Buddha s Wisdom Changes Your Life Rissho Kosei-kai Vol The World of the Lotus Sutra O The Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma The Sutra of Contemplation of the Dharma Practice of Universal Sage Bodhisa va NE day, the Buddha said to all the monks: My teaching in this world is complete. After three months, I will surely enter complete nirvana. Then Ananda, Maha-Kashyapa, and Maitreya Bodhisattva spoke to the Buddha in one voice: World-honored One, after the extinction of the Tathagata, how can living beings aspire to bodhisattvahood, follow the Great Vehicle sutras that can free everyone from suffering, and correctly ponder and understand the world of one truth? How can they maintain their aspiration for unexcelled awakening? Without cutting off their afflictions and renouncing the five desires, how can they purify their sense organs and completely rid themselves of their sins? With the natural pure eyes received at birth from their parents, and without leaving the world of the five desires, how can they see past their hindrances? In response, the Buddha said to Ananda: By embracing and grasping the meaning of the virtue of practice of Universal Sage Bodhisattva, their sincere wishes will coincide with the spirit of the bodhisattva, their minds will be fixed on the Way of the Buddha, they will eventually be able to perform the same practice as Universal Sage Bodhisattva. If they have not yet attained such a state, they should self-reflect upon and repent of their inadequate understanding of the Dharma.. And when they have performed the same practice as Universal Sage Bodhisattva, they should thoroughly persist in self-reflection and repentance. By doing so, they will become firmly conscious of being with the Buddha. Furthermore, their six sense organs will be purified, thus attaining the Buddha s superior wisdom of realizing the true nature of all things. So, repentance lies in realizing the true character of all things as taught in the Dharma Flower Sutra. Then, Shakyamuni taught five actual practices of repentance, and addressed his concluding remarks to Ananda. In the future, when anyone studies and puts into practice these teachings of repentance, you should know that such a person has put on robes of contrition, is helped and protected by the buddhas, and before long will attain supreme awakening. As these words were spoken, ten thousand children of heaven acquired the purity of the eyes of the Dharma that can see the true aspect or character of all things. And all the great bodhisattvas, Maitreya Bodhisattva and others, and Ananda too, upon hearing the Buddha preach, rejoiced and acted accordingly. The preaching of the Sutra of Contemplation of the Dharma Practice of Universal Sage Bodhisattva was the complete, and those who heard it were deeply moved. This series of articles, The World of the Lotus Sutra, started in December This month s installment is the final one in the series. We are preparing a new series for our forthcoming issues. 2 Guidance by President Niwano People on Whom Others Rely by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai Gently, with a Smile Chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra, The Universal Gateway of the Bodhisattva Kannon, contains these lines of verse: Her true regard, pure regard, / Vast wisdom regard, / Merciful regard, and compassionate regard / Are always aspired to and ever revered! Praising the gentle gaze of Kannon, who watches over people and the entire world, these famous lines of the Lotus Sutra, called the five regards, urge us to take Kannon as our model. The above verse can be interpreted in modern terms as follows: Seeing this world as it truly is (true regard), we can attain a pure perspective unclouded by ego and attachments (pure regard), and thereby can grasp that everything is a manifestation of the life of the Buddha and no matter what or whom we encounter, we are able to think of ourselves and others as one (vast wisdom regard). Therefore, the suffering of other people becomes our own suffering and we cannot stop ourselves from praying that the source of that suffering will be removed (merciful regard). At the same time, we feel welling up inside ourselves the desire to make happy as many people as possible (compassionate regard). With the wish to attain such eyes we hope we can aspire to revere the Bodhisattva Kannon and we want to make her our model. When we regard Kannon as a model, however, her mental state may seem far beyond us, but actually, even though we may be unaware of it, we are already engaging in activities that are similar to the five regards. For example, in the course of our daily lives, when we ask people to do something and they do not hesitate to undertake the task, we think of them as being reliable. If those people have ego and attachments, they would not be willing to deal with our request. With this thought in mind, when someone asks us to do something we should, without presenting an unpleasant expression, say gently with a smile, Yes, of course. In such interactions with the people in our daily lives we can observe the working of the five regards. Those who can naturally do this gain the trust of many others. Parental Love Involves Sacrifice We are often told that the qualities of a leader are having plenty of mettle that comes from firm convictions, and cheerfully, positively accepting whatever may occur. At the same time, these are also the qualities of someone who is genuinely reliable. Whenever Founder Niwano attended a function somewhere outside of Rissho Kosei-kai facilities, he made his best effort to arrive at the SHAN ZAI November 2013

