ST LUKE HEALING SUNDAY OCTOBER 15, :30 & 11:00 A.M.

Welcome Visitors As people made one in the waters of baptism, we believe our lives of faith are strengthened by diversity. We strive to be a community that welcomes all people. We celebrate God s unconditional love and respond joyfully to your presence here. All are welcome. You are welcome. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. (If you prefer to have your child with you in worship, but are worried that they might disturb the service, we also have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You will be able to hear and see most of the service there.) Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check-in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. You can also find us on Facebook! Just search for Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Community. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2

Today we celebrate the Festival of St. Luke. On this day healing prayers are offered for all who desire in the Assembly. Today, after receiving Communion, feel free to go to one of the healing stations for prayer, laying on of hands, and anointing. Healing services have long been held by Christians on St. Luke Day. The author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles was a Gentile physician whose story of Jesus and the early apostles conveys a mission of salvation, forgiveness, and wholeness. Pre-Service Music Aria Gathering Flor Peeters Welcome Please rise at the pouring of the water Entrance Hymn ELW #157 Greeting Kyrie The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Let us pray. (Silence) Almighty God, you inspired your servant Luke to reveal in his gospel the love and healing power of your Son. Give your church the same love and power to heal, and to proclaim your salvation among the nations to the glory of your name, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our healer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3

Word First Lesson: Isaiah 35:5-8 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. (8:30) Psalm: Psalm 121: Join in the singing of the refrain at the direction of the cantor (11:00) Bell Choir Response Healer of Our Every Ill Marty Haugen, arr. Diane McAninch 4

Second Lesson: James 5:13-16 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation This Alleluia verse, composed by Valerie Shields, echoes Lamentations 3:22 and draws from the lectionary readings for these Autumn Sundays in Ordinary Time. 5

Gospel: Luke 4:14-21 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke Glory to you, O Lord. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day ELW #610 O Christ, the Healer, We Have Come Prayers of the People Response: Hear our prayer Sharing the Peace of Christ Parish Concerns and Generosity Testimony 6

Meal Preparation of the Table and Offering of Gifts 8:30 When You Pass Through the Waters Paul D. Weber 11:00 Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing arr. Sandra Eithun Offering Prayer Let us pray. (Silence) God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through the great shepherd of your flock, our Savior Jesus Christ; who after his resurrection sent forth the apostles to preach the gospel and teach all nations, and promised to be with them, even to the end of the age. And so, with St Luke and the glorious company of the apostles, with the choirs of angels and all the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 7

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, 8

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. Gathered as one by the Holy Spirit, we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to the Meal Sharing Bread and Cup and Healing Prayers All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of the bread and cup. Please come forward to gather on floor level at the direction of the ushers. You may eat the bread and drink from the cup, or dip the bread into the cup. The large cup is filled with wine. The smaller cup is filled with grape juice. Travelling ministers will commune those who are unable to come forward. If you prefer to receive a blessing instead of receiving communion, please come forward with your hand over your heart. Gluten-