Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 9 Volume 60 Rissho Kosei-kai 2010 This month, we have wonderful news!! It is on page 9, so please look for it. We have introduced each of the Six Perfections so far in the series, and this time I d like to discuss wisdom, the last concept contained in the teaching of the Six Perfections. Wisdom, in this case, means the ability to see things as they really are. Actually, it is quite difficult to see things in their true aspect because of various ideas that arise in our minds, such as our fixed thoughts, feelings of like or dislike, concepts of convenience versus inconvenience, and so on. These all act as a kind of filter that prevents us from clearly observing things in what is called their true aspect, or, in Buddhist terms, the ultimate reality of all things. I was born to an American father and a Japanese mother. When I was a kid, my friends were all Japanese, so I felt awkward and uncomfortable since I alone was of mixed heritage, and different from the others. But one day, a Rissho Kosei-kai member s words completely changed my life. She said to me, When you accept everything as it is with an honest and straightforward attitude, you will, without fail, be happy! It s OK to be yourself, just as you are! When she told me this, I felt a deep sense of relief and liberation, and her words took away the burden I had placed on myself long ago. When I thought of myself as a precious one born into this world owing to both a Japanese and American existence, I was finally able to feel, I do not have to deny myself any longer. I should just keep on being the person I am now. So how can we maintain the ability to always see the true aspect of all things? I think the answer is to faithfully practice the rest of the Six Perfections that we have already learned: generosity, keeping the precepts, forbearance, diligence and meditation. To be honest, it is pretty difficult to always see things as they are. However, if we could see and accept everything from the Buddha s viewpoint, we would surely attain happiness. So, why don t we all put the Six Perfections into practice together so that we can lead more beautiful, fruitful lives? Mongolian prince of translators, Mr. Deleg Tumurbaatar visited the headquarters of Rissho Kosei-kai in Tokyo on August 10th. Mr. Tumurbaatar is renowned for his translations from Japanese into his mother tongue. In Tokyo, he met with Rev. Yasutaka Watanabe, chair of the board of Rissho Kosei-kai, and took a tour around the headquarters complex. Mr. Tumurbaatar has translated many books, including novels of such major Japanese authors as Yasunari Kawabata, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and Ryotaro Shiba, as well as the book Bushido: The Soul of Japan written by Inazo Nitobe. In addition, he has devoted himself to the Mongolian understanding of the Japanese mind and manners through spreading the Japanese traditional games igo (Go game) and shogi (Japanese chess). He has also played various roles in the media, including acting as commentator for the Mongolian TV broadcast of live sumo tournaments from Japan. His remarkable works help build bridges in cultural understanding between the Japanese and people in his home country. Mr. Tumurbaatar held a lecture for officials of the Chuo Academic Research Institute (which is affiliated with Rissho Kosei-kai), the staff members of Rissho Kosei-kai International, and those involved with the translation and publishing business. He addressed them saying, My wish is to provide Mongolian people with many opportunities to understand their own country better through getting to know Japanese traditions. There are so many more things that I would like to do. Next, I will start to spread soroban, the Japanese abacus.

Guidance by President Niwano Getting Rid of Likes and Dislikes President of Rissho Kosei-kai Nichiko Niwano Most people know someone they would like to avoid seeing face to face or with whom they cannot get along. Even thinking of that person is depressing, so when they actually do have to meet, they always irritate each other. As long as we have likes and dislikes for other people, there is no end to our suffering, and our minds are never clear. Shakyamuni described this situation as the suffering inherent in coming into contact with what we hate. In other words, everyone knows someone for whom they bear a grudge or cannot stand being around, and encountering that person is unpleasant and leads to suffering. If this is the case, it would be best to overcome our dislike of disagreeable people, but because the ego is strong, we cannot easily free ourselves from such emotions as likes and dislikes. Well, then, in human relations, is there no way to be free of likes and dislikes? Of course there is. Buddhism teaches that no one escapes the four sufferings of birth, old age, illness, and death. In other words, they are our destiny. On the one hand, the sufferings we experience in dealing with disagreeable people or unpleasant situations are part of life. But we can overcome those sufferings by changing our point of view and way of thinking. Achieving this depends on practice of the Buddha s teachings. Our like or dislike of someone is based on our personality, and as such is a rather delicate and complicated matter. Even so, since such emotions are expressions of the ego, friction and discord are likely, and we might suppose it impossible rid ourselves of suffering and anxiety. If we had no likes or dislikes, life would be simple.

