1 Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 6 Volume 57 Rissho Kosei-kai 2010 This month I would like to introduce the third of the Six Perfections forbearance. Forbearance can also refer to perseverance and patience. Living in Los Angeles, California, and commuting to the next county, Orange County, to my office, I need to take four freeways. And every day the commuting is an opportunity to practice the perfection of forbearance. On the freeway the maximum speed is 65 miles per hour, which translates to 104 kilometers per hour. Most drivers go about 70 miles per hour, and a great number of drivers go 80 to 90 mph. Driving about an hour on the freeway is a very challenging and useful training in the practice of forbearance. When I first started driving the long commute between work and home a couple of years ago, I constantly honked my horn when many cars would cut in front of me, dangerously close to almost hitting me. Then at night during my drive home, when these speedy drivers cut in, I would flicker the high beams of my headlights as they sped by me. The result of these actions in my daily commute was very stressful, and upon reaching my office my motivation and energy were drained. The same thing would happen upon reaching home in the evening, and my attitude was not comforting to my wife and adult son. But slowly as I practiced and recited the sutra in the mornings and evenings, I started to let go of my impulsive actions on the freeway. And I let these speedy drivers go on their way without me being reactive and combative. Now, maybe only one out of ten times will I flicker the high beams of my headlights in my evening commute. I am still working towards zero out of the ten times. So my daily Buddhist practice is incorporated in my daily commutes. Thank you, Buddha, for letting me practice every day towards the Six Perfections. The Republic of Macedonia is an agricultural country located to the north of Greece. About two million people live there. In recent years, the country is known as the birthplace of Mother Theresa. In ancient times, Alexander the Great expanded his territory from the Balkan Peninsula and Egypt in the west, to the basin of the Indus River in the east. The international airport is called Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, in commemoration of the historic king. In the capital city of Skopje, a member of Rissho Kosei shares the great king s name. His name is Aleksandar Dimovski. He learned about Rissho Kosei-kai through the Internet, and came to understand its teachings and activities through books from Kosei Publishing Company, which is affiliated with Rissho Kosei-kai. Aleksandar was so impressed with the spirit of the Lotus Sutra that he translated the Threefold Lotus Sutra, Buddhism for Today, and A Guide to the Threefold Lotus Sutra into Macedonian. He also extracted some chapters from the sutra, and edited Macedonian sutra readings for his daily recitation. In this way, he is able to cultivate the field of his heart and mind through morning and evening recitation of the sutra before his home altar.

2 Guidance by President Niwano Bright and Warm as the Sun President of Rissho Kosei-kai Nichiko Niwano In the Suttanipata, one of the oldest collections of the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, we find these words of his: Solar by clan, Shakyas by birth. From that lineage I have gone forth. This was Shakyamuni s response when asked about his origins by King Bimbisara, who was deeply impressed by the noble demeanor of the mendicant Shakyamuni. It is said that at that time the king dismounted from his royal carriage, sat down before Shakyamuni, and happily exchanged greetings. The virtue conveyed by Shakyamuni s serene and relaxed appearance seemed to emit rays of light that, just as his lineage has suggested, were so bright they lit up the surrounding area as if the sun had come down to the earth. Of course, this impression was not created merely by his outer appearance. The light was not only a reflection of his sublime exterior, it was the radiance shining from the wisdom that flowed from a mind always alert and clear. This is evident from the following words that Shakyamuni said to the king, who had offered donations of material things: I did not renounce secular life in order to fulfill physical desires. For from desire comes suffering, while in diligence there is peace and comfort. My mind delights in making every effort to advance spiritually. Perceiving well what causes the mind to become tranquil and brings true serenity, Shakyamuni thus used his wisdom to speak pleasantly yet frankly, and so guiding the king to the teaching and leading him to take refuge in the Dharma. The aura of brightness has great power to attract people. The rays of light that seem released from within shine on others. For us, striving to achieve the brightness of the sun can be called our ideal.

