1 Buddha's Wisdom Changes Your Life 2009 Volume 52 Rissho Kosei-kai 12 Essentials for Good Living All things are devoid of a separate self is one of the central teachings of Buddhism; it means that everything in the world is linked to all other things. Nothing that exists that is separate and cut off from the rest of the world. Was anyone born on their own, without parents to produce them? No one came into the world this way. Everyone needs a father and a mother. And those fathers and mothers have their fathers and mothers. When you really think about this fact, you can see that our present selves are the product of other lives that are linked all the way back to ancient times. This is very mysterious, isn t it? This idea goes even deeper. Have you ever been encouraged or inspired by music, or a poem? Maybe you have moved by watching a movie or by listening to music. This means you are indirectly linked with the person who created such works of art. Even though things like a stone on a road, or a bird flying in the sky may, on the surface, seem to have nothing to do with you personally, they are connected to you. If you can understand this, recent world concerns like global warming and problems of society become your direct concern. Then you can begin to take these issues seriously. Becoming conscious of your connection with others means noticing that you are not alone, and that your life is interdependent with so many other lives. Then, you can naturally feel appreciation towards everything in the world. If all people learn to respect others around them (and even those people who are not around them), the urge to fight will never arise. New overseas ministers were appointed on 1st of December, 2009.

Guidance by President Niwano Putting Our Palms Together President of Rissho Kosei-kai Nichiko Niwano Happy new year! With our hearts full of hope and gratitude as we wish each other a successful year, let us be cheerful, joyful, and diligent. At every New Year s season, following the founder s example I do my first calligraphy of the year. I select two subjects for this and the results are mounted on two hanging scrolls. One of the subjects in recent years is gassho, meaning placing the palms together in prayer. The act of placing the palms together in this way is inseparably connected with faith, and since we Buddhists follow the principle of revering the buddha-nature in others, the spirit of the act is just as important for lay practitioners as it is for monks and nuns. Placing the palms together in prayer does not seem to have its origin in Buddhism, however. Someone once wrote about the act of placing the palms together We have, since ancient times, put our palms together to pay homage to the gods and the buddhas, and when we do this, we are engaging in spiritual communion with the gods and the buddhas. In fact, a clay figurine of a seated figure with hands clasped in prayer and eyes raised to heaven was excavated at a Jomon era (about 14,000 B.C.E. to about 400 B.C.E.) archeological site in Japan. So placing the palms together must be an extremely ancient form of prayer. In Europe, people say that placing the palms together is communicating with God. In all parts of the world, the aspiration to follow the Absolute, the Wondrous in other words, the Truth and the Dharma leads people to spontaneously place their palms together. From another perspective, it can be said that when people place their palms together they become truthful and return to their basic humility. Placing the palms together calming the mind by bringing the left and right hands together in the center of the body and closing the eyes to gaze inward creates a sense of balance in all of the organs of the body. This could be considered a basic position that promotes our physical and mental health.

