Rissho Kosei-kai Vol. 88 We Wish You a Very Happy New Year!! T The World of the Lotus Sutra The Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma H E World-Honored One said to the Bodhisattva Constant Effort, If those who receive and embrace this Dharma Flower Sutra, read it, or recite it, or explain it, or copy it, they will obtain eight hundred blessings of the eyes, twelve hundred blessings of the ears, eight hundred blessings of the nose, twelve hundred blessings of the tongue, eight hundred blessings of the body, and twelve hundred blessings of the mind. With these blessings they will adorn all the senses and faculties, making all of them pure. Then he continued by giving detailed explanations of blessings for each faculty: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. As to the explanation about the blessings of the eyes: The physical eyes they received from their parents at birth will be purified, and they will be able to see quite clearly whatever exists in all worlds down to the deepest purgatory and up to the highest heaven. Moreover, they will be able to see all the living beings in them and recognize distinctively all of the causes and consequences resulting from their past actions. Next, concerning the blessings of the ears: With the normal pure ears received from their parents, they will be able to hear and know all different kinds of voices distinctively and clearly due to the purification of their ears. Even more, while they will be able to distinguish all such sounds and voices, their ability to hear will not be harmed. As the blessings of the nose, their ability to smell will be purified and they will be able to distinguish without fail various kinds of fragrances in the upper and lower, inner and outer parts of all worlds. As the blessings of the tongue, whenever something is on their tongues, it will change into something delicious. Whenever one s tongue is used to preach the Dharma in the Chapter 19 The Blessings of the Dharma Teacher assembly, it will be able to give all of the audience pleasure and joy. Next, as the blessings of the body, their bodies will be purified completely. Many people will delight to see them. All things and living beings will be reflected in their bodies. Last, as the blessings of the mind, those who perform the five practices of teachers of the Dharma (receiving and embracing the sutra, reading, reciting, preaching, or copying it) after the Buddha s extinction, will obtain a fully purified mind. When they hear even a single verse or phrase of the Buddha s teaching with such pure minds, they will be able to preach on that for months or even a year. And their teachings will never be contrary to the true nature of reality. In addition, if they teach about everyday life or speak about the political world or about industry, in every case what they say will be in accord with the true Dharma. Speaking in more detail, they will know clearly all the working of the minds, the movement of the minds, and the foolishness in the minds of the beings in all worlds. Whatever they think, plan, and speak will all be in accord with the truth of the Buddha Dharma and with what previous buddhas have taught. Then the World-Honored One concluded by saying that they are able to analyze and preach because they embrace the Dharma Flower Sutra. SHAN ZAI

Guidance by President Niwano Seeing Things As They Really Are by Nichiko Niwano President of Rissho Kosei-kai The Chance to Change One s Frame of Mind Happy New Year, everyone! As a new year begins, our reactions to things also seem new. This is partly because, according to the traditional Japanese way of thinking from ancient times, each of us becomes one year older on January 1. The start of a new year therefore is an excellent opportunity to change how we feel about many things. The Japanese New Year season is rewarding because almost everyone feels a renewed sense of purpose and is determined to move forward. In fact, however, this opportunity to change one s frame of mind will be wasted unless we really do change the way we look at and accept things. Even if we suppose that we will be able to change our way of living in the new year, we will discover that doing so is hardly a simple matter. In one sense, it is only natural that we tend to let our feelings become involved in how we regard the things that happen right before our eyes. To give an example, this tendency can be symbolized by how we look at flowers: when they are in bloom, we have pleasant feelings and comment that they are pretty and make us feel happy, but when they begin to fade and their petals scatter, we feel a bit sad and think it is a pity and we miss them. When such emotions come into play, at times they can actually sow the seeds of suffering. It is important therefore that we accept things flexibly and sincerely and, if possible, without letting our emotions become too involved so that we see things as they really are. There is no phenomenon to which the Dharma does not apply. The laws of impermanence and nonself apply to all things, and we are living and are caused to live by the Dharma from one moment to the next. By learning and experiencing this Truth and the Dharma, and coming to accept all phenomena sincerely and flexibly, we will understand that the blossoming of flowers and the falling of their petals reflect the true aspect of all things, and that there is nothing that involves joy or sadness in this. We can lead our lives without allowing phenomena to stir up our emotions unnecessarily. The Light of Joy Shines on Us A discourse by Zen master Ikkyu ( ) and his disciple includes the following statements: Court ladies are as beautiful as the Goddess Benzaiten and But beauty is only skin deep. Certainly that is true, but seeing things

