1 Rissho Kosei-kai Vol. 80 Buddha s Wisdom Changes Your Life The World of the Lotus Sutra The Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma chapter 10, Teachers of the Dharma, Shakyamuni I N elaborated on the attitude of those who would expound the teaching of the Dharma Flower Sutra in the future period of the Decay of the Dharma, and the merits that those who expounded the teaching correctly would accrue. Soon after the Buddha finished teaching, suddenly, a stupa of the seven precious materials, extremely high and wide and deep, sprang up from the earth in front of him, and stood in the air. Then from the treasure stupa came a loud voice of praise, saying: Excellent! Excellent! World-honored Shakyamuni! You are able to teach the Dharma Flower Sutra of great impartial wisdom, the Dharma by which bodhisattvas are taught and which buddhas protect and keep in mind. All that you say is true. The voice was that of a tathagata named Abundant Treasures. When he was a bodhisattva, he made a great vow: After he became a buddha and then extinct, if there would be a place where the Dharma Flower Sutra was taught, his stupa would appear there, bearing testimony to the sutra and praising it. All the people who heard this voice were filled with joy in the Dharma, and wondered who was in the stupa. Great Delight in Preaching Bodhisattva, perceiving their minds, asked the Buddha about who was inside. The Buddha answered, In this stupa there is the whole body of a tathagata. Great Delight in Preaching Bodhisattva said that he would like to see the tathagata, but the World-honored One told him to wait for a while. The World-honored One said, The Tathagata Abundant Treasures has taken a profound vow, saying, When all the Buddha s embodiments in various kinds of worlds return together and assemble in one place, and everyone realizes that the Truth is invariable, and that those who teach the Dharma correctly in all the worlds are all these embodiments, I will appear for the first time to bear testimony to the truth of the Dharma. Great Delight in Preaching Bodhisattva replied that he would like to pay homage to the buddhas who embody the World-honored One. Then the Buddha emitted a beam of light from his tuft of white hair, immediately making Chapter 11 The Sight of the Treasure Stupa visible all the buddhas who were preaching the truth in the ten directions. Each of the buddhas said, I would like to go to Shakyamuni Buddha s world, and participate in the assembly to bear testimony to his teachings. Then this world instantly became pure and beautiful. The buddhas in the ten directions assembled in this world, and waited for the treasure stupa to be opened. Then, the World-honored One opened the door of the stupa and the Tathagata Abundant Treasures was sitting inside. The Tathagata Abundant Treasures offered half his seat and said to the World-honored One, Take this seat. Then the World-honored One took half the seat next to the Tathagata Abundant Treasures. Then, seeing this situation, those in the great assembly thought to themselves that the tathagatas would use their divine powers to enable all of them to be up in the air. Perceiving their thoughts, Shakyamuni Buddha immediately used his divine powers to bring all of the great assembly to where he was, high in the air. And he said, Who is able to teach the Dharma Flower Sutra everywhere throughout this world? Before long, I will enter nirvana, I would like to entrust this Dharma Flower Sutra to someone. He encouraged those gathered to spread the Dharma. At the same time, Shakyamuni Buddha preached the difficulties in teaching the Dharma Flower Sutra in the period of the Decay of the Dharma through the doctrine of six difficulties and nine easy practices. The great assembly ascended into the sky was held. SHAN ZAI

2 Guidance by President Niwano Our Smiles Can Open Minds by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai The Benefits of Laughter When talking to other people, no matter how passionately we speak, we cannot reach them if their minds are tightly closed. Someone once said that such a mind is like a bowl turned upside down. Nothing can get into an upside-down bowl. So first the other person s mind, which is like that bowl, must be turned right side up. To make any heart-to-heart communication possible, both persons must open up about their innermost feelings. At such times, laughter and humor often can play a large role. This is why, from long ago, many noted priests as well as men of letters have taught us something important by including satirical or humorous anecdotes into their lectures and stories that might otherwise be stiff and formal, making their listeners or readers chuckle and thus turning the bowl of the mind right side up. Jippensha Ikku ( ), the popular Edo period writer of the work known in English as Shank s Mare, left us this comic verse as his dying words: Without further ado, I take leave of this world, so with the departure of the incense smoke, farewell! And the Zen master Ikkyu Sojun ( ) composed the following verse that humorously expresses the truth of birth, old age, illness, and death: So we are born and so we die. This is the same for Shakyamuni and Daruma,* and for the cat and the ladle, too. Laughter and humor open the hearts of hardened people, bring harmony to human relationships, help us accept and overcome difficult realities, and make our thinking more gentle and flexible. In fact, Dr. Viktor Frankl ( ), who survived being sent to a concentration camp by the Nazis, suggested to his fellow inmates that they tell each other one funny story every day to make each other laugh. It may have been this laughter that gave them the strength to go on living. When people are faced with troubles or hardships, humor and laughter are like a window letting in a beam of light. Humor loosens our heartstrings, encourages us to relax, and gives rise to liberation.