As I have mentioned in one of my previous essays, since we have the same characteristics that we dislike in others, we may be sensitive to those characteristics. Once we are convinced that we dislike someone or something, we become attached to that feeling, and it diminishes our capacity to accept other people. Yet, the human heart is not that small, narrow, or hard. Not only human relations, but everything else in this world, without exception, is impermanent and subject to change. Furthermore, life, through every encounter every karmic connection is continually undergoing creative change. Therefore, by changing our point of view and meeting other people, we may open our hearts even to difficult people. Besides, since every karmic encounter happens for the sake of us, changing our perspective allows us to benefit from everything around us. After considering all this, if we still find it difficult to get along with someone we dislike or find disagreeable, we should ask ourselves, What would Shakyamuni do? One thing would be to savor the meaning of Shakyamuni s saying, Among people filled with hatred, we live without hatred for others, and we live joyfully. The Dhammapada says, How difficult it is to be born human. When we closely examine this teaching about the essence of life, or when we read the verses The sky is empty enough to let birds fly at will; the sea is broad enough to let fish leap, which praise the vastness of the skies and oceans, they suggest how to take a broad view of human life. Buddhism teaches us not to try to change others but to accept them by changing ourselves, and to put that into practice. In this sense, someone we dislike becomes the very benefactor who teaches us the strength of our own ego, and serves as the whetstone upon which we polish our minds. When this realization sinks in, our likes and dislikes vanish, and we can live joyful lives. From Kosei, September, Translated by Kosei Publishing Company.

In the Footsteps of the Founder K a i s o - s a m a n i N a r a i t e President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Kosho Niwano Kaisosama ni Naraite When your way of thinking is firmly in conformity with the heart of the Buddha, that moment of pure, heartfelt wishing for the happiness of others that you experience communicates itself to anyone you are with, and this is repeated in turn to another and yet still another person. Thus the circle of happiness grows, and of course you will also harvest the fruit of approaching buddhahood. (San Reizan Meiso [Meditations of Three Holy Mountains], p. 86) Founder Nikkyo Niwano taught us that if you want to be happy, you first must change yourself. His words refer not only to changing something in our behavior or other more obvious characteristics, first and foremost they refer to drawing ourselves nearer to the outlook of the Buddha who sees the joy in the here and now as things are. We are sustained to live in a world of dependent origination, which is a world of transience in which everything must and does change. Because we have been given life in a world of dependent origination, when we affirm the now and perceive its merit, anything that happened in the past is seen to have had a good cause, and accordingly, whatever is to come in the future will bring good results. Various events are constantly occurring all around us. In our interpersonal relations as well, a variety of people are involved, including those with whom we get along and those with whom we do not get along. Even if you try, it is not possible to have your own way in all your relationships with people and events. You must first correctly adjust your own mind, and when you achieve that, the ideas and actions of the people you are involved with fall into place in accordance with that single thought of yours. (San Reizan Meiso [Meditations of Three Holy Mountains], p. 80) When you regard others, and as well as yourself, rather than trying to immediately bring about change, you should try to see all as the buddha-nature itself and try to realize that dealing with suffering is part of the active effort people make. When you see what is wrong and try to correct it or change it, even though you may be doing your best with a warm and

affectionate spirit, things will often not progress as you wish and both you and the other person may end up having a difficult and unpleasant time. The husband of a certain Rissho Kosei-kai Dharma Center leader was set against her activities and constantly told her, Your so-called faith is nothing but complacent selfsatisfaction. She sought guidance from the founder, and he gave her the following answer: Well, your husband was actually extolling you with praise! A faith that satisfies you is the greatest happiness you can achieve, isn t it? You should understand what he says as praise and be grateful to him. Religion is in fact what allows your spirit to receive true joy, what opens your mind, sets it free from all fetters, and gives rise to feelings of gratitude for the unlimited gifts bestowed by the great natural world. This is truly the benefit of religion, and as extra bonuses, the satisfactions of your life become abundant and things start to go well for you. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], special volume, p. 121) It is not surprising that the center leader felt sad and distressed when her husband said that her faith was just selfish, self-satisfied complacency. Somewhere in the back of her mind, however, she had been thinking, Thanks to my faith, our home is a happy place, and that if anyone needed to change, it was her husband not herself. By assuming that she was the one that deserved appreciation, she could not determine how she should change, and found herself at a loss. At this point, the founder brought her up by telling her that her husband was singing her praises and she should be grateful to him. The foundation of faith is a joyful heart. Because the founder knew this better than anyone, he was regularly able to take joy in everything. When one s spirit feels joy, that sense of happiness is communicated in a widening circle around one. When we are laboring as bodhisattvas for the sake of others, how much joy does that give us? Are we really aware of our faith s true value and how fortunate we are to have it? What the founder was teaching us was that when the center leader s husband called her faith activities self-satisfying, rather than take his words as criticism, she should understand them as welcome evidence of the faith that was giving her joy, and with her joyful heart draw closer to her husband. The ability to do this, he was saying, is part of the true value of religious faith. The Buddha always defends us with his great compassion and mercy. He also gives trials that are sometimes difficult to overcome to people who are capable of advanced religious training, instead of leaving them only in easy and favorable situations. Overcoming such difficulties leads us to truly recognize the Buddha s immense paternal benevolence and realize that we indeed are children of the Buddha. This allows us to attain a genuinely joyful state of mind. (Hosshin [Raising Aspirations], monthly magazine, February 1992) This world we are living in is an impermanent one of ceaseless change. The way to influence change in this ever-changing world is a matter of using our own hearts and nothing else.

