P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. 1

2 P Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, and call upon Him in prayer and praise, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Confession and Absolution We come before our Holy God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and gives them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen. Kyrie Latin for O Lord. P We pray: Almighty and merciful God, defend Your Church from all false teaching and error that Your faithful people may proclaim Your name in all its glory, confess You to be the only true God, and rejoice in Your good gifts of life and salvation. 4 First Reading Joshua 24:1-2a, (ESV) Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people, 14 Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. 16 Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods, 17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 And the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Second Reading P The Second reading is from John 6: C Glory to You, O Lord. John 6:60-69 (ESV) 60 When many of his disciples heard it [Jesus words about Him being the Bread of Life], they said, This is a hard saying; who can listen to it? 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe. (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father. 4

5 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, Do you want to go away as well? 68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God. P Here ends our second reading. C Praise to You, O Christ. Alleluia and Verse LSB 205 When God speaks to us in His Word it is natural for us to respond. We sing Allelujah! meaning, Praise the Lord! Apostles' Creed We boldly confess what we believe. LSB 207 C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. 5

6 The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. " Sermon Theme: The LORD Has Given Us His Name 1. His Name is His Promise Hebrew: hwhy Jehovah or Yahweh. Literally: I AM, from the Hebrew verb meaning to be. Jehovah is God s personal name which He revealed to His people. In most English Bibles LORD = Jehovah. 2. His Name Changes Our Name 6

Needless to say, he's very sick and in a great deal of pain. Kevin and his wife, Kim, are asking for you prayers. Kim writes: "While in the hospital, we were able to share the love of the Savior with many. God also provided many God fearing people to take care of Kevin.
