All God s Children Have a Place in the Choir The young voices at PRLC are an integral part of our worship life. Here they grow in faith and service as they form friendships and find their own voice in this place. We are a singing church and delight in the unique gifts our young singers share. Rehearsals and Bread for the Journey are held on Wednesdays beginning September 23. (Note: Youth Choir begins on September 16.) Please contact the directors listed below with any questions or suggestions of prospective choir members you would like us to contact. 3 Gathering PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Deck Thyself, O My Soul, with Joy J.S.Bach WELCOME ENTRANCE HYMN ELW #652 Built on a Rock the Church Shall Stand GREETING PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. Grant that for the sake of the gospel we may turn from the lure of evil, take up our cross, and follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Word FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 50:4-9a The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; 3

therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. PSALM 116 Refrain SECOND LESSON: James 3:1-12 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing 4

and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL: Mark 8:27-38 The Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow 5

me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #685 Take My Life CHILDREN S WORD PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Gracious God, Hear our prayer. SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST PARISH CONCERNS Meal PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND OFFERING OFFERTORY ANTHEM Hands of God Michael Miller OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. (Silence) Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together 6

from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise: beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God. 7

Generations bless your faithfulness: through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your dear Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table, and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We pray for the gift of your Spirit: in our gathering; within this meal; among your people; throughout the world. Blessing, praise, and thanks to you, holy God, through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit, in your church, without end. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, 8

your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION As the bread is broken silence is observed. Then the Presider says: God gives bread to those who hunger. Come, be fed, and be healed. SHARING BREAD AND CUP All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. You may either kneel or stand. You may dip the bread into the red wine or drink directly from the Cup. Grape juice is available as are gluten-free wafers. Please let the ministers at the Table know if this is your preference. Those who do not wish to commune are welcomed to come to the Table with arms crossed across the chest for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. COMMUNION HYMNS ELW #581 ELW #574 ELW #576 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Let us pray. Silence You Are Mine Here I Am, Lord We All Are One in Mission We give you thanks, O God, that you welcome us to your table and satisfy our deepest hunger and thirst. By your gifts of word and holy meal, strengthen us to take up the cross as we go about our callings in this world, following after Jesus Christ, our servant Lord. Amen. 9

POSTLUDE Fanfare Sending Antonio Soler The formal blessing will take place at the conclusion of lunch today. BLESSING At this font God brings us from death to life. The Cross is traced upon our brows that we may know the way of Christ and so enter into the world serving all people. Around this Word God gives us words of life. The Cross has been traced upon our ears to receive this Word and upon our lips to sing God s praises and speak God s mercy to all people. At this Table God feeds us with Christ s own body and we are formed to be the Body of Christ for the world. The Cross is traced upon our hands and feet to serve Christ in our work and to walk in the ways of Christ. God is at work in the world may God use our voices, our hearts, our knowledge; and may God use our hands to participate in God s mission of healing the world. Rather than recount this trip with pictures and stories, he wants to share the spiritual experience with you. This four-part class will dedicate an evening each to the four elements of Franciscan prayer that focus on the crucified Christ: Gaze, Consider, Contemplate, and Imitate. Patrick came to know St. Francis as an incarnation of the Incarnation. Francis s simple life of love offers an invitation to rest in the love of Christ as God meets us where we are and reminds us of God's everlasting commitment to us. This restful spirituality challenges the anxiety that defines our time, and feeds our soul with the nourishment of God's love. 23 Welcome Visitors We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning.
