+ Eighth Sunday after Pentecost July 10, :30 & 10:00 a.m. Go and do likewise. ~Luke 10:37
We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. One of our office volunteers is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. in the summer. We would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2
GATHERING PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Sonatina in G Major Op. 20, n.1. Jan Ladislav Dussek 1. Allegro non tanto 2. Rondo. Allegretto. Tempo di Minuetto WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. 3
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ENTRANCE HYMN ELW #532 Gather Us In GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, you are the city that shelters us, the mother who comforts us. With your Spirit accompany us on our life s journey, that we may spread your peace in all the world, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. WORD FIRST LESSON: DEUTERONOMY 30:9-14 The LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the LORD your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who will cross to the other side of the sea for 4
us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it? No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE The Call K. Lee Scott SECOND LESSON: COLOSSIANS 1:1-14 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. 5
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL: LUKE 10:25-37 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life? He said to him, What is written in the law? What do you read there? He answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. And he said to him, You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live. But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend. Which of these three, do you think, was a 6
neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? He said, The one who showed him mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #712 Lord Whose Love in Humble Service PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST PARISH CONCERNS MEAL PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND OFFERING OF GIFTS OFFERTORY ANTHEM Mein gläubiges Herze, frohlocke My heart ever faithful, Sing praises, be joyful, Thy Jesus is near. Away with complaining, Faith ever maintaining, My Jesus is here. J. S. Bach OFFERTORY PRAYER God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen. 7
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 8
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER O God most mighty, O God most merciful, O God our rock and our salvation, hear us as we praise, call us to your table, grant us your life. When the earth was a formless void, you formed order and beauty. When Abraham and Sarah were barren, you sent them a child; When the Israelites were enslaved, you led them to freedom. Ruth faced starvation, David fought Goliath, and the psalmists cried out for healing, and full of compassion, you granted the people your life. You entered our sorrows in Jesus our brother. He was born among the poor, he lived under oppression, he wept over the city. With infinite love, he granted the people your life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his death, we cry out Amen. Amen. Celebrating his resurrection, we shout Amen. Amen. Trusting his presence in every time and place, we plead Amen. Amen. 9
O God, you are Breath: send your Spirit on this meal. O God, you are Bread: feed us with yourself. O God, you are wine: warm our hearts and make us one. O God, you are Fire: transform us with hope. O God most majestic, O God most motherly, O God our strength and our song, you show us a vision of a tree of life with fruits for all and leaves that heal the nations. Grant us such life, the life of the Father to the Son, the life of the Spirit of our risen Savior, life in you, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. BREAKING OF BREAD AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION The Presider breaks the bread in silence. Friends in Christ, this is the joyful feast of the people of God! Come, now. All is ready. 10
SHARING BREAD AND CUP All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. You may either kneel or stand. You may dip the bread into the red wine or white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server. Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. LAMB OF GOD COMMUNION SONGS Benedictus from The Little Organ Mass of St. John Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. F. J. Haydn ELW #574 ELW #715 ELW #537 Here I Am, Lord Christ, Be Our Light On Our Way Rejoicing PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION O God, we give you thanks that you have set before us this feast, the body and blood of your Son. By your Spirit strengthen us to serve all in need and to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 11
SENDING BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. DISMISSAL Go in peace. 16 Announcements Ministry Opportunities: One of the most beautiful things about PRLC is that so many people are involved in worship leadership. We are hoping to find people interested in engaging in two of these ministries right now. We are in need of people to serve as ushers (especially at the first service) and as van drivers (first and second services). Each ministry is its own spiritual practice, often offering rewards that can t be foreseen. Mark this morning s count-mein to learn more. Church Office Hours Change: The church office is reducing its weekday hours during July and August. Starting July 5 it is open 9AM-4PM Monday through Thursday, and is closed on Fridays. New Member Directory Coming This Fall: We will be publishing an updated member directory this fall and we need your help to do it. If you have changes or corrections in your contact information, please stop at Grace Station this morning and let us know. photos to office@prlc.org or bring them in to the church office by August 25, Children and Family Ministries A New Opportunity for Spiritual Growth Are you a Sunday School or BfJ teacher, a parent, or an adult who wants to reenergize their journey with Jesus? If so, you may be interested in this opportunity to read the Gospel in a new way. Using the book Sacred Listening, participants will explore the stories of Jesus at their own pace and then gather together (no more than twice a month) to share their experiences with this imaginative form of Bible study. If you are interested please sign up on Count Me In today and don t forget to include your contact information so we can come up with an initial meeting time that will fit into everyone s schedule. Also please feel free to contact Nancy Monelli (children@prlc.org) for more information about this form of Bible study which is based on the spiritual exercises of Ignatius Loyola as they have been adapted for those of us in Protestant denominations. 16