this way from the perspective of the Truth and the Dharma may seem rather cold in comparison to ordinary human feelings. Shakyamuni teaches us that by destroying egotistical viewpoints, we can also transcend death. When the law of impermanence is firmly accepted in our hearts, we can even come to accept death as part of the natural course of events. And yet, the fact is that even if we human beings can understand this in our minds, many of us cannot come to terms with it emotionally. That represents the difficulty of seeing things as they really are. In particular, when people around us are struggling or suffering, we cannot simply say that is a manifestation of the Truth and the Dharma. This goes without saying for people who wish to cultivate the mind of benefiting others. The Buddha s teachings of wisdom and compassion, in other words, involve the wisdom of seeing the truth while at the same time interacting compassionately and with consideration for others. That is why we should perceive the phenomena occurring before our eyes as they really are, and cultivate the mind of consideration for others and think of the happiness of our own selves and others for that is the lifestyle of the bodhisattva, to which we aspire. As I have pointed out, nothing is by nature sad or joyful. In the Buddha s teachings, we can find a way of seeing and accepting things that deeply enriches our hearts and minds. For instance, as represented by the symbol of the lotus blossom, human beings cannot put forth a beautiful flower unless we have experienced sadness, pain, and difficulty. Conversely, from the standpoint that such experiences are necessary in order to make such a flower bloom, when facing adversity we can see a light shining ahead of us by believing that we are able to put forth a beautiful flower. This, too, leads us to recognize the Buddha s teachings as they really are. In that way, changing to a frame of mind that accepts everything with a positive attitude is itself something of great merit the merit of living in harmony with the Dharma. 4 Smiles Are Like Flowers from Heaven by Kosho Niwano President-designate of Rissho Kosei-kai Focusing Directly I awoke with a start and found the face of my little pre-school age son right in front of my own. He was so close our noses nearly touched, and he was peering into my eyes. Good morning, he said. Good morning, I replied. How are you feeling? Is your tummy still upset? At that time, he seemed to be suffering from a cold, and had been especially ill over the previous few days. For a few successive nights, a high fever and nausea had prevented him from sleeping, and I had spent the night before renewing the ice in his ice pack, rubbing his back, and preparing a basin and a towel when he felt he was going to throw up, not forgetting to see that he drank water to replenish lost fluids. The rest of the time I was simply worrying, focusing on his face, and checking his breathing. The last time I remember looking at the clock it was four a.m., and I must have unconsciously dropped off to sleep after that. I feel a little better, he said. Well, that s good, feeling even a little better. Now I have a question, he said. Why are your eyes so red, Mama? My eyes had not been bothering me especially and I hadn t realized that they were red, so as I was rubbing them I rather casually said, Maybe it s because I was up all night worrying about you. Hearing this, my son s face immediately clouded over and he responded, I m so sorry... Seeing the concern and hurt on his face, it was my turn to feel sorry. It s OK, really. Don t feel upset, I said. That s what mothers do, they worry about their precious children. And of course I do too. So you have nothing to be sorry about. Even if you have a cold now, everything is going to be all right. I said this without even thinking, but I really did feel that way. Without consulting a doctor, I could not offer a diagnosis or prescribe exactly the right medicine. Even if I was able to help him take the medicine I decided on or rub his back to help him feel better, it was my son s own determination

President-designate Kosho Niwano President Nichiko Niwano s oldest daughter, Rev. Kosho Niwano was born in Tokyo. After graduating with a degree in Law from Gakushuin University, she studied at Gakurin Seminary, the training institution for Rissho Kosei-kai leaders. Presently, as she studies the Lotus Sutra, she continues to act as President-designate, making speeches for participants in the main ceremonies of Rissho Kosei-kai, and handling activities for interfaith cooperation at home and abroad. Married to Rev. Munehiro Niwano, she is mother of one son and three daughters. and the recovery power of his own body that would allow him to get over his cold, not anything I did. No matter how much I worried, that would have no direct effect on his illness. But despite that being the case, I felt that nevertheless, it certainly is a mother s place to worry and focus on her child s face with deep affection. My words seemed to calm my son and he thanked me, put his arms around my neck and hugged me. He seemed to still have a fever his arms were hot to the touch. Over the previous few days, I believe the number of times I spent focusing directly on my son s face was probably many more, even dozens of times more, than I would have had reason to do ordinarily. Even if my efforts could make no appreciable difference, still if I was concerned about him and gazing at him should he happen to open his eyes in the middle of the night, I would be able to focus on him and reassure him that I was there, and that everything would be all right. Thinking in this way calmed my own feelings of uncertainty. Of course a mother is always concerned about her ill child, but it is important that she not show her worry and make the child feel safe just by her presence. Still, the best thing would be if you could feel completely well real soon, I said. Hearing this, my son vigorously nodded his head, which was pressed against my chest. His head was still warm from his fever. From Yakushin, November Translated by Kosei Publishing Co.

