirteen branches from eight countries. They earnestly participated in various kinds of lectures despite a heat wave of over 30 degrees centigrade. On the final day of training, President-designate Kosho Niwano gave them a lecture on the theme In the Footsteps of the Founder. They learned the Founder s view of things, and were happy to be reminded of the good fortune of encountering such precious teachings. For the 2010 class members, this year marked the second year of training, and they were greatly delighted to The World of the Lotus Sutra ing dung at the palace, and he worked diligently for about 20 years, which earned him people s trust. He was entrusted with management of the rich man s property. The rich man, knowing his life would soon end, summoned his relatives, the king, ministers and so on to declare that the poor young man is actually his son, and that he would transfer all his properties to him. The son rejoiced to hear his father s words. He never expected anything, but now he had earned wonderful treasures. In this story, the rich man is the Buddha and the poor son is like an ordinary person who doesn t realize that he is a child of the Buddha. The four great Shravakas finished the parable and said to the World-honored One, We sought lesser teachings, so we lacked the aspiration to seek the bodhisattva way. Because the Buddha knew this, he has guided us to the teachings of the Great Vehicle through various means. They cordially expressed their gratitude, thinking that they could hardly repay the Buddha for what they had received. be together again. And the 2011 class members, who may have been nervous at first, were reluctant to part from each other by the end of the session. They truly felt like members of one family during the training. Participants returned home with a vow to practice the dissemination of the teachings in their own countries. Congratulations to the class of 2010 on their graduation. As for the class of 2011, we will see all of its members again next year. We greatly appreciate their leaving us with such lasting impressions and great memories.

2 Guidance by President Niwano Refining Our Hearts and Minds by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai Most of us lead our lives with the hope of becoming people whose minds and hearts have been refined, and with a character that is purified the kind of people who are able to make others happy. For us who are Buddhists, it is important to learn the Buddha s teachings to study and practice the Dharma but are you aware that, even if we do not seek some special opportunity to engage in learning, we are in fact already doing so to a certain extent from one day to the next? Morning and evening reading of the Kyoten is an important regular practice for us. On some occasions, we may not give it our full attention, or we may be distracted, but when we are able to read the Kyoten from a desire to deeply understand the heart and mind of the Buddha, then such reading naturally becomes the process for nurturing our hearts and minds. In other words, at those times a positive influence is at work. In Japanese, the word for learn shares the same root as the words for emulate or follow. Therefore, learning the Buddha s teachings is to emulate Shakyamuni, and to follow the words and actions demonstrated by Shakyamuni. The Buddhist sutras explain the teachings realized by Shakyamuni as well as the working of his heart and mind, and so, in the midst of our recitation, we are drawing deep inspiration from the heart and mind reflected in the sutra and emulating Shakyamuni. Eizon ( ), a Shingon Ritsu monk during the Kamakura era, said, We study in order to rectify our hearts and minds, and indeed, the distortions, confusion, and mistakes that assail us are removed through studying and our hearts and minds are returned to their original normal state. This refining should continue even after the distortions, confusion, and mistakes are removed. Kukai ( ), also known as Kobo Daishi, left us these wise words: Recite well and speak well; even a parrot can do that well, which means that, no matter how much of the Buddhist sutras we read, unless we refine our hearts and minds through this and link it with our daily practice, our effort is wasted.