Whenever the founder met other people, he placed his hands together before them. We members of Rissho Kosei-kai good friends in the Dharma also usually greet one another by placing our palms together. We do not need to reevaluate the importance of placing our palms together in this way, but we need to ask ourselves if in our everyday lives we are placing our palms together before the people nearest us, our friends and immediate family. Some people can pray before images of the Buddha but not before other people. And some people may say they would never even dream of placing their palms together before the members of their own families. Shakyamuni never gave preferential treatment to any member of his own family. He accepted as disciples those relatives who wanted to become followers. He respected all members of his family equally. Children are not the personal property of their parents, so it is important that all family members place their palms together before each other as a first step in respecting and appreciating their individual personalities. The Bodhisattva Never Despise, who appears in the Lotus Sutra, reverently placed his palms together before everyone he met, telling them, You will certainly become buddhas. This practice of revering all symbolizes the substance of the enlightenment attained by the Buddha the realization of the preciousness of all things. We ourselves are not the only ones who deserve respect. Of course, so do the members of our families, but so does everyone else who has received the precious gift of life. In other words, the fundamental principle permeating all living beings is mutual respect. Placing the palms together in reverence is the form that only human beings are able to perform to manifest the spirit of mutual respect. Therefore, a world in which everyone placed their palms together in this way would be a world free of conflict. Placing one s palms together is the simplest, most immediate religious act, and helps to achieve peace and harmony. At the same time, of course, it is not necessary for us to insist upon the form of placing the palms together. What matters most is that we offer reverence to people in a spirit of mutual respect, truthfully follow the Dharma, and place our palms together in prayer before the gods and the buddhas. The underlying meaning of this act of placing one s palms together is that this simple act could grow into a religious movement which would reflect the basic essence of Buddhism. All over the world, people are calling for lasting peace. Each of us, all of us, one by one, fully realizing the spirit of placing one s palms together and regularly following this practice can be of profound significance. 4 In the Footsteps of the Founder K a i s o - s a m a n i N a r a i t e President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Kosho Niwano Kaisosama ni Naraite Shakyamuni said very clearly that all living things are endowed with the buddha-nature. When we thoroughly grasp this in a tangible way, we will, like the Bodhisattva Never Despise described in chapter 20 of the Lotus Sutra, become unable to refrain from venerating every person we meet, and feel worshipful toward them from the heart. (Hosshin, [Raising Aspirations], March 1992) While on a pilgrimage to the Enjitsuji temple on Mount Hakii in Yamanashi Prefecture, Founder Nikkyo Niwano visited a nearby Rissho Kosei-kai Dharma Center. A meeting was organized for members to receive guidance from the founder, and at the meeting a young woman who was in charge of the activities of high school students of the Dharma Center raised her hand. While I was helping out at the Dharma Center, I accidentally injured my little finger. Please tell me in what spirit I should accept this happening to me. In response, the founder broke into a sunny smile and said, If you are so advanced in your devotions while still so young, by the time you reach my age you ll be a buddha! The young woman tried to change herself through recognizing the reason why she had injured her finger. What the founder was communicating here, however, was the great value of a pure heart that seeks to contact one s inner spirit through the medium of even such minor things. The founder s words no doubt helped the young woman touch her buddha-nature. She later noted, Since that time there have been occasions when I have felt close to being defeated by adversity, but then I remember the founder s smile and words, and continue my religious practice. The reason we place our hands together in a prayerful attitude when we exchange ordinary greetings such as good morning or expressions of gratitude such as thanks for your trouble is to more perfectly refine and bring out the buddha-nature that each of us has inside. (Niwano Nikkyo Howa Senshu [Selected Sermons of Nikkyo Niwano], no. 3, p. 211) The founder always put his hands together when greeting every person he met, including all his family members, even us grandchildren. When he was near us, we always found that our happiest feelings would well up inside us and we would become hopeful and eager to please others. It was not so much that the founder did not blame us if we did something wrong or that he forgave us, but that he was always able to find within us and bring out the Buddha spirit that we ourselves could not see, and cast light upon it. One day when our family was holding sutra chanting service, the founder was officiating and I thought that the pace at which he was reading was too slow, and that I would not be able to leave the house when I was supposed to, and though I realized it was unkind, I tried to hasten the pace of the chantings. Naturally my voice grew louder. When the greatly speeded up service ended, the founder s entire face beamed in a big smile as he looked behind him, and he said, Well, today s service was certainly vigorious now, that was great

President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano. Mother of one son and three daughters. sutra chanting! And though I felt embarrassed and regretful for not following the founder s pace, his words made me glad. This was not because I had not been cautioned about not following his pace. It was because, like a magician, the founder had suddenly pulled out and showed me the buddha-nature within me of which I myself had not been aware. No matter with whom you are dealing, if you truly want to guide someone to the Dharma, you must embrace a feeling of respect for that person. When you greet everyone you meet with your hands placed together, this shows that you trust them and believe in their buddha-nature and the spirit of the Buddha that resides in their true self, thus you are showing reverence for their characters in their highest form. As seen with particular clarity in the way the Lotus Sutra describes how the Bodhisattva Never Despise revered all people he met, the act of greeting every single person with your hands placed together serves as a means and opportunity for awakening the aspiration to supreme enlightenment in that person. (Hosshin, [Raising Aspirations], June 1986) When we grandchildren rang the bell or beat the Buddhist wooden block during sutra chantings, the founder would always be pleased and tell us, Great sound! You did that well. At mealtimes he would praise the preparation of the food, saying, Meals at our house are the best in the world! He always communicated a great warmth that arose from his way of seeing only the best in people, seeing only their Buddhist heart. Thus, when the founder was present, we never worried about anything and always felt secure. A sudden feeling of warmth would arise in us whenever we thought about how we would always like to be someone who could please the founder. The Buddha appeared in the world to help all people attain buddhahood, and our faith in Buddhism occurs so that we can accept the wish of the Buddha without cynicism and contribute to each and every person s growth toward becoming a buddha. This is why we wonder how we can achieve the same state of mind as the Buddha, and seek to know what to do in order to attain buddhahood. (San Reizan Meiso [Meditations of Three Holy Mountains], p.16) Kaiso-sama ni Naraite