Spiritual Journey All Living Beings Are Sustained by Something Wonderful How My Suffering Became My Treasure OOD morning, everyone. I was born the second son of the Sakakibara family on February 9, My mother had been a member of Rissho Kosei-kai since before I was born. When I was in elementary school, she was appointed as a chapter head and worked hard for the members. She was usually not at home when I came back from school. When she was at home, we often quarreled. I was not able to open up to her, even when I was having problems. But in my first year of high school, as I saw my older brother, who was then in college, enjoying the activities of the Rissho Kosei-kai students group, I joined the youth group and was given a role. I had been playing soccer since elementary school. In my third year of high school, just after my last high school soccer game, I was stricken with an acute pain in my abdomen. Hospital tests showed that the cause of my pain was a ureteral stone, a small stone which was stuck in the ureter extending from my left kidney. At the same time, it turned out that my right kidney had hardly been functioning since I was born. The kidney was so weak that in trying to remove waste products from the blood, it had swollen. Because of this syndrome, stones easily formed in the left kidney. Rev. Toyoda, who was minister at the time, told me, Your disease helps you to understand how sick people are feeling. At the time, it was hard for me to understand what his guidance meant. After graduating from university I started by Mr. Toshiyuki Sakakibara Head of the youth groups of the Chita Dharma Center The following religious testimony was delivered at the ceremony of Founder Niwano s birthday on November 15, G working. Time after time, I suffered from the stones that would form in my left kidney. Every time I suffered an acute pain caused by the stones, which would get stuck in the ureter, I had to have operations to break them up. But some fragments of the broken stones remained in the kidney, and they grew bigger and again got stuck in the ureter, which repeatedly caused very severe pain. When I had to work, I would often use a suppository to reduce the pain. Why did I have to be born with such a body? Such thoughts would often cross my mind. But I thought that expressing my feelings to my mother would probably just make her sad. So I spent days keeping everything bottled up inside. It was in the midst of such difficult circumstances that I encountered an honorable person who would bring out the best in me. Although he has since passed away, he was the president of a company that publishes books on medical and nursing care. I am currently working at his company. While living on dialysis due to renal failure, he fulfilled his work. He was uncompromising in his work ethic, and could become uncontrollable once he got angry. But when it came to my disease, he was different. Perhaps he saw my disease as similar to his own. He would affectionately look after my health, asking, Are you paying enough attention to your meals? or I guess you need to go to a better hospital. And besides that, he put his confidence in me despite my disease, entrusting me with different jobs; he really nurtured me.

His attention gave me vitality. Thanks to him, I was really able to understand the meaning of what Rev. Toyoda had told me before. I thought to myself, If my experience of illness will help make sick people feel comfortable, nothing could make me happier than that. I came to realize that my disease was a treasure. In 2006, when I was twenty-nine years old, I was appointed to serve as head of the youth groups of the Chita Dharma Center. Although my ability is limited, I hoped to be useful for fostering young members, and helping to realize the kind of peaceful world that the Founder had wished for. I felt that doing the youth activities itself would demonstrate religious faith. But I was always irritated with youth leaders and blamed them when they did not do as I wished. I also was attached to getting more and more participants involved in an activity. In 2008, the Youth Pilgrimage to the Headquarters took place. The purpose of the pilgrimage was to make a fresh vow to diligently practice the teaching by forming connections with the Gohonzon at the Great Sacred Hall and with Rev. Kosho Niwano. We members of the Chita Dharma Center s youth groups also worked for this program. I told the youth leaders that the purpose was not to increase the number of participants, but for each individual leader to do tedori, or guiding others, on his or her own initiative. But in the summer, when the day of the Youth Pilgrimage to the Headquarters was drawing near, I was feeling strong pressure as head of the youth groups. I had to work overtime on weekdays. So I wanted to go out to guide others, but I couldn t. The time was passing quickly, and my strong attachment to having a large number of participants began to rear its head. In addition to these feelings, I had an incident to deal with. One of the senior leaders, who I could always rely on, had been helping me to guide members to join the pilgrimage. One Spiritual Journey day his father called me and said, You make my son go around every day to guide others for the pilgrimage, until very late at night. What will