3 What is meant by refining the heart and mind? Zen master Dogen ( ) told us that learning the Buddha Way is learning about the self, and so that is what refining the heart and mind really is. What, then, is the self about which we are learning? Simply put, the source of all life is one, and so all living beings are in and of themselves manifestations of the buddha-nature. That is our essential nature, in other words, our true self. Being aware of this is a key part of learning about the self in other words, that studying and emulating contribute to refining the heart and mind. As the Buddha s heart and mind are always filled with compassion, it follows that we, too, through these actions become not self-centered but full of consideration for others. In some instances, though, we have a nearly uncontrollable desire to get something we want, become angry when matters do not go as we wish, and grumble, complain, and think about things from a self-centered viewpoint. Then friction arises with other people, and we bring suffering and worry upon ourselves. Therefore, we should learn from the Buddha every day, embrace his heart and mind, return to our innate self, and be inspired to make diligent progress. Because we take refuge in the Lotus Sutra, we learn to live as humane individuals through recitation of the sutra. As the chords in the hearts and minds of different people are struck by different things, not only the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism, the Christian Bible, and the literature new and old of East and West, but even the manga that move so many people these days can become our subject, as long as this helps us to refine our own hearts and minds. From the Buddhist sutras as well as general publications, I often copy out the sections that make a profound impression on me. This has been my habit since my younger days. One of the five practices of the teachers of the Dharma, as taught in the Lotus Sutra, is copying the sutra, and in my own way I have adopted the practice. For some people, reading the Kyoten and refining the heart and mind may seem like difficult things to do, but what is essential is that we become caring and warm-hearted people who show consideration for others. To have no reservations about extending a helping hand in response to the suffering of another person that is what is meant by refining our heart and mind, and putting this into practice is something we must keep continuing to learn. 4 Smiles Are Like Flowers from Heaven by Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai When our infant son started to crawl, his three older sisters aged 9, 7, and 4, would often play with him by each calling out, Come over here, come to me! Our eldest was a dependable child and was usually the first to grab anything unclean or unsuitable that the baby wanted to put in his mouth or keep him from hitting his head against a piece of furniture. The middle girl was gentle, and followed at the baby s pace, petting him, raising his interest, amusing him, and making him laugh while smiling and enjoying herself as well. Our youngest daughter, however, was still a beginner elder sister, and was always taking things away from the baby, saying, This is too dangerous for you, or You can t do that yet let me do it for you. Though she doubtless was trying to do her part in taking care of him, the result was that her little brother always wanted to play with the two older girls, and would not go to the youngest by his own choice. She apparently was somewhat hurt by this, and would say, I want to play with him, but he never comes to me. Is it because he doesn t like me or something? I had a strategy for this, which I tried when the other girls were not around. I don t think so, I would answer her. When I was alone with your brother the other day, he indicated to me that he liked you best of all when I showed him a family picture. What? Really? our youngest girl asked, breaking into a smile. But thinking again as she recalled the baby s behavior, she asked doubtfully, Are you sure? Just then, our second daughter happened to come in the room and said, It s true. I get the same feeling. He likes you best because you always want to play with him. Aren t you glad to hear that? You should play with him again soon. This caught me completely by surprise. I couldn t believe this was a 7-yearold speaking. It was obvious that she was the one who always pleased the baby and she must have realized that he always went to her first and was quite fond of her. It would have been perfectly natural for her to state, Everybody knows the baby likes me best. Instead, she instantly grasped her younger sister s feel-

She married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano, she is mother of one son and three daughters. ings and her mother s intention, and, putting herself last, spoke those kind words. Born in between her elder sister, who usually seemed to know what to do, and her younger sister, who knew how to get her way, she was not the kind of child who pushed herself forward, but whenever one noticed her she was always there with a smile. I suppose that because she was the middle daughter I did not worry much about her, noticing simply that she often forgot to take some necessary item to school, or that her desk at home was a mess. Unlike our eldest daughter, however, who did not like anybody touching her neatly organized desk, our second daughter always allowed her little sister or the baby to play with things on her already disorganized desk. Her words to her younger sister were not something I had told her to say, and indeed were beyond anything I could have suggested. Encouraged by her sister, the youngest said, So it s true. Then I guess I ll go play with him now, and off she went. Glancing at our second daughter, I saw she was looking at me and smiling. You are a very sweet girl, I said to her, giving her a hug. 6 My Spiritual Home by Ms. Debbie Vomero Rissho Kosei-kai of Tampa Bay I grew up in a middle-class Catholic family in the US. Our religious demands were fairly simple: go to church on Sunday morning, with the family, and occasionally, visit elderly relatives after church for an hour or so. Otherwise, my life was not much different than my other friends. In my teenage years, Catholicism really began to rub me the wrong way. I did not like the fact that we practiced our faith for one hour on Sunday, and maybe a quick one-hour visit afterwards, yet the rest of the week, our family would not discuss religious teachings, much at all. Once my parents allowed me to drive myself to church on Saturday night, instead of going inside for the service, I would sit outside and listen to the radio, waiting for the congregation to exit. Then, I would drive home and falsely proclaim to my parents that I had been to church for the week. Once I left home, for a life on my own, I left the Catholic faith for good. Wandering aimlessly for several decades, I proclaimed that I did not need an organized religion to be a moral person. However, in my twenties, I became too rigid about my own view of the world and developed a very narrow and critical view of others perspective on life. I divided people into good and bad, and cut myself off from a lot of relationships. At 31 years of age, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), after several periods of debilitating attacks. Although, medicine stabilized my symptoms, I searched for a way to rid myself of the disease, altogether. This search lasted until I was in my 40 s. A holistic physician that I saw, during an initial consultation, listened to my medical concerns and introduced me to the idea that our misguided thinking, and resulting actions, can cause disease in our bodies. He taught me the mindbody-spirit connection and surmised that my MS might be caused by my hard-heartedness about others. That realization hit me hard! I knew as soon as he said it, that he was right! So, I began, in earnest, to change the critical way that I looked at the world. I finally began to listen to a gnawing ache that had been growing inside of me, begging for a spiritual connection. After searching for some time, I discovered Buddhism. I joined a Zen Sangha and sat, shoulder to shoulder, with other Zen practitioners, in Sunday morning Zazen, as we all strived towards our own personal enlightenment. But somehow, this did not fill the void that I was feeling, so I left that sangha after a year and a half. Then, for a few years, I practiced Buddhism, on my own. I also began to realize that I needed

