4 The Mustard Seed Faith The mustard seed is not the smallest of all the seeds in the world, but it was the smallest known to the people of Jesus age. The seed is so small in fact that it would take nearly 800 of them to make up a single gram. Jesus encourages us to develop our faith, and as with all things, faith begins slowly and develops over time. When a mustard seed is planted its prospects for survival are low, but if it is planted in good soil and tended to over time it grows into a very large bush. If tended to, it eventually will become a tree. Some mustard seed trees grow to be as large as 20 feet tall and provide shade and shelter to people and animals alike. People would gather its leaves to serve as food at their table and the seeds could be crushed to use for seasoning. Doctors of long ago would use the mustard seed in medicines to treat a wide variety of diseases and injuries. It is a wonder of God s creation that from such a humble origin a plant would grow so beautifully. Our faith is rooted in the Gospel and we seek guidance and faith from the stories of Jesus Christ, whose ministry also began as a mustard seed. Daily reflections on the word of God help our faith to grow and can be a wonderful way to begin our day s work. Wherever the Gospel is proclaimed grow the seeds of faith compassion, mercy, love, understanding, and morality. This is what we are called to be in the world. We are called to grow in our faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ throughout our lives and from humble origins build that faith into greatness. We are called to share that faith with friend and neighbor alike and to live the message of the Gospel daily. Though it may seem impossible, think of yourself as the mustard seed. Wherever you are in your journey with Jesus Christ, he will plant the seed of faith in your heart and with your will, tend the tree that he has planted there. Christ as your gardener will help you to grow your faith into a tree of life. Amen. Deacon Chris Is God Calling You? Do You Know Someone Who Would Like To Learn More About The Catholic Faith?
