We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s restrooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form, and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Healing Rites are offered in the chapel every Sunday during communion. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you and anoint you with oil if you so desire. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Our Office Manager Christina Bogar or one of our office volunteers is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. We would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2

Please join in praying for Ainsley, Jacob, Jaxon, Malia, Michael, and Tarkel as they begin their journey toward Affirmation of Baptism. Today we seek God s blessing upon their journey as each student s mentor traces the sign of the cross on their bodies that Christ may continue to be known at school, home, work, and play. 3

PRAYER OF THE DAY God among us, we gather in the name of your Son to learn love for one another. Keep our feet from evil paths. Turn our minds to your wisdom and our hearts to the grace revealed in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Word FIRST LESSON: AMOS 8:4-7 Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat. The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. 5

PSALM 113 Hallelujah! Give praise, you servants of the LORD; praise the name of the LORD. Let the name of the LORD be blessed, from this time forth for- evermore. From the rising of the sun to its going down let the name of the LORD be praised. The LORD is high a- bove all nations; God s glory a- bove the heavens. R Who is like the LORD our God, who sits en- throned on high, but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth? The LORD takes up the weak out of the dust and lifts up the poor from the ashes, enthroning them with the rulers, with the rulers of the people. The LORD makes the woman of a childless house to be a joyful mother of children. Hallelujah! R 6

SECOND LESSON: 1 TIMOTHY 2:1-7 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 7

GOSPEL: LUKE 16:1-13 The Holy Gospel According to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Then Jesus said to the disciples, There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer. Then the manager said to himself, What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes. So, summoning his master s debtors one by one, he asked the first, How much do you owe my master? He answered, A hundred jugs of olive oil. He said to him, Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty. Then he asked another, And how much do you owe? He replied, A hundred containers of wheat. He said to him, Take your bill and make it eighty. And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON 8

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is our duty and delight that we should everywhere and always offer thanks and praise to you, O God, through Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the church on earth all creation, and the host of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 10

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal: you we praise and glorify, you we worship and adore. You formed the earth from chaos; you encircled the globe with air; you created fire for warmth and light; you nourish the lands with water. You molded us in your image, and with mercy higher than the mountains, with grace deeper than the seas, you blessed the Israelites and cherished them as your own. That also we, estranged and dying, might be adopted to live in your Spirit, you called to us through the life and death of Jesus. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, 11

and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Together as the body of Christ, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your Son, the first-born of your new creation. We remember his life lived for others, and his death and resurrection, which renews the face of the earth. We await his coming, when, with the world made perfect through your wisdom, all our sins and sorrows will be no more. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, holy and merciful one, holy and compassionate, send upon us and this meal your Holy Spirit, whose breath revives us for life, whose fire rouses us to love. Enfold in your arms all who share this holy food. Nurture in us the fruits of the Spirit, that we may be a living tree, sharing your bounty with all the world. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. Holy and benevolent God, receive our praise and petitions, as Jesus received the cry of the needy, and fill us with your blessing, until, needy no longer and bound to you in love, we feast forever in the triumph of the Lamb: through whom all glory and honor is yours, O God, O Living One, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy church, now and forever. Amen. 12

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE MEAL Presider breaks the bread in silence The Gifts of God for the People of God. Receive them in remembrance of Christ s death and feed on Christ in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. SHARING BREAD AND CUP All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. You may either kneel or stand. You may dip the bread into the red wine or white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server. Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. 13

Sending BLESSING God Almighty send you light and truth to keep you all the days of your life. The hand of God protect you; the holy angels accompany you; and the blessing of almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you now and forever. Amen. DISMISSAL Go in peace. Many Phinney folks participated in outreach activities last Sunday in our celebration of the national ELCA "God s Work. Our Hands." day of service. People of all ages packed refugee resettlement kits and "sweet dreams bags" for homeless women, helped improve St. Luke's Episcopal, beautified the PRLC grounds, and collected dozens of bags of litter from our neighborhood. Not meant for one Sunday, the Spirit invites us to take the nourishment of mind and body we receive in communal worship and be in the world daily, living out our faith as the hands of God. Thank you for your generous participation. Hands of God, hands of faith, offering hope, offering grace, Hands of blessing, hands of love, we are the hands of God.