Real Invitation, Welcome and Inclusion Our Present Hope and Our Future Mr. John Michael Kyoji Schuh, New York Dharma Center Chicago Branch piritual SJourney This personal testimony was shared during the 50th Anniversary of Dissemination in U.S. Ceremony. This will be serialized in two segments. Let me begin with a quote from the Lotus Sutra, Chapter 21, The Divine Power of the Tathagata, Just as the light of the sun and moon Can chase all darkness away, These people, practicing in this world Can bring living beings out of darkness, And cause countless bodhisattvas, To at last abide in the One Vehicle. My name is John Michael Kyoji Schuh. I have been a member of New York Church, Chicago Branch for twenty-five years. It is a great honor to give my testimony on the 50th anniversary of Risshō Kōsei-kai s mission activities in the United States. I am the oldest of three children and was raised in a middle class Chicago suburb. My father was a laborer and an alcoholic. My mother needed to work a part time job to help support us. My father would often become drunk and would verbally abuse Mom, my brother, sister and me. My childhood was often painful and I felt the profound sting of feeling unwelcome early on. In this atmosphere my siblings and I learned to mistrust and resent our father and fear our mother. Grade school was another place of torment for me. Some of my schoolmates would make fun of me and I would become defensive and cry. I was laughed at, mocked and I became a target for regular abuse. Again I felt unwelcome and excluded. I even took to running home from school at the end of the day. Once in junior high school, I was so unhappy and felt so tortured, I remember confessing to a priest that I hated my schoolmates and wanted to kill them all. Between what happened at school and what went on at home, I longed to be an adult and escape my unhappiness. After from graduating high school, I began my first year at a college seminary, but during my first semester, I fell into a deep depression due to my struggle with my sexual identity, my faith and my family. I made it through that first semester with the help of a kind priest, a social worker and friends, but during my second seminary year, I left the seminary as there was no place in the priesthood for someone with a different sexual identity. Again I was left feeling very unwelcome, but the worst was yet to come. Upon returning home, and facing my parent s anger and disappointment, I was told to get a job to help support my parents and siblings. Dad s alcoholism caused him to develop neuropathy in his hands. Dad was unsure if he would be able to work in the future. I felt confined, oppressed, lost. My parents and I argued viciously over my future. A few weeks later, my parents found out that I was gay. Mom pronounced me dead and gone to hell and I was banished from the family. I couldn t believe my ears since years earlier, my mother had told us when we were children that we would always have each other. When I asked the reason for her feelings, she told me that her decision was based on her Christian beliefs. At that moment, the very faith that sustained me through the years of my childhood unhappiness had been taken away. I burned with hatred and anger deep down inside. I felt deeply wounded, betrayed and unwelcome in the Christian church and abandoned by my family. A few years later, at age 23, I became interested in Japanese Buddhism through a book published by Bukkyō Dendo Kyōkai. Around the same time, I started learning Japanese. I told my Japanese tutor that I was interested in Buddhism. She recommended I contact a friend who belonged to Risshō Kōsei-kai and I attended a Sunday

service and hōza at a local member s home. When I had arrived, the members were reciting the Kyōden in Japanese. After the ancestor appreciation service, we had a hōza and one of the members was kind enough to translate. Afterward, Mr. Satō told me about Kōsei-kai, the meaning of the ancestor veneration service and the Founder s teachings. I was very impressed by all that I saw and heard and I decided to join. There was no hesitation on my part. I felt the joy of being welcome. In Risshō Kōsei-kai I found a new spiritual home. The branch leader assigned Mr. Yasuo Satō to be my Dharma parent. Through his fatherly guidance, I became very serious in my study of the Lotus Sutra and Kōsei-kai doctrine. I came to respect Mr. Satō s knowledge of Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra and loved him like a father. It was Satō-san s kindhearted guidance as my Dharma parent that sustained me for the first eleven years of my membership in our Church. I believe that without his guidance, I might have lost interest and drifted away as other English speakers had. Through his guidance, I found a new connection with my family through performing daily ancestor appreciation services. Ultimately, though, that was not enough. I still carried the pain of being exiled from my family and those many years of trauma and hurt whenever I thought of my parents. I felt angry and I felt very sad. I feared my parents would never accept me back. I so wanted their love and acceptance. I so wanted to be welcomed home. Five years later, after attending many hōza sessions and with the loving guidance of Mr. Satō, I gathered the courage to return home to apologize to my parents for my disrespect and hateful words at our parting. Mr. Satō guided me to have no expectations and accept whatever my parents offered me - even their rejection as the Buddha s compassion. When I returned home, my parents were surprised at my appearance. I apologized wholeheartedly for what I had said years before. Mom and Dad accepted my apologies. At that time, so many years ago, I felt the great weight I had carried for five years lift from my shoulders. Even though this all took place many years ago, I am still working on transforming my relationship with my parents and working to welcome them more fully back into my heart. (to be continued...) With overseas Sangha members (upper center in orange) Mr. Schuh attended a Dharma Leaders Training seminar held at the headquarters of Rissho Kosei-kai (center) Shanzai welcomes your religious experience.why don't you share your religious experience through Shanzai with members all over the world?please send the script or inquiry to the address; shanzai.rk-international@kosei-kai.or.jp. Thank you.

The Teaching of Founder Nikkyo Niwano January is the month we straighten out ourselves Happy New Year everyone. While we are alive, we all have various wishes such as I want to ---, or I wish ---. Now that the new year has begun, you have already started to wish for various things. Prayer is important, especially for people of faith. But, I would like you to follow one principle strictly as we begin this year: Ask yourself whether what you are wishing for is just for yourself, or if it will benefit others as well. First of all, it is important to reflect upon whether you are truly the kind of person who is worthy of what you are wishing for. And I think that the attitude of true prayer is to say, I will make further efforts to become the kind of person who is worthy of my wish, so please be mindful of what I do. In Japanese, we use the Chinese characters, ᱜ -straighten (ourselves) and month for January. January is the month that we straighten out our attitudes of mind and begin the year anew. Please enjoy Otoso (-the new year s spiced Sake) with such determination. From Kaisozuikan 4 (Kosei Publishing Co.)
