Special Issue 2 April 2011 Issue The regular articles of Shan Zai appears on pp Articles Related to the East Japan Earthquake The Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake that occurred on March 11 caused the greatest damage Japan has experienced since World War II. Dharma centers and branches of Rissho Kosei-kai in the stricken areas were heavily damaged. But through these local Dharma centers and branches, Rissho Kosei-kai members immediately began support efforts. The first floor of Ishinomaki Dharma Center was flooded by the tsunami. Yabuki Hoza, a satellite of Shirakawa Dharma Center, collapsed, and other Hoza branches also had to be temporarily closed. The areas of the Haramachi Dharma Center and Hoza branches were designated as evacuation zones, due to the possible after-effect of the radioactive contamination from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant. This is why they were closed. The local members were moved to evacuation sites with local residents. A large number of members, mainly in the Oou, Tohoku, Fukushima, and Ibaraki blocks, suffered a great deal of damage from the quake. Some members evacuated to Dharma centers in the Kanto area and to the Second Pilgrimage Hall at RKK headquarters in Tokyo. The Ome Training Center in Tokyo is now preparing to accept a number of Rissho Kosei-kai members as well as nonmember evacuees. Immediately following the disaster, ministers and leaders of many Dharma centers headed to stricken areas with staff members from headquarters. They have been busy confirming the safety of all the local members, but there are still members who status isn t known. At the same time, it is becoming clear that a large number of members and their families have been lost. Since March 26, President Niwano has been visiting those stricken areas in mainly the Tohoku region to express his condolences in the midst of the crisis. Chairman of the Board Reverend Watanabe, also visited affected areas, mainly around Ibaraki Prefecture, from March 25. The East Japan Earthquake Task Force, which had been organized at RKK headquarters, dispatched support teams (called Zen-yu tai) and relief supplies to the stricken areas. Members from the Niigata block, located close to stricken areas, have been working together to collect supplies and deliver them to those areas. Furthermore, in order to ensure supplies get to the hardest-hit areas, the West Japan Task Force headed by President-designate Rev. Kosho Niwano, was organized at the Osaka Dharma Center. Rev. Niwano has been vigorously spearheading a team for the collection of materials and the delivery of them at the center. There has also been active involvement by Rissho Kosei-kai members collecting for their fellow members in stricken areas. In addition, there have been street donation efforts for the East Japan Earthquake Emergency-relief Project, hosted by the Japanese Committee of WCRP. In response to the catastrophe, the Donate-a-Meal Foundation Committee decided to contribute 500 million yen for the reconstruction of the damaged areas, as well as for the restoration of the normal lives of the victims. The committee will decide on where and when to make donations on the basis of the individual circumstances of those areas. Area near Sendai afflicted by tsunamis Supplies arrived from all over the nation Support teams from the headquarters work with volunteers this issue, we will officially use the phrase Tohoku Pacific Coast Earthquake to refer to the quake that took place on March 11; we will use the phrase Eastern Notice In Japan Earthquake when we are referring to the quake including the disasters subsequent to the March 11 quake.

Special Issue RKK Overseas Members Work to Help Those Afflicted by the Earthquake In response to the massive earthquake, Rissho Kosei-kai s overseas Dharma Centers have begun their efforts to help the victims of the catastrophe. Members of the Bangladesh Dharma Center launched a fund-raising campaign on March 17. Mr. Palash Barua is chair of the the Dharma center s board of trustees; he also manages a company that manufactures clothing and accessories. Mr. Barua has generously offered his support, providing 600 articles of winter clothes for the victims. Both Taipei and Tainan Dharma centers have begun to collect donations for those who were affected by this tragedy. The Bangkok Dharma Center has initiated a campaign to collect funds on the street. In North America, Dharma Centers have started to ask for donations on the Internet, and are working to collect contributions at their local centers. The Brazil Dharma Center is also active in collecting relief donations. In Mongolia and Sakhalin, people conducted a memorial service for the repose of the souls of those who died in the catastrophe, praying for the reconstruction of afflicted areas, and working to collect much-needed donations. Likewise, prayers are being offered in various parts of the world, and the movement to provide relief is growing around the world. Members of Bangkok Dharma Center in donation activity About 600 winter clothes donated from Bangladesh Members of Taipei Dharma Center prayed for the victims Message from Rev. Suzuki Director of Rissho Kosei-kai International Many letters of sympathy and encouragement, from Sanghas around the world, are arriving at headquarters almost daily. Members of overseas Dharma centers have been actively engaged in relief activities by collecting donations for disaster victims. About 600 articles of winter clothes reached the headquarters from Bangladesh by air cargo on March 30. I can imagine how encouraged Rissho Kosei-kai members affected by the disaster will be by the warm words and prompt action of their fellow members overseas. As the director of Rissho Kosei-kai International, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to you all for your support. As reported in Shan Zai, support teams were dispatched from Rissho Kosei-kai headquarters to the stricken areas the day after the earthquake. They worked hard to determine the safety of members, and made great efforts toward relief activities. Due to the accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, following to the disaster of the earthquake and tsunamis, their fear has been growing deeper and deeper. We at the headquarters will continue to do our best to carry out our support activities for those in the affected areas. I sincerely hope overseas members will offer their prayer for the greatest possible relief of the fear and anxiety experienced by those affected by this tragedy.