appointed place at least five minutes early. His attitude of never showing favoritism and giving his full attention to every detail, no matter how minor it might seem, represents the true value of Founder Niwano on whom so many people relied. When the founder was making strenuous efforts to organize a World Assembly of the World Conference of Religions for Peace, or when some inconsequential difficulty occurred in his immediate surroundings, he would accept everything positively and describe every situation as a bright prospect and turn it into an advantage. I think that is why many people considered him to be such a dependable leader. I often hear people say that when they were facing a problem, they were saved by Founder Niwano s smile. Just as people are attracted to a fragrant flower, the smile of his leadership brightened everyone like the blossoming of a beautiful flower. The Japanese word meaning to bloom apparently is the origin of the word for to smile. The phrase I used above, gently with a smile means, in other words, that human beings should think of themselves as flowers, and strive to blossom to their fullest, aspiring to become the kind of people who, with just such a smile, others will rely upon. However, being relied upon by others in some cases means being used at their convenience. To quote a satirical verse, Mothers are too precious, but easy to deceive. Even though a mother knows that she is sometimes deceived by her children, she accepts this behavior and does not really mind. Most parents would make any sacrifice for their children. If they have three children, instead of trying to divide their affection by three and giving one-third to each child, they give their full affection to each child one by one. That is the true meaning of parental love. The reason that a nursing child has complete trust in its mother is because such parental love is being transmitted directly. The key to being someone on whom others rely is at all times to have the same degree of consideration for others as undivided parental love, which is equal to the compassion of Kannon. 4 Smiles Are like Flowers from Heaven by Rev. Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Miss Forgetful The year our second daughter entered elementary school, our eldest daughter was in the third grade, our youngest daughter was starting in kindergarten, and I was pregnant with our son, due in September of that year. I also had my responsibilities at Rissho Kosei-kai, mainly dealing with ceremonies at its headquarters complex and the compilation of the Dharma talks and written works of Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, founder of the organization, and so I left our second daughter s school matters in the hands of her elder sister. I was probably unable to give more than a cursory glance to her curriculum. The following year when she was in the second grade was much the same. Adding in the fact that her baby brother began to crawl that year, from her point of view I would say the situation probably got worse, not better. Even so, sometimes she would seek me out and tell me about what had happened that day and what she had enjoyed. I did not have time to relax and listen carefully to her; moreover I constantly had a great deal on my mind. I listened without even turning around to look at her, giving only perfunctory replies like, Oh, really? Hmmm... with my back turned to her. Once, realizing that she had left the room before I knew it, I ended up running after her to find her flustered, embracing her, and telling her how much I appreciated it when she had talked to me. At our first teacher consultation meeting back when she was in the first grade, her homeroom teacher had told me, She s thoughtful and a thoroughly good girl. However, she constantly forgets to bring something she will need in the classroom from home... After that, I decided to carefully check to see that she was not forgetting anything, but with the demands of the other children and my work, I did not keep up with my resolve. When she was in the second grade, her homeroom teacher said, She s the one who suffers the most from her forgetfulness I wonder what is going on. She s known as Miss Forgetful. Hearing this I was ashamed for not having paid more attention to her, and sat down to discuss the matter with my daughter. Together we made a checklist of the items she needed to take to school every day. As it turned out, however, my daughter had to put the entire plan into practice by herself; I was not able to follow up to learn whether she was now leaving behind fewer things she would need. Later, when she was in the third grade, at a consultation with her new homeroom teacher, I said, I m so sorry about my daughter s forgetfulness in bringing her things to school... The teacher gave me a perplexed look and replied, I expect she has SHAN ZAI November 2013