3 Smiles Show Consideration Some people, however, are not adept at taking the initiative in telling jokes or making others laugh. As a matter of fact, I am one such person. I used to leave home every day with a frown on my face, so one day my wife gave me this advice: Before you leave, look in the mirror and try to smile. Thanks to developing this good habit, I feel much less self-conscious about smiling in public and I now have more rewarding relationships with other people. Mention of smiling reminds me that I was impressed by a scene from last year s FIFA Women s World Cup Final in Frankfurt. When at last the final play was at hand, all the members of the Japanese team, their faces beaming, formed themselves into a circle. Their smiles broke their tension, relaxed their muscles, and let them exercise their full potential. We should all follow the example of Nadeshiko, as Japan s women s soccer team is known, developing flexible strength, and go through life with smiles on our faces. Even if at first we do not feel like smiling, by making a conscious effort to do so we will soon find that smiles come naturally to us. And then, because the body and mind are closely interrelated, our mood will brighten and our outlook become more positive. A smile carries with it the message I d like to be your friend, and helps build harmonious, warmhearted relationships. Furthermore, smiling is itself being considerate: the donation of smiling peacefully is one form of practicing compassion and a form of donation that everyone can do, even without substantial financial resources. In this season, the mountains are aglow with the arrival of spring. And we, too, should glow with bright smiles, our minds relaxed and flexible. We should never forget to smile since smiling is a source of kindness and consideration, and we should continue, cheerfully and joyfully, to be diligent in our practice. * Bodhidharma (known as Daruma in Japanese) is credited as the transmitter of Ch an from India to China. 4 Smiles Are Like Flowers from Heaven by Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai After Arriving Downstairs One day around the time when our third daughter had just started attending nursery school, I was giving her a terrific scolding for some trivial reason that now I could not remember even if I tried. You must never, ever do that again. Do you understand? I said. Yes, mother, she replied. After giving her this additional call for obedience as she descended the stairs before me, crying, the sight of her small form gave me a pang, and my heart grew heavy. Why did I have to say such harsh things to her? I intended to be scolding her for what she had done, but in the middle of doing so I realized that I was giving vent to my own internal irritation. By that time, however, it was too late to take back my words. That worried me, and I proceeded downstairs. It seemed that she had gone into my mother s room. Normally she did not enter her grandmother s room for fear of bothering her, but it seemed that my scolding had caused her to seek emergency refuge there. Some time later, my mother came out of her room and, seeing me, said, Oh, there you are. Did something nice happen to that girl today? What? I asked. Humming a tune as she did so, she knocked on my door and asked, Grandma, do you have something nice for snack time today? and floated in, like walking on a cloud. She had definitely been crying while she was going down the stairs, and I had been sure she had gone to her grandmother for solace. But in fact she was happily enjoying a snack. Had her mood turned around completely by the time she reached the bottom of the stairs? Half dumbfounded by the speed of her mood change, half wondering whether she had really gotten the point of the scolding, while at the same time worried that I might have upset her by being more severe than was necessary, I was in any event relieved to hear this. I thought it encouraging that a spirit of resilience must have been nurtured in our daughter if she could so easily bounce back after a scolding. On reflection it occurred to me that, in their daily lives our children come into contact with many adults, not just me and their father, but also their grandmother, aunt and uncle. Naturally enough, they were not always going to give first priority to everything that I, as their mother, said to them. Our household does not have an agreed-upon policy on how to bring up children. Even if I wished that our children would pay more attention to their