Special Issue The Record of the Members of the Third Support Team On March 25th, we left headquarters for the areas afflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The third Support Team consists of Rev. Matsui and Rev. Tashiro of the Youth Dept., Mr. Katsuyama of Kosei Cultural Institute, and me (Takeno of RKK International). As we drove to our destination, we talked about the massive earthquake. One member said that even though he understood that the coverage of the tragedy he saw on TV was factual, he could not accept the reality of it. We exchanged our honest feelings about recent events, as we mentally prepared for the harsh reality we were about to face. The highway to our destination had been restored somewhat. However, when we approached to Fukushima Prefecture, we saw slanted utility poles, collapsed houses, and cracks in the ground. We gained a sense of the magnitude of the earthquake. Any gas station along the highway s rest areas had long lines of cars waiting to fill up. At 6:00 p.m., we arrived in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. One hour later, an aftershock hit, with a seismic intensity of 5. Here, the quakes are still occurring daily with violent shaking, reminding me of the fear I felt in Tokyo on the day of the initial quake. I was heart-wrenched when I thought of those who had no choice but to live as disaster victims in refuge areas. The situation in Sendai City was calmer than I had expected. I found some men wearing suits, and some women wearing high heels. The sight of it, so soon after a catastrophe, gave me a strange feeling. However, the next day we were dispatched to Iwanuma City, south of Sendai, to remove debris. There, I witnessed these kind of disasterstricken scene I had been anticipating. When I saw cars swept away by the tsunami and pine trees uprooted (things I had previously only seen on TV), I was at a loss for words. There were many other shocking sights in other areas, too numerous to mention fishing boats stranded three kilometers away from the sea, and tens of trees, which used to function as windbreaks, lying in the rice fields.

Special Issue The Record of the Members of the Third Support Team I worked with other volunteers who rushed from the Dharma centers at Tsuruoka, Yamagata, Shibara, and Yonezawa, located relatively close to the stricken areas. We removed rubble and cleaned up inside the damaged houses. When tsunamis swept in, they left everything behind, including not only seawater but also sand, mud, sludge, and pieces of wood. Some houses were filled with half-meterhigh heaps of mud on the first floor. It was muddy inside, so it was hard to walk without wearing gumboots. Tatami mats, saturated with water, were too heavy for one person to lift. We were only able to clean one house per day. In the midst of all this, President Niwano visited our location on March 27. He shook hands with each of the evacuees and encouraged all of us, saying, Let us bloom a great lotus flower from the bitter experience of this disaster. Everyone was very moved and encouraged by his words. Although facing great hardship, Rissho Kosei-kai members in the affected areas are looking ahead and working towards a better future. Every time we met one of these members, we were inspired. Tomorrow, on March 28, we will be headed up north for Ishinomaki from our current location in Sendai. To be continued

Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 2011 Volume 67 4 Rissho Kosei-kai Notice This is a special edition of Shan Zai. This April issue will focus on news reports and other coverage of the Eastern Japan Earthquake that broke out on March 11. We will webcast the ceremony of the Anniversary of Shakyamuni s Birth through the Internet on April 8, Please refer to the end of this issue for details. Guidance by President Niwano Learning to Live Humbly by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai Let Us Look at Ourselves How beautiful are the cherry blossoms blown by a gentle spring breeze. At this season, we sometimes feel that we are encountering new things. When we make new acquaintances, we often unconsciously tend to take on an air of superiority in what we say and do, seeming to give instructions instead of learning from what is genuine and fresh about a new encounter. The ancient expression nothing is as close as ignorance means that instead of supposing that we know everything, we would come closer to the truth if we admitted how little we actually know. As Mencius, the fourth century BCE Chinese philosopher put it, Shame is an essential quality for human beings. Those who operate by cunning have no use for shame. In other words, human beings need to know what it is to feel ashamed of themselves. If we can feel ashamed at not having a sense of shame, we can lead our lives without fear of being disgraced. Essentially speaking, we should never fail to demonstrate a sense of humility. In terms of the Buddhist principle of dependent origination, no matter in what circumstances we may encounter others we are newly connected with them at that very moment, so even if there is some difference in our social status we are all equally newcomers. Considering human relations in this way, it seems silly for someone to act in a patronizing manner because he or she has seniority or is in a higher position. That said, we human beings are often truly awkward, and it is difficult for us to act with humility. The following well-known passage from the verses on repentance from chapter 40 of the Avatamsaka Sutra has the great power to move us to be humble: All of the mistakes we have made from long ago are due to ignorance, anger, and greed that have no beginning. Therefore we should now together reflect and make amends for them all. This means that our many past wrongdoings are the result of very deeply rooted greed, anger, and ignorance.