President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano, she is mother of one son and three daughters. forgotten something maybe once, but it s not really a problem. I know that last year she was called Miss Forgetful, but I think that is a thing of the past. Please don t worry about it. I returned home in a daze, feeling disoriented as if I had been bewitched by contact with a magical fox of Japanese folklore. As soon as I went into the house I headed to look at my daughter s desk, and in her loose-leaf notebook was a checklist with the dates and items she needed on those days at school. Although written in the still-unsteady penmanship of a child, the list was comprehensive and detailed. Looking at the previous page, I found a checklist for the month before, revealing that she was very capably managing her affairs. And, indeed, her desk was much neater than it had been. Reflecting on how little I had been able to do for her, and how much she had nevertheless matured, tears came to my eyes. At that moment, she came into the room. I said to her, At today s meeting with your homeroom teacher, she praised you and I was very pleased. Your teachers have always told me what a good girl you are, but this time the teacher also told me that you no longer forget to bring things from home that are needed at school. Of course I was glad to hear that, but what really impressed me is the way you are now showing that you can think for yourself and are making an effort like this checklist. I m very proud of you. Hearing this, my daughter s face lit up with a slightly shy but very happy smile. Now she is in her second year at junior high school and enthusiastically involved in extracurricular club activities, but on weekends she still makes checklists of her school study schedules and the items she needs to bring for each activity in the coming week, which she follows carefully yet calmly. No trace of Miss Forgetful can be seen. From Yakushin, August Translated by Kosei Publishing Co. SHAN ZAI November 2013

Spiritual Journey I Was Born by Aspiration by Ms. Lim Mi Jung Korea Dharma Center This testimony was delivered during the welcome ceremony for Rev. Kosho Niwano at the Korea Dharma Center on July 3, E VERYONE, good morning. I would like to express my profound gratitude for the opportunity to share my spiritual experience on such a meaningful day, as we welcome Rev. Kosho Niwano. Ten years have passed since I first became a member of Rissho Kosei-kai in 2002, and began to lead a religious life. My mother-in-law, who had been suffering from heart failure for a long time, had died. The memorial service on the forty-ninth day after her death was conducted by Rissho Kosei-kai, and that led me to enroll as a member. I took part in weekly sutra recitation, and through the warmhearted Sangha (who care for me as they do for themselves) I started to learn the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai. Then, the Sokaimyo of Rissho Kosei-kai (the posthumous name for all the spirits of ancestors in the family) was enshrined in my home altar. I felt some regret over having the Sokaimyo enshrined, though, because reciting the sutra every morning and evening became a heavy burden for me. At the time I was busy taking care of my father-in-law, who had lost his wife, and my two boys, one in elementary and one a kindergartener. So even when the member who had first guided me to Rissho Kosei-kai called me, inviting me to join a gathering of members, it seemed like just another burden. But every time I saw the Sokaimyo in my family altar, I thought that I should not disregard it, and I felt sorry for being so negligent. I determined to at least do whatever I could manage, so I participated in duties at the Dharma center, Hoza sessions, and monthly memorial services, where I listened to other members spiritual experiences. Through these activities, I learned that the concept of others first, having a compassionate heart for others, and the importance of performing one s filial duty and ancestor veneration. But practicing these teachings at home became a source of distress for me. I couldn t interact with my father-in-law kindly and compassionately, because he suffered from dementia for the final two years of his life. He started to mess up the rooms, randomly wrapping up clothes and mattresses in bags, and got furious, shouting at me and my sons, whom he had treated so lovingly before. In addition, he started to mistakenly take me for his lost wife and couldn t even recognize even his own son, my husband. So I gradually began to treat him more and more rudely. My father-in-law had gone out and lost his way, so my husband, with tears in his eyes, decided to put him in a sanatorium. When I went to meet him in the Ms. Lim Mi Jung SHAN ZAI November 2013