After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano, she is mother of one son and three daughters. parents concerns, the situation they found themselves in every day was one of growing up in the midst of a number of adults, each with sometimes different opinions and values. Up until that day, I had considered this situation to be somewhat troublesome, something I just had to put up with. At that moment, however, I stopped to reflect. When the children grew up and went out into society, they would not be finding many values held in common. In the future they would be coming into contact with people holding various values. Sometimes they would go along with the other person and sometimes would feel the need to confront them; sometimes they would feel isolated and sometimes they would meet with understanding, choosing for themselves what they found to be good as they progressed with their lives. In society where many people have different values and different ways of thinking, it is the family that nurtures the individual s ability to avoid losing his or her way and not fear failure while also adapting to circumstances, and so to be raised among people who do not always think exactly alike is, in fact, a good thing. From that point of view, our family now appeared ideal to me. Coming out of my thoughts I saw my daughter looking up at me from downstairs. Mother, I m sorry about what I did before, she said. No, no, it was my fault for being so crotchety. Let s be friends again! OK! Did grandmother give you a delicious snack? 6 Spiritual Journey Aiming to Be Bodhisattva Loveliness by Mr. Fernand Enhikke Brazil Dharma Center This speech was delivered on September 10, 2011, at the Brazil Dharma Center during the Ceremony for the Cofounder s Annual Memorial Day. G OOD morning, everyone. I m Fernand Enhikke. It has been one and a half years since I began to participate in the activities of the Brazil Dharma Center. When I was cycling around my neighborhood, I saw a signboard advertising a seminar on Buddhism at the center and I decided to join in. Since then, I have been studying the teachings, and they have brought me happiness. At the end of April in 2011, I fell off a platform at a subway station, Shakara Clavine, near the Dharma center. My life was miraculously saved by the Buddha s blessing, but I suffered some external injuries. The injuries to my pelvis and right hand were especially serious. I spent three days in an intensive care unit. My doctor told me, You need to undergo an operation on your right hand. I was surprised to hear that my treatment was going to take such a long time. When I heard this, first of all, I was worried that I might not be able to fulfill my assigned responsibility to beat the drum during the ceremony celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Brazil Dharma Center. And I realized that I could not do anything, including working, cycling, eating food with chopsticks, driving, and studying Japanese. After all, I could not move for a long time because of the medical treatment I needed. While I was recovering, I recalled what I had learned at the Dharma center; to find out what I should learn through each experience, including this one. Although I had learned many things, this particular teaching stood out in my memory. When I was able to walk a little, I participated in the intermediate-level seminar on Buddhism. During the seminar, the minister said, We don t come here to pray for miracles. We don t wish for an quick and easy solution of a problem through offering sutra recitation. Let s just appreciate the here-and-now and offer sutra recitation. I was very impressed with this message. I underwent an operation on my right hand in August The day before the operation, I felt sincere appreciation for my life at that time. I didn t pray for anything. I went back home feeling happy. And on the day of the operation, I went to Santa Cruz Hospital feeling refreshed. I took along the Founder s book, Buddhism for Today in Portuguese. A reception clerk said to me, Your room number is 407. I had a mysterious sense about that number, and I was mind-

7 The day before the operation, I felt sincere appreciation for my life at that time. I didn t pray for anything. I went back home feeling happy. ful of it. I opened the book to page 407. I found the passages written below: Then all those bodhisattvas, gods, men, asuras, and others, seeing him without arms, were sorrowful and distressed and lamented, saying: This Bodhisattva Loveliness is indeed our teacher and instructor, but now his arms are burned off and his body is deformed. Thereupon the Bodhisattva Loveliness in the great assembly made this vow, saying: Having given up both my arms, I shall yet assuredly obtain a buddha s golden body. If this assurance be true and not false, let both my arms be restored as they were before. As soon as he had made this vow, his arms were of themselves restored, all brought to pass through the excellence of this bodhisattva s felicitous virtue and wisdom. At that moment, the three-thousand-greatthousandfold world was shaken in the six ways, the sky rained various flowers, and