President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano. Mother of one son and three daughters. An impermanent world can be one of hope, in which we can continue to learn and progress throughout our lives. If we can change our own hearts and minds so that we can perceive our buddha-nature and adopt a joyful outlook, even relationships that have so far seemed confrontational can become cordial on both sides, and a world radiant with the light of the buddha-nature opens up before us. The founder was well acquainted with true joy, and his insights have so far brought liberation to countless people. He has shown us how the world can become better through the insights of just one person who realizes true joy. It might not be easy for us to acquire such insights as the founder showed. Even so, however, we can hear the voice of another person s buddha-nature loud and clear if we can pick up clues and understand from their words and actions what is bothering them. If we can do that and speak to the other person with warmth and empathy, it will constitute a fullfledged expression of our own present joy and a crystallization of compassion and wisdom. When we relate to people with the sincere wish that they will somehow realize how happy they are, they can develop of their own accord the ability to improve themselves. In a single thought in your own mind, three thousand realms come into view. That is three thousand realms in a single thought. If you think in the right way and you come under the divine protection of the gods and the buddhas, you become able to enjoy life together with all the members of your family. My household is an extremely lively one. When I leave the house in the morning and when I come home in the evening, my four grandchildren, starting with the seven-year-old, gather around me. When I exclaim, Here come those youngsters again! or words like that, there s a great to-do. When the grandchildren are around me, I never stop laughing. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], vol. 4, p. 89) Kaiso-sama ni Naraite (Note: All quotations in this essay are from writings of the founder of Rissho Kosei-kai, Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, which appeared originally in Japanese.)