3 When we speak of the sun, the impression that most of us have is of a provider of warmth. Of course, that may not be the way people in scorching arid desert areas think of it. In Japan, however, the sun does indeed bathe the land in warmth and empowers plants and trees to send forth buds that blossom in the spring in other words, it provides the spark of life as the source of the necessary energy. In that regard, the brightness and warmth of the sun are also essential for the lives of human beings. If we speak in concrete terms of the type of words and deeds that create warmth, we can say that, first of all, being open-minded and seeing the goodness in other people is the first step in being warmhearted. Just as the sun causes plants to sprout and grow, being considerate toward others and recognizing their positive qualities, and encouraging their further development through kindness and compassion is to demonstrate our genuine warmth. Furthermore, sympathizing with others when they are enduring difficult circumstances, and wishing them well and encouraging them to rebuild their lives are examples of our warmheartedness. Ryokan ( ), a Zen monk, of Echigo was himself poor and could not support people in difficulty with either money or goods. He was eager to share warm feelings with them at least through kind words, which resulted in the many poems and other writings he left to us. This was an embodiment of his natural kindness and compassion. Displaying warmheartedness has nothing to do with gain or loss, or with winning or losing. It arises from the realization that it is all right to lose sometimes. When we adopt the attitude of accepting every type of circumstance and acknowledging its value just as the sun shines unconditionally upon the entire earth, or just as a mother is devoted lovingly to raising all her children then we can calmly accept whatever life brings. Our inner natures gain new breadth and we become endowed with feelings of warmth and kindness. When our eyes are fixed only on practicality and achieving abundant results and we concentrate only on getting ahead of others, losing will then only cause us to suffer. Once we become free of the obsession with competing, however, we can learn the value of failure, come to know what is sufficient, and then we can, on our own, lead lives of cheerful optimism. Most important for us as members is diligence in becoming like the sun, shining on many other people the light of the wisdom we have gained and the warmth of our compassion. 4 In the Footsteps of the Founder K a i s o - s a m a n i N a r a i t e President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Kosho Niwano Kaisosama ni Naraite It has been said from long ago that the Sutras of Great Extent are the masters of compassion. We really must make compassion the first order of business in our hoza counseling sessions [a unique form of group counseling which is guided by experienced leaders]. When we display compassion, the problems raised in the sessions begin to be resolved, the session itself becomes of great interest, and all the steps discussed start to be put into practice. (Hosshin [Raising Aspirations], monthly magazine, August 1989) In the words of Founder Nikkyo Niwano, We can all become happy if we look at things with compassionate eyes, as the Buddha did. How can we best put into practice what the founder has demonstrated for us to see with compassionate eyes and open the way to liberation through hoza sessions? What does it mean to make compassion the first order of business? The Buddha is the force that brings about liberation, but achieving this also depends on what we ourselves do. We are all granted countless opportunities to interact with others. Whether or not we can make our hoza sessions scenes of liberation depends on how we approach problems of another person and whether we can listen with empathy to the person s inner voice. Without the gift of encounters with others, we cannot attain enlightenment and be happy by ourselves alone. Hoza sessions are a good place for us to learn this lesson from each other. At one time, there was a married couple who had been living separate existences under the same roof for many years. Of all the problems raised at their Dharma Center, this was one that everyone was united in the desire to solve. One after another, all kinds of ways and means were tried to get the couple to start talking to each other again, but somehow the situation never changed. An opportunity later arose, however, for some of the members to ask the founder about the situation. His response was: Do you realize how hard it must be for them to live in the same house year after year without ever speaking to each other? They must be making a strenuous effort to keep at this. You should be as nice as you can to them. Only when you naturally respect the individuality of others will your explanations of the Dharma sink into their hearts as the very words of the Buddha. (Hosshin, April, 1991) On hearing the words of the founder, the chapter head did not at first understand and her mind went blank. She did realize, however, that everything the chapter members had been doing so far with all good intentions had been backfiring. They had made no attempt