you do if something happens to him? I will never forgive you if something bad happens. I will stab you, and I don t care even if I get killed in the process. He scolded me severely. But I understood his anxiety, and could not say anything; I just listened to his angry words. In my heart I knew why he spoke to me that way, even though I had been working very hard to foster young people. The situation really brought me pain. When the Youth Pilgrimage to the Headquarters was over, the leaders of the various youth groups all agreed that it was good that we were able to visit and support the members more than in an average year. But my mind was cloudy and dark; even when people around me asked me about what we would plan for the coming year, I wasn t able to seriously think about it at all. A year before the Youth Pilgrimage to the Headquarters, Rev. Kosho Niwano gave us a lecture at the youth leaders seminar. I still remember these words from that talk: True liberation is not something that finally relieves all of our suffering. Instead, it is something that allows us to understand the true significance of what causes us to suffer. In the midst of my suffering, I had forgotten those words, and began to feel that I should resign from my role. On November 1st, during the first day of Mr. Sakakibara participates in cleanup activities at Shichiga-hama Beach, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

Spiritual Journey my visit to the Dharma center, I had the duty of reading the President s guidance from the monthly publication Kosei. The theme of the President s guidance was Meeting a Teacher. I learned that, in order to meet a teacher, we need a strong aspiration for the Way as well as a supple and flexible mind. I realized that the aspiration for the Way was something that I had lost in the past year. And I decided to return to the origin of the teaching; the Lotus Sutra, which the Founder had sought. I wished to be embraced by him. On my way home after work every day, I read Buddhism for Today on the train. As I read every word and phrase of the Founder in the book, it seemed as if he were talking directly to me, and his guidance resonated in my heart. I felt as if the Buddha s compassionate heart was reaching out to me. At that moment, I realized that my suffering over the past year was what had guided me closer to the Buddha and the Founder, and had helped me awaken to the true way of living. I thought deeply about Rev. Kosho s words. I felt that the Founder had guided me, a person who mistakenly believed that faith consisted of just participating in religious activities, to the true path of faith. I came to think that the father who had scolded me had been a buddha to me. Since then, whenever I feel unsure about my work, family, or my responsibility at the Dharma center, I make sure to read Buddhism for Today. Since the darkness of delusion is only an unenlightened state, delusion does not really exist. When we realize Truth, which is light, our delusion will instantly disappear. Through the Founder s words, I have been able to realize that in my life, I had seen delusion and suffering as cruel and sad, and tried hard to forget them. I always tried to remove the darkness that doesn t really exist. I didn t try to make an effort instead to turn the darkness of delusion to the light of merit. I don t think my aspiration for the Way is adequate, so I d like to be honest about myself and ask for guidance. In late February this year, I had a chance to ask Rev. Yoshimura, minister of the Chita Dharma Center, for guidance, mostly about my troubles at work. As a middle-level manager, I aspired to advance and take on the drive and initiative of the late president. But because of the recent economic downturn, there was a brutal atmosphere at my workplace, and a certain book on the boss s desk. That book was about how to make employees peacefully resign. There was a shortage of laborers at my workplace but the workload didn t change. This just made each employee s burden of work heavier. To make matters worse, we were having publishing problems. Out of necessity, I became rebellious, and I told Rev. Yoshimura that I had less time to spend on my role for the youth groups. Rev. Yoshimura said cheerfully, This year, you received a role to share your spiritual experience on the Founder s birthday. Don t you think this will be a major turning point for you? It must be an important year for you to think about how you are going to live your life. Be sure to diligently perform bodhisattva practice at your workplace, where human relationships can be ruthless and uncaring. This was the guidance I received. At the same time, in mid-march, something unusual was happening to my body, which had been fine for the past two years. I usually had a pain in the area around my left kidney, in which there is a stone; but for some reason, this time I felt an acute pain run through my entire right abdomen, and I could not stand it. Following some tests, the doctor in charge told me that my right kidney, which was barely functioning, had swollen considerably, and may have been putting pressure on my other organs. It was the sign that the kidney, which had been supporting me for thirty-five years, was nearing the end of its lifespan. I decide to have it taken out.