The words that fall from our lips and the actions taken by our bodies have accumulated in our minds and hearts, and we should reflect upon and make amends for them all. Before we know it, they sneak up on us, but when such a passage reminds us that we should deeply reflect on ourselves, we can return to being humble, and kind and considerate toward others. Life on Earth began some four billion years ago. Microorganisms like bacteria gradually evolved into present-day animal and plant life, and during that long repetitive process, in which thousands of species either became extinct or came into being, we human beings appeared in the world. The reason I am mentioning this rather unexpected topic is that, when we look back upon the long, long history of life leading to our existence today, we cannot help but be humbled by this fact. We should live to the fullest, during the time we have been given, the life we have been granted. The Japanese life scientist Keiko Yanagisawa put it this way: It is a miracle that such complicated life forms evolved from mere single-celled organisms.... While there is the flow of life, there is also the flow of death. Everything that happens in these flows is the accumulation of chance occurrences. And when I think about that, every little thing appears sparkling and wonderful. When we realize the preciousness of being caused to live here and now in the eternal ebb and flow of life, all existence seems to sparkle in our eyes, and we are overwhelmed by a desire to live humbly in harmony with our surroundings. Just as Ippen ( ), founder of the Ji sect of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, noted, When I rely on my own abilities, my mind gives rise to selfish attachment, conceit, and arrogance, when people think they are living by their own power alone, they become obsessed with themselves, and lose themselves in pride and vanity. And then, they gradually forget to be grateful. If we feel that arrogance is creeping into our hearts, we should remember the verses on repentance. We should also think about the long history of life on our planet. When we do so, our attachments to craftiness and self-centeredness instantly vanish, and we experience a refreshing and comfortable state of mind, as if a fragrant breeze were blowing across us. That feeling of being renewed is a first step toward our self-improvement. From Kosei, April Translated by Kosei Publishing Company.

Smiles Are Like Flowers from Heaven by Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai When our eldest son reached his fourth year, he seemed to be getting naughtier and more mischievous, and every day the family would be scandalized, amused, impressed, or dumbfounded by his antics. He has three older sisters, and I also come from a family of four sisters, so for my parents he was the first boy to come along and they found him a never-ending source of interest. We had always celebrated the annual Hina Doll Festival for girls in March by displaying in our home a set of dolls attired in elegant costumes of traditional Japanese imperial court members. After our son s birth, however, we also started flying outdoors traditional streamers in the form of carp that represent the wish for a strong healthy son and his success in life. These are displayed in the days leading up to the Children s Day holiday in May. On the day we were preparing to put up our first family set of carp streamers, my father seemed interested and delighted to help us. This was last year, just before the boy started attending kindergarten. One day after we finished our evening sutra recitation service and were closing up our household Buddhist altar, my son started telling me something in a very earnest way. Because he was getting things a bit mixed up, my father quite casually said, That sounds a little strange to me. As soon as my son heard this, he lost his temper and cried out, It is not strange! If you say that, Grandpa, you re a silly old man! Of course, my father was right, but although my son is small, he still has his pride, and it seemed that being corrected in front of everyone had bruised it. At first everyone laughed at how suddenly he had lost his temper, but he did not calm down and continued repeating, Silly old man! Unable to bear this any longer, first my mother said, My, my, my! How long is this angry little boy going to keep it up? My husband followed and said, You should apologize to grandpa. Then I spoke to him, saying,

President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. She married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano and mother of one son and three daughters. Can t you say that you re sorry? but he did not calm down at all. In fact, he threw himself on the floor in a fit of anger. Finally, our second daughter said, Come on, I ll do it with you, let s apologize to grandpa together. This appeared to have some effect and he stopped throwing a tantrum, but answered, I won t! and left the room. My father laughed it off, but my husband apologized for the boy. After the cleaning of the Buddhist altar it was time for our evening meal, and when the food was ready, our son appeared from nowhere, still sulking. He sat down in his chair with a loud, purposeful bang. Just as I was thinking, Oh, no, he s still in a bad mood, he suddenly began to cry. Through his tears he blurted out, Grandpa, I m sorry for the bad things I said before. My father answered, That s all right, I didn t mind. Everyone chimed in happily, saying, What a good boy, and That s a good thing we re so glad you apologized. Hearing this, our son breathed a great big sigh of relief, and a bright, cheerful smile spread across his face. With the tears still drying on his cheeks but beaming ever more brightly with joy, he started happily eating his supper. Even as small a child as that for a certainty has a buddha residing in his heart. When we put away our small measure of pride and apologize from the bottom of our hearts, we become truly happy and secure. This is a lesson our son taught me that day.