5 whatever to see the buddha-nature of the estranged man and wife. All they had done was to keep preaching and trying to change the troubled couple for the better so that they would see the pair sharing their lives again. Because we are all being given life in a context consisting of the working of the Buddha, in hoza sessions the truth reveals itself clearly before our eyes* that if I act this way, the person I am dealing with will act that way. Faith in the fact that we live in the Buddha s world and are being sustained to live by the Buddha begins with faith in just one other person. All we need is true faith in that one person. (Hosshin, October 1987) We tend to concern ourselves particularly with the faults in other people and try to correct them. Even when you are faced with situations that look as if they are only causing difficulties, however, if we can discover even one positive aspect it can open the way toward a solution. The ability to do this lies in the possession and daily application of a warm, compassionate attitude. With this ability, the problem itself then seems to our eyes as a tiny window in the wall of a dark prison. In other words, we realize that it is an opportunity to discover the buddha-nature in ourselves and others. As soon as we let ourselves flow out through that tiny window, we see a harmonious world in which all things are manifestations of the buddha-nature. Our liberation starts to grow from the moment we see that harmonious world. Rather than trying to eloquently preach the Dharma, I think it is better to talk to people so as to give them hope and expectations for a brighter future. I think we should do our best every day to say whatever we can to encourage people to feel that they are living worthwhile lives. (Kosei, monthly magazine, August 1958) In time, the chapter head paid a visit to the couple with a more thoughtful attitude and appreciation for the great effort they were making, hoping simply to offer to help in any way that she could. However, she found nobody at home. In fact, not long before on that very day, the husband had suddenly fallen seriously ill. His wife called for an ambulance and went with him to the hospital. After he recovered and was discharged from the hospital, they went together to the Dharma Center to express their appreciation to the members. For the first time they spoke of their own accord to the others about the various problems that had led them to lead separate lives under the same roof. You should approach the person in front of you holding your hands in prayer and truly worshiping that person s spirit, with the feeling that this person has been sent to me by the Buddha to teach me what I need to know piece by piece. When you do this, every person will tell you various true things about him or herself without being asked. (Hosshin, July 1991) What you need to learn from another person is not the cause of his or her suffering, but how and why the person has managed to go on living and striving in the midst of that suffering. When you hear this you will have heard that person s most precious tale, and thus be able to recognize and worship his or her buddha-nature. In the event that you can also enable that person to become conscious of his or her buddha-nature, true liberation will be the result. The Buddha has given us a treasure that never dwindles even though we use it throughout our whole lives. We have already received many precious gifts from the Buddha during

Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano. Mother of one son and three daughters. our lives so far. To feel truly happy, we need to be able to access that treasure even when we are troubled. Trouble is not necessarily a bad situation it can be an opportunity for our awakening. When you look with compassionate eyes at your own or someone else s suffering, you will see that it is bodhisattva practice, and then even suffering becomes a basis for achieving happiness. If we can approach the problems of others with compassionate eyes, as the founder did, and see the precious opportunities within those problems, the discussions we have of difficulties in hoza sessions will never deteriorate into mere gossip. In fact, such discussions will then become truly helpful and charitable, bringing happiness to all. This kind of hoza session allows everyone to speak freely and becomes an opportunity for the Dharma to come alive. Hoza sessions are the lifeblood of Rissho Kosei-kai. They form the core of our practice of faith. (Niwano Nikkyo Jiden [Lifetime Beginner], p. 189) Without the ability to perceive the happiness of the present moment, an ambitious spirit that sees what is lacking and strives for improvement will find in its ambition the seeds of anxiety and suffering. People who are happy are people who are skillful at finding true joy. When you seek what you can be grateful for, you will live a rich life; but when you concentrate on what you lack, you enter the path of pain and suffering. We should not always speak of and look at the bad sides to one s character. We should look with thoughtful regard at what a person is striving for and what he or she is suffering. When I think of the founder who spoke those words above, I am reminded of the kindness with which he always regarded others. Unless our own hearts are warm and pure like the Buddha s, we cannot bring liberation to another. That is the point to remember. 7 The Gift That Cancer Gave Me Part 2 by Rev. Koichi Kawamoto, Minister of Takefu Dharma Center piritual SJourney * This personal testimony was shared during the ceremony of the monthly memorial day of the Founder on April 4, 2010, at the Great Sacred Hall. This is the second of the three serialized installments. cried before my surgery. Then, she attentively listened to the doctor s explanation and prayed for me. I am so grateful for her. What I learned through this experience is that even if we have religious faith, we will still eventually get sick. But faith gives up an opportunity to be prepared for such times, and to be aware of how precious our health is. My family would suffer if I were not in good health. When one is physically ill, one s senses and thinking ability are compromised; this hinders one s ability to fully comprehend the Buddha s teaching. This life of mine does not idly exist here but has meaning. I realized that what matters to be is that I live a meaningful life. 1 I went back home, performed my devotions, and recited the sutra before my home altar. During the recitation, thoughts that I m alive! and Something great has allowed me to live! welled up from the bottom of my mind. During the evening sutra recitation, my younger child came to sit beside me. She was 9 years old at the time. She might not have understood the details of what was