Protected by the Buddha Part 2 Tomoaki Kinoshita Chapter Leader of the Men s Group of the Kobe Dharma Center 1 I felt a lump in my throat when I heard wife s words and my Tomoko, Masao, Tetsuya and Yuki after I die. I ll live the rest of my life to the fullest so that I can make this happy lifetime solid and substantial. I will not put my own judgement first, but simply live in accordance 234 with the Buddha s will. Of course, I have qualms and fears about the coming treatment, but I will survive for my family. Thank you all; I hope you get along with me from now on, too. I decided to create some goals in order to maintain this positive frame of my mind, and one of them was sharing my spiritual experience at the 60th anniversary ceremony of the Kobe Dharma Center. Keeping this resolution, I entered a treatment process using an anticancer agent. There are only two treatment methods which are applicable to pancreatic cancer. One is intravenous drip, and the other is oral medication. My treatment began by accommodating IV therapy once a week, for a total of three times for the first three weeks a month, and then in the final week of the month, I took a blood test to check the leukocyte condition and the state of cancer with the tumor marker, which presents the index numbers for cancer s growth or involution. In fact, according to the tumor maker, the score of the result of healthy person is 0 to piritual SJourney * This testimony was delivered at the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Kobe Dharma Center on April 11, This is the second of three installments. 37, but in my case, the score was about 18,000 before I took the treatment. Fortunately, I had only a few of the side-effects that we were concerned about before the treatment. I stayed the hospital for two weeks, and after I left the hospital, I switched to outpatient treatment. During that period, I spent time at home doing housekeeping to help my wife, copying the sutra, and so on. My treatment went successfully and my cancer marker score decreased to 2,000 from 18,000 in June. I didn t think my cancer will be totally gone, but I hoped to mantian this condition as long as possible. However, the pain on my back got gradually worse. I went to see a doctor of plastic surgery and the doctor said that there is possibility of extensive cancer on my lower back bones. I thought to myself, It has been going smoothly up to now, but the time has finally come. I wonder if one of my resolutions, delivering my testimonial, might go up in smoke. Whenever I went to the Dharma Center, people kindly encouraged me and said, We are looking forward to hearing your spiritual experience. We wish you good luck! But the more I received such encouragement, the more I felt empty and hard to accept the facts of my situation. Meanwhile, something happened on July depressed mood lifted a little bit. I began to feel better, and to regain a positive will to live. I wrote in my diary at the time as follows: Reflecting my past, I used to think of death in my youth, but I am so lucky to have encountered the teaching, a great teacher (mentor), wonderful friends in the sangha, and I was also lucky to have a job with a good boss, senior colleagues and comrades at my workplace. Above all, I was really fortunate to meet and marry my wonderful wife and also to be blessed with son and daughter who are my pride and joy. There is only one thing I regret in my life; that I was lax in mataining good health, because of which I have to leave my dearest 27th, the same day that, just six months earlier, I had been diagnosed with cancer. On that day, the Nishi Chapter which I belonged to was in charge of volunteer service at the Dharma Center. In advance I had been assigned the role of chanting leader and I recited the sutra with members of the chapter. Chanting the sutra while looking up at the Buddha calmed me down and helped me to feel that I was guarded by the Buddha. Then, in late August, I received an assignment as lecturer on the topic of Life and Religion at a training seminar for the men s group of our Dharma Center. The contents of my lecture, if summarized, are as follows: Religion has three roles in a life; first, it provides solution to the concerns, suffering or anxiety which occur in people s daily lives; second, it leads people to become ideal human beings through seeking essential way of faith for the improvement of humankind (in other words, it guides people to live as they originally should have been living to begin with, with self-perfection as the goal); and third, religion contributes to our community, society, nation and the world. (To be continued) Shanzai welcomes your religious experience.why don't you share your religious experience through Shanzai with members all over the world?please send the script or inquiry to the address; shanzai.rk-international@kosei-kai.or.jp. Thank you.

The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano The Mind of Revering Someone as Devadatta There is no one who loves others more than oneself. So, we are naturally tempted to bear grudges and seek revenge against others when we are criticized or when something bad happens to us. But the Buddha teaches that we shouldn t bear hard feelings towards anyone no matter what the circumstance. Rather, his guidance tells that we have to be grateful and pay homage to people who assign us blame, or take their troubles out on us, because they help us to improve, and to learn to cultivate our hearts and minds. You may say, No way! I can t possibly behave like that! However, the Buddha himself demonstrated that this can be done. As you may know, there is a story of the Once I heard these words directly from Founder Niwano: All things in the universe have hearts and minds. Due to my innate curiosity, I have since often spoken to plants and animals at many different places. Of course, I cannot have a direct conversation with them. But it is fun to communicate with the flowers, trees and animals around me. I d like to tell you about something that happened in Suganuma, a village where the Founder was born, on the morning of the final day of this year s Dharma Training for Leaders. After sutra recitation, I noticed a little spider that had appeared Buddha paying homage to Devadatta as a good friend, which is told in chapter 12 of the Lotus Sutra, Devadatta. Devadatta sometimes devised plots to murder of the Buddha, even though he was one of the Buddha s disciples. However, the Buddha referred to Devadatta as his benefactor who had taught and transformed him in a previous existence, and also as his good friend (best friend) who had helped him attain the supreme enlightenment. I m utterly certain that this truly was the Buddha s way of dealing with this difficult situation. Such an attitude is precisely what we need to build a foundation to realize buddhahood; it is also the way to create peace. From Kaisozuikan 4 (Kosei Publishing Co.) p Translated by Rissho Kosei-kai International from under the altar. Fearing that someone may step on it, I spoke from my heart to the spider: I ll take you to a safe place, so please come here. Then the tiny life came straight at me, and crawling up on my big toe, the spider climbed up onto me, stopping on my chest. I stood up slowly to keep the spider from falling off. Then I went out and gently placed it down on the grass. All things in the universe have hearts and minds?the Founder spoke to me these words immediately after an auspicious phenomenon took place at the Oike lake in Suganuma during his visit there. (Kotaro Suzuki) Rissho Kosei-kai is a lay Buddhist organization whose holy scripture is the Threefold Lotus Sutra. It was established by Founder Nikkyo Niwano and Co-founder Myoko Naganuma in This organization is composed of ordinary men and women who have faith in the Buddha and strive to enrich Rissho Kosei-kai their spirituality by applying his teachings to their daily lives.