gods and men all attained that which they had never before experienced. The restoration of the arms of the Bodhisattva Loveliness symbolizes the ideal state of mind which those who practice the bodhisattva practice must maintain. The act of burning off both one s arms must be felt by others to be unbearably painful. Such an action, however, is not felt to be painful by a person who has attained the mental state of a great bodhisattva. However much he may sacrifice him- self for the sake of the Law he does not feel suffering. The sutra describes this mental state as follows: The bodhisattva ever delights / And is at ease in preaching the Law. As often mentioned in this book, this is our ideal state of mind. After I read these words quietly, I said to my mother in a loud voice, Have no fear! The operation will be successful! This turned out to be true, and now I am in the last stage of treatment. Through this experience, I learned that it is important to live in the time I have been given with a bright, eager attitude. I aspire to make spiritual progress like the Bodhisattva Loveliness. I would like to practice the teaching using this recovered right hand, lead people to happiness with the Dharma, and transfer merit to the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni. 8 THE TEACHING OF FOUNDER NIKKYO NIWANO F Attitude to Know Your Unknown Self OR human beings like ourselves, religious practice will continue until we die, so it is important that we are ready to constantly learn more and more. But in order to learn, we must have a flexible mind. It is also important to stay humble and receptive. Our capacity is often compared to a glass. If a glass, which represents ourselves, is filled with water, there will be no space for any more water. In spite of our limited knowledge, if we believe we have already learned all there is to know about something, clinging to our own narrow views, we are like a glass filled with water. There is no room for anything else; our hearts will not be open to others, and their wisdom. Such an attitude will only make people more obstinate, and no further progress will be made. In this sense, humility is crucially important and incredibly valuable. First of all, it is very important for us to recognize that we know nothing completely, and that we don t fully understand anything at all; there are always more details, perspectives, and viewpoints to learn about. To recognize that we don t know this is the most essential and basic attitude of those who would learn. Be Awakened to the Dharma Column through the Practice of Smiling IF we can comprehend the Dharma, everyone will be able to live happily. This is the promise the Buddha made to us. So how can we comprehend the Dharma? The answer is actually very simple: To walk the Buddha Way. The practice of smiling is also part of the Buddha Way. The practice of smiling can warm the hearts of people around us, and bring peace and positive energy to ourselves. But, in addition to this, we can master the Dharma through the practice of smiling. When we keep smiling, our family life eventually becomes peaceful. And our hearts become warm. This is because of the workings of the principle of transience. If we have attachments, we cannot smile. The Truth is also working here. So let s dare to smile, and set the world of harmony into action. Let s be a person who can perceive the workings of the Truth, and can put the Truth into action through the practice of smiling. R E V. 9 I RK International Buddhist Congregation Flower Festival Held N T E R N A T I O N A L Buddhist Congregation (IBC) held its Flower Festival, which celebrates the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha, in Tokyo under blue skies on April 15, A total of 386 people, including 169 people from twenty-three countries, participated in the Flower Festival. IBC invited guests from the embassies of India and of Sri Lanka, and other organizations. In the ceremony, children in traditional Japanese costumes walked in procession, and representatives of foreign countries made offerings to the Buddha. This was followed the Taking of Refuge in the Three Treasures, with representatives from seven countries chanting in their respective languages. In her Dharma talk, Dr. Miriam Levering explained the purpose of the Buddha s birth in this world. In the garden outside the ceremony site, a presentation of Japanese culture was set up, where visitors could enjoy performances including tea ceremony and calligraphy. This international flower festival started eleven years ago with only five attendees from other countries; now, it has become a great success with nearly 400 participants. We hope the festival will continue to be an opportunity for as many people as possible to come in contact with the Buddha s teachings, regardless of nationality.