Spiritual Journey I would like to rededicate myself to being diligent in becoming a warmhearted wife who can say to her husband, Thank you for working so hard for our family. facility, he introduced me to others as his wife. It pained me to see him act this way, but I still felt loathing towards him. So I gradually visited him less and less often. I shared my suffering in a Hoza session, and then I realized how sad and lonely my father-in-law had been after he lost his wife, with whom he was supposed to spend the rest of his life. I wondered why I could not understand his feelings. Even though I learned how to put myself in another s place, I couldn t sympathize with him in his loneliness. I regretted what I had done, and reflected on myself; I had become irritated at my husband, and always complained to him about his father, because I thought I was the only person who had been worrying about him. I went to meet my father-in-law instantly, and apologized to him from the bottom of my heart, while holding his hands. Maybe my concern about his loneliness reached him, because he said with a happy look, My kind daughter-in-law came to see me. It was only a moment, but after a long time, he finally called me his daughter-in-law. Hearing him say those words, I was deeply moved, and felt sorry for how I had behaved. And I also felt sorry for my husband, who had patiently listened to my complaints about his father without showing any sadness. At the same time, I felt grateful for his embrace. My husband, who works for a construction firm, has many opportunities to drink while doing business. When work becomes busy, and he drinks more, his personality can change. One day, he was drunk and went to a police station, where he behaved violently. A policeman told me that at the time, my husband said, I feel so lonely because my parents SHAN ZAI November 2013 died, and I have no one to depend on in this world. Why, when he was drunk, did he say these things in that place. What should I do next time he does this? I became lost, wondering what to do. Last year, there was an accident at his work site. A bridge connecting buildings fell down to the ground. Later I learned that he might have been crushed to death under the collapsed bridge. His life was saved by the skin of his teeth. But even though I saw how painful it was for him to deal with the accident, I wasn t too concerned about him. One day, when I received guidance at a Hoza session, I thought to myself, Have I been warmhearted and close to him, as he has been working hard for the family? Then I felt sorry for him. I saw that I had been a coldhearted wife who didn t try to understand my husband, and who just kept complaining about his drinking. At that moment, I was reminded of my father whom I hadn t thought of. My father was usually not talkative, but he was very loving towards his family. This completely changed when he got drunk. My mother and the five siblings, including me, would be worried about whether he would again become violent when he came home after drinking. When my father sobered up, he would apologize to us, saying, I won t do it again, but his worrisome behavior after drinking continued. As the result, my parents divorced; after that, my father stopped drinking alcohol and never behaved in front of us as he had before. Later, we grew distant from him, and we hadn t spoken about him. I assumed that living separately was what he wanted, and I thought ill of him. I had decided not to get married to a man who drinks alcohol, but whenever I saw how my husband s personality changed

Spiritual Journey after he drank, I was reminded of my father. It hurt me to think of my father, who didn t let us know that he was suffering from cancer, and who had struggled with the disease alone. Seven years before my father died of laryngeal cancer, he reflected on himself and said, Everything was my fault. I caused all my children a lot of pain and suffering. He also apologized to my mother, and passed away peacefully. I didn t know how to express my gratitude to him at that time, even though I should have thanked him for the fact that I was born. I can feel grateful to him now, and I wish to be a kind daughter to my mother, who is now living alone. My husband s drinking problem gave me an opportunity to wholeheartedly repent of my attitude toward my father. It also gave me an opportunity to make efforts to be the kind of wife who can understand her husband s feelings. Now, my husband is working in a local area as a site foreman. He comes back home once a week. So I would like to rededicate myself to being diligent in becoming a warmhearted wife who can say to her husband, Thank you for working so hard for our family. Thanks to the teachings of Rissho Kosei-kai, I realized that I should accept that all things are necessary for my growth as the Buddha s compassionate arrangement, instead of wondering why I have to