happening to her father, but she just snuggled up next to me. I felt a lump in my throat as she did so. We recited the sutra together that night. Once again, I felt a deep sense of appreciation toward the many people who were concerned about me, and who had performed devotional services for me. Of those who were worried about me, the closest was my wife. Why did you have to get this disease, even though you did nothing wrong? she 234 In December of this year, I was appointed as minister of Takefu Dharma Center. Ms. A, who is a member of my center, was asked by her chapter head if she would receive the Gohonzon, or the focus of devotion of Rissho Kosei-kai. But Ms. A refused, because the walls of her house were full of holes. About 10 years ago, her eldest son began to shut himself in at home and pound on the walls with irritation. So she said that she could not invite the people to come to her house. She also said her family had no money and that her husband did not approve of her faith in the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai. In 2009, when she received an appointment as a Dharma Leader, she experienced a change of heart, and wondered, should I receive the Gohonzon? Although she carried out the practice of guiding other members to religious activities in order to accumulate religious merits, her son didn t change. Because of this situation, Ms. A thought, if I receive the Gohonzon, my son might change, so she decided to receive the focus of devotion. As soon as Ms. A made her decision, her father who also lived in the home suddenly declared, I will renovate our house. She had long believed that her father was to blame for her mother s suicide at the age of 47. From her childhood, she had always felt that her father was a mean and self-centered person who oppressed his children, and that there was always trouble at home. She gradually rebelled against her father. She got married so she could leave home, but she had to go back to her home from Nagoya because of her mother s death. After returning to her native town in Fukui, Ms. A was discontented, because she was on bad terms with her father and her husband often went to a pachinko parlor. The harder she worked, the more often her husband went to the parlor to carelessly spend money, so she became angry with him. 11 years ago, Ms. A s son began to stay at home. At home, she could not talk with her son, or with her father. When her father would enter a room, Ms. A would leave it. When she visited other members houses, and saw their families happily talking, she envied them. Her sister said, You don t talk to our father or your son. But try speaking to them. As she walked around the neighborhood, guiding people to Rissho Kosei-kai s activities, she saw happy families, and began to think, I will try to talk with my father a little. 8 The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano The Spirit of Mottainai, What a Waste! This story is about something that happened at a women s junior college. Soon after the woman who cleaned the school buildings quit her job for some reason or another, waste paper piled up in the classrooms. But the students did not make any effort to clean up the mountains of waste paper. Even worse, they simply kicked the papers aside, making a terrible mess. One professor found it impossible to stand by and watch this happen, and ordered the girls to clean up their rooms. But the student council protested, It isn t our job to clean the school buildings. It s the school authorities who are negligent, since they haven t hired a new cleaning lady. I read this story in a newspaper, and one comment said that the Koichiro Yoshida, who is responsible for translation and publishing at RK International, returned from Iran with a big smile. Mr. Yoshida flew to Tehran in May to wrap up final arrangements for the publication of a Persian translation of the Threefold Lotus Sutra. The contract for the publication was concluded with no problem. By November of this year, the Threefold Lotus Sutra will be published for the first time students indifference in just kicking the paper scraps aside was horrifying. This sort of behavior is not limited to students at a women s junior college. I wonder if this sort of thing happens around all of us from time to time. I often see people leave a light on, leave food uneaten or leave a garbage can dirty, not caring a bit about it. These kinds of behaviors show the true state of people s hearts and minds. If we lose the spirit of mottainai, What a waste, we will be spiritually poor. I am afraid that our community will be a place where no one can know a true sense of satisfaction, however affluent society may be. Mr. Askari Pashai, who translated the sutra, had also translated many difficult technical books in the past. Recently, however, Mr. Pashai has shifted his focus to providing easy-tounderstand Buddhist books to general readers. So he has already translated Founder Niwano s commentary on the Threefold Lotus Sutra, his biography of Shakyamuni Buddha, and other books into the Persian language. Now, through these publications, people living in a Persian-speaking area will have the chance to know the Founder s thoughts on Buddhism. The divine guidance given in 1945 indicated that the Lotus Sutra will be spread all over the world through Rissho Kosei-kai. Although it is happening gradually, that prediction is about to be realized. (Kotaro Suzuki) Rissho Kosei-kai is a lay Buddhist organization whose holy scripture is the Threefold Lotus Sutra. It was established by Founder Nikkyo Niwano and Co-founder Myoko Naganuma in This organization is composed of ordinary men and women who have faith in the Buddha and strive to enrich Rissho Kosei-kai their spirituality by applying his teachings to their daily lives. At both the local community and international levels, we, under the guidance of the President Nichiko Niwano are very active in promoting peace and well-being through altruistic activities and cooperation with other organizations.