7 to give back to the community, so I trained as a literacy volunteer and continue that work, even today. Additionally, I also became a vegetarian, in support of animal rights. At this point, I felt that I needed to rejoin a new sangha, for support and guidance. Not long after, at a Tampa Bay Vegetarian meeting, I met a member of Rissho Kosei-kai of Tampa Bay. She was so enthusiastic about this newly formed sangha that I agreed to try it! On that first visit, I felt such warmth from the minister and participants. I found connection with the teachings of the One-Vehicle, and became a member that very first day. I had found my spiritual home! From the start, I learned to love Hoza, where we attentively listen to each other and offer guidance. I m learning to express my own shortcomings. With the help and guidance of Rev. Nick Ozuna and the other participants, I am learning to see myself as the valuable person that I am, despite approval or rejection from those around me. I am coming to appreciate that I, too, have the gift of Buddha-nature, and am trying to help that Buddha-nature bloom within me. I have immersed myself in Lotus Sutra study, leadership roles, daily recitation, and attempting to live my Buddhist practice every hour of every day! I feel such gratitude towards the Founder, Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, and the Co-founder, Myoko, for dedicating their lives to bring the Lotus Sutra teachings to people all over the world. It took time before I was willing to tell my Christian friends that I was taking a different spiritual path, but after a few months in Rissho Kosei-kai, I gained the confidence to proudly announce that I was a Buddhist. This was a great feeling! One of the most moving experiences that I have had occurred during Hoza, which was held on March 27 in 2011, when Ozuna Wedding guests from Japan joined our Sunday service. That day, just a few weeks after the dreadful Japanese earthquake and tsunami, we all laughed and cried together. Despite our words needing to be translated through interpreter, this showed me that we were all one in our humanness. Since that time, I have enjoyed other moving experiences: the Interfaith Service for Japanese Relief, a sangha Labyrinth walking meditation, joyful sangha potluck dinners, and attending the recent gathering to welcome Rev. Kosho Niwano at the Dharma Center in Oklahoma during her visit in the US. I have made wonderful friends, both in Rissho Kosei-kai and in neighboring religious congregations, through our sangha activities. I have also had a reduction in MS symptoms, which I attribute to a more open and giving heart. As a leader, I see my role as a way to help our minister extend the reach of Rissho Kosei-kai to people in the US. This year, I plan to deepen my knowledge of the Lotus Sutra, and of Founder Nikkyo Niwano s life-long mission. It is my sincere hope to continue to deepen my practice, for my benefit, as well as my community, and the world.

8 The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano Information Aug Nothing Is Useless in Life For the prayer for the victims and survivors of the Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, see next page. Not a thing we experience in life is useless. Shakyamuni taught us that life is suffering ; that is, suffering is a characteristic of each of our lives. But when we encounter misfortunes or troubles, we often complain, asking, What have I done to deserve this suffering? However, unless we go through these negative experiences, we will not be able to attain true joy in life. We could say that overcoming suffering is the way to find happiness and peace. Those who overcame suffering stemming from failure in business or physical disease are able to share with others how they can conquer their own problems, and the joy they will attain after doing so. When one are suffering, if he or she can learn to accept his or her condition with the knowledge that by overcoming this suffering, the Buddha will give me the power to help those who are suffering in a similar way, then power will well up from within, and a way to solve the problem will become clear. It is said that it is important to know the usefulness of the useless. Various kinds of sufferings we encounter in life, and seemingly useless detours we make, will all be utilized in the future. From Kaisozuikan 5 (Kosei Publishing Co.), pp A renowned Indian scholar on Japanology, Dr. Saroj Kumar Chaudhri, arrived in Japan on June 27. The day has finally arrived that the Lotus Sutra, which was translated long ago into Chinese by Kumarajiva, will be translated into Bengali. Dr. Chaudhri is a big Japanophile (one who has a deep interest in Japan), and he has previously lived for more than a decade in Japan. Dr. Chaudhri is not only celebrated as a scholar on Japan, but he is also well versed in Buddhism. Although he is now over 80 years old, he decided to come all the way to Japan in order to devote himself to the work of translating the Lotus Sutra. I was amazed at his great enthusiasm for the task. In the past, China encouraged the translation of Buddhist scriptures. At the time, more than several hundred thousand monks were engaged in translation work, which produced a great number of prominent translator monks. There were also Chinese dynasties that devoted a huge amount of the national budget to translation work. But, no matter how much money was appropriated for the project, I wonder if the task would have ever been completed if these translator monks hadn t enthusiastically devoted their lives to this work. We are fortunate to have Dr. Chaudhri, who is blessed with both great learning and virtue, and also with great enthusiasm. I sincerely pray that the translation of the Lotus Sutra into Bengali will be completed as early as possible.