endure a terrible experience. Since 2010, the minister and the persons in charge In the room where posthumous names are written, Ms. Lim Mi Jung shares her reflection after the memorial service for the repose of the members souls. of publication at Rissho Kosei-kai of Korea have convened a meeting once a week to revise the Korean translation of The Buddha in Everyone s Heart by Rev. Kosho Niwano. As a granddaughter of the founder, Rev. Niwano grew up seeing him at home and being close to him. Reading her memories of those experiences and the founder s words conveyed in an easy-to-understand manner, I could feel the teaching become more familiar and closer to my heart. By reading it repeatedly, the meaning of the book s words continues to sink deeply into me, and I feel as if I am meeting the founder and Rev. Kosho Niwano every week. It gives me great pleasure to have an opportunity to meet Rev. Kosho Niwano in person today. We all are the Buddha s children, and the merit from having paid homage to a trillion buddhas allows us to be born as human beings. We can see all people as having been born with the aspiration to bring others to liberation. We can say that whether one has been born into this world as a result of karma or as a result of aspiration is determined by one s degree of self-realization. By reading these words of the founder, I sensed the profound meaning of his founding of Rissho Kosei-kai. I received Gohonzon at the Great Sacred Hall on September 25th last year. I visited the headquarters in Tokyo for the first time and stayed there for three nights. By practicing during my stay, I was able to keenly feel that the wonderful teaching of Rissho Kosei-kai is applicable anywhere in the world, despite the differences of languages that we speak. Seeing the Buddha image in my family altar, I have recently come to accept wholeheartedly the teaching of birth by aspiration, which teaches us that we were willingly born with aspiration. I rededicate myself to guiding as many people as possible to the Way, so they may realize their innate Buddha-nature and their own birth by aspiration. I would like to express my gratitude to my chapter leader, who always believe and encourage me and all the Sangha. Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni, Founder Nikkyo Niwano, thank you very much. President Nichiko Niwano, thank you very much. Everyone, thank you very much. Shan Zai welcomes your religious experience. 9 THE TEACHING OF FOUNDER NIKKYO NIWANO You Are a Unique Person I MMEDIATELY after Shakyamuni Buddha was born, he walked seven steps and declared, I alone am honored in heaven and on earth. The Buddha s words also mean that each and every one of us, the children of the Buddha, is honored as well. We may all look the same on the surface. But if, for example, a piece of another person s skin is grafted onto a burn victim s body, the foreign tissue may well be rejected by the recipient. In contrast, animals like the cheetah share similar gene structures with others of their species, and are easy to graft. But because of this genetic quality, cheetahs have low fertility and tolerance to pathogens, and are facing possible extinction. Some people look back with regret, wishing they had been born as beautiful and intelligent as someone else. But if not for the significant differences between individuals, the human race could become extinct. It is our own individual nature and qualities that make us worthy of respect. The important thing is to showcase our own particular gifts, and to accept and serve our own special role in the world, helping one another. From Kaisozuikan 7 (Kosei Publishing Co.), pp Column Opening Our Innate, Infinite Potential T HIS year s Oeshiki-Ichijo Festival was held in chilly weather, under heavy rain showers. The IBC (International Buddhist Congregation) team composed of members of various nationalities residing in Japan, together with contingents from headquarters and Dharma centers in Tokyo, also joined the parade. Everyone was soaked in the cold rain. This year s parade weather was the worst I can remember. But the power of the parade participants this year was the greatest I ve seen. It may look foolish to walk around in the pouring rain, jumping up and down, but those enthusiastic participants were actually unleashing their innate power from deep inside. In the Lotus Sutra, it is explained that each one of us has the boundless potential to become a buddha. The mindset of a person who won t go out in the rain without an umbrella is the same as that of a person who will only stay within his or her own familiar framework. Such a person turns down opportunities to practice the teaching more diligently, saying, I am too busy or I can t do that. Whenever we face a situation in which we may feel it is not possible to do something, we need to move forward by saying Let me try. We need to fly straight to the Buddha s arms. Only then can we open our innate potential. R E V. S H O K O M I Z U T A N I Director of Rissho Kosei-kai International SHAN ZAI November 2013