Spiritual Journey On August 22nd, an operation to remove the kidney was completed successfully. It took six hours to take it out. It was much bigger than the doctor had expected, more than twice the usual size. I was filled with gratitude to the kidney for having lived with me until it had swollen so much. Although I thought I had been living all by myself, through that surgery I realized anew that I am sustained by the wonder of life. In other words, each organ works properly and new cells of the body form daily. And no matter what kind of body I was born with, gratitude to my parents for giving me birth naturally wells up from within my heart. I m sure my mother must have been very sad when she learned that I was born with an illness. However, thanks to this disease, I was able to realize that I am sustained by everything in and around me. Since I was a small child, my mother has accumulated merits for my happiness. Thanks to that, and through my encounters with a variety of people, I was able to know the mission for me as one born with illness. Mother, thank you very much for giving me life. As Rev. Yoshimura had predicted, this year has been a major turning point for me. Also, it has been an important year for me to reflect on the mission I am destined to carry out. I am now going to take care of the remaining other kidney, which will be more important than ever in sustaining my life, and I would like to live in a way that will be of help to those who, like me, are suffering from illness. I now live with my wife, four-year-old daughter, and three-year-old son. I met my wife through Rissho Kosei-kai activities, and we were married. Actually, today, November 15th, is our sixth wedding anniversary. My wife loves Founder Niwano, and she really wanted to have our marriage reg- istered on November 15th, 2006, as it was the 100th anniversary of his birth. We thought that I would be sure to remember our anniversary every year because it is also the Founder s birthday. We promised to have roles together at the Dharma center on the occasion of Founder Niwano s birthday every year, and to do bodhisattva practice on our wedding anniversary. Six years ago, I couldn t imagine that I would be standing here now. I have been so busy with both my work and my role at the Dharma center that it has made my wife feel lonely. But thanks to her support, here I am now. I really appreciate her. Now, some of my coworkers and members of the youth groups are feeling stressed and depressed. I strongly believe that I have to follow in the Founder s footsteps and his way of living. I think it is the Buddha s arrangement that I, who have a disease, work in the production department of a publisher of medical and nursing book. I would like to conclude this role today by pledging myself, as much as possible, to help those who are suffering from disease through my work, and thereby return the favor to my parents who gave me life, and to the teaching of the Founder. Everyone, thank you very much. Mr. Sakakibara gives religious testimony at the celebration of the Founder s birthday held in the Great Sacred Hall in Tokyo on November 15, Shan Zai welcomes your religious experience. Why don't you share your religious experience through Shan Zai with members all over the world? Please send your script or inquiry to our address: shanzai.rk-international@kosei-kai.or.jp. Thank you.

THE TEACHING OF FOUNDER NIKKYO NIWANO True Honesty say, Honesty isn t always the best policy or Being P EOPLE honest to a fault puts one at a disadvantage. But I don t think so. When we ourselves are honest, we can then trust others. There is a saying of a Japanese warlord Date Masamune ( ) from his Gojokun (Precepts for Five Eternal Virtues), If one has too much knowledge, one will tell an untruth. If one is too quick-witted, it is easy for one to make a slip of the tongue. If you often tell a lie, you ll get the idea into your head that others are also doing the same. Consequently, you will be unable to believe others. Even if others have deceived you, it is good enough if you are able to believe yourself. My grandfather always said to me, If you deceive others, you may cause them serious trouble. But as long as you are the one who is deceived, it will be good, since the matter will be confined to you alone. Mr. Koichi Tsukamoto (192098), founder of the Japanese lingerie company Wacoal Corp., said, If people believe that it doesn t pay to be honest, it is because they are not truly honest themselves. They may be superficially honest, but not deep down; so they feel like a fool. If they are truly honest, no matter what consequence their independent and voluntary action may have, they will never feel like a fool. If they have felt this way, then although they may have regarded themselves as honest, they were not truly so. That is very well said indeed. From Kaisozuikan 6 (Kosei Publishing Co.), pp Column Every Encounter Is a Cause of Happiness L A S T month, I was in the Alaska Airline cabin bound for Seattle for the inauguration service of new minister, Rev. Nagashima. The seat I got was the middle seat, in between strangers. Pulling out the Lotus Sutra from my bag, I recited it silently, and took a rest for a while. At that time a young man sitting on my right talked to me, Sir, could you write down the title of the book you were reading? I got very much interested in your book. He works for H&M, fashion brand, and happened to take the seat because he gave up his original seat to someone who needed it. We enjoyed talking about Buddhism. The inconvenient seat became a very wonderful seat. We learn, from the Lotus Sutra perspective, that we see every encounter as a cause of happiness. We meet people in sincere mind, feeling the Buddha in every encounter. Then wonderful future is opened. This is what I learned from the young man in the plane. I gave him the address of RK Seattle. I hope I will meet him someday again. R E V. S HO K O M I Z U T A N I Director of Rissho Kosei-kai International
