Feast of All Saints November 6, :30 & 11:00 a.m.

We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s restrooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form, and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Healing Rites are offered in the chapel every Sunday during communion. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you and anoint you with oil if you so desire. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Our Office Manager Christina Bogar or one of our office volunteers is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. We would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2

Gathering P -S M Behold the Host setting by Egil Hovland Please rise and face the font at the pouring of the water. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. When we were baptized into Christ Jesus, we were baptized into his death. We were buried with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Jesus said, I am the Resurrection and the Life; those who believe in me shall never die. (John 11:25-26) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, we remember with thanksgiving those who have loved and served you on earth, who now rest from their labors, especially Those from this congregation who have died since last All Saints Day are named. A bell is tolled at each name. Donna Reilly Williams Elroy Burgwald Catherine Fengler Mickey Morris Arthur Stamey Ruth Bredal Richard Christensen Bob Olson Richard Diesner Charles Meyer Keep us in union with all your saints, and bring us with them to the joyous feast of heaven; through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen. O God, we give you thanks for all your faithful people who have followed the light of your word throughout the centuries into our time and place, especially those we name before you You are invited to speak the names of beloved departed ones from all times and places. 3

As we remember these people, O God, strengthen us to follow Christ until we are carried into the harvest of eternal life, where suffering and death will be no more and the tears of all will be wiped away. Hear us in the name of our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2) E H ELW #422 G For All the Saints 1- all, 2- men, 3- women, 4- all, 5 all in parts, 6 and 7 all P D Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. This beloved hymn for All Saints Day expresses the mystery we celebrate today. Since ancient times Christians have celebrated God s work in and through the mystical body of Christ. We are one in Christ with the saints beside us and the saints who have gone before us. Word D 7:1-3, In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 4 The holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom.

As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever forever and ever. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. P E 115 1:11-23 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; Marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. 5

this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. G A Please face the Cross as the Gospel is processed into our midst. The Assembly sings Alleluia while the choir sings the appointed verse. Choir sings: They are before the throne of God, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. G :L 6:20-31 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Then [Jesus] looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, 6 Jesus speaks of blessings and woes

for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. As the Gospel retires to the Ambo the assembly repeats the Alleluia. S H D ELW #418 Rejoice in God s Saints P P Gracious God, Hear our prayer. S P P The icon of Mary and child Jesus hangs near the Ambo today. It was a gift to Phinney from Pastor Richard Christensen, one of the departed saints we remember and for whom we give thanks today. 8 Meal P Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal O arr. Robert Shaw and Alice Parker P Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. T G T It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the witness of your saints you show us the hope of our calling, 8 Our prayers and praises are joined to the eternal song of all saints, angels, and hosts of heaven.

and strengthen us to run the race set before us, that we may delight in your mercy and rejoice with them in glory. And so, with Donna, Elroy, Catherine, Mickey, Arthur, Ruth, Richard, Bob, Richard, Charles, and all the saints, with the choirs of angels and all the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Blessed are you, O God and blessed is Jesus Christ! In the power of the Spirit you created all things, blessed them and called them good. You called to yourself a people to make your mercy known in all the world. We betrayed your calling and you remained faithful. We wandered from you and, through your prophets you called us to return and led us home. At the right time you came and lived among us as one of us, brining good news, healing the sick, raising the dead, sharing table with all people, and teaching the way that leads to life. Through Jesus life, suffering, death and resurrection you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery, made a new covenant with us by water and spirit, and received us to yourself in everlasting glory. Thanks and praise are given for God s acts of love, especially Christ s dying and rising. Through this mystery we receive life and are sustained, along with all the communion of saints. 9

On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With the saints who have gone before us and the saints beside us, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your love in Christ as we await his coming to share with us the great and promised feast: Amen! Come, Lord Jesus. Send your Holy Spirit upon this assembly, this feast of life and this bread and cup, that we and all who share these gifts may be your loving presence in all the world. Amen! Come, Holy Spirit. With your saints of all times and places, with all the saints in light, with the earth and all its creatures, with sun and moon and stars, we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen. T L P Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 10

B B I M Presider breaks the bread in silence. The gifts of God for the people of God. Taste and see that the Lord is good. S B C All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Communion will be in front on the floor level today. You may dip the bread into the red wine or white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server. Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. Once you have received the bread and cup you are invited to take a candle from the acolyte and proceed to one of the tables in the chancel area or transept. There you may light your candle and place it near the photos and remembrances of beloved saints. 11

C H ELW #425 ELW #423 ELW #428 P Behold the Host Arrayed in White Shall We Gather at the River Give Thanks for Saints C Lord Jesus Christ, we eagerly await the day when we will eat and drink with all the saints in light. We thank you for this sacred meal which joins us to them in faith and praise. Send us now, in the power of your Spirit, to serve you in lives of faith and praise, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Sending B May God, who kindled the fire of love in the hearts of the saints, pour upon you the riches of God s grace. Amen. May God give you joy in their fellowship and a share in their praises. Amen. May God strengthen you to follow them in the way of holiness and to come to the full radiance of glory. Amen. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son +, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen. D Go in peace. Love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. 12

Christian worship is never a solitary undertaking. Both on its visible and invisible sides, it has a thoroughly social and organic character. The worshipper, however lonely in appearance, comes before God as a member of a great family; part of the Communion of Saints, living and dead. His or her own small effort at adoration is offered in and for all. She shares the great life and action of the Church however she may define that difficult term, or wherever she conceives its frontiers to be drawn. He is immersed in that life, nourished by its traditions, taught, humbled, and upheld by its saints. ~ Evelyn Underhill Participants in Today s Liturgy PRESIDER Anne Van Kley PREACHER Bryon Hansen HEALING PRAYERS Sallie Shippen (8:30) Al Bruck (11:00) ASSISTING MINISTERS Cara Scheffler (8:30) David Rice (11:00) EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS Deanna Clem, Bart Brosten (8:30) Nel Taylor, Marie Hurlbut, Mary Cooley (11:00) CUP BEARER Patrick Meagher LECTORS Doreen Burris, Dana Visser(8:30) Jason Davis, Barb Mockett (11:00) ACOLYTES Peter Golden, Erin Golden (8:30) Carys Davis, Brigid Collins (11:00) ORGANIST Valerie Shields CHANCEL CHOIR Beth Ann Bonnecroy, Director USHERS Scott Radford, Steve Pfaff, Steve Moody (8:30) Leslie Caceres, Karin Rosman, Magnus Pearson, Will Van Kley (11:00) 13

After teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the Andhra region of India. A worker among the Tamil people on the southeast coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary. Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their language, and honored their native culture. Martin, Bishop of Tours, died 397 Friday, November 11, 2016 Martin's pagan father enlisted him in the Roman army. Approached by a beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop. Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855 Friday, November 11, 2016 Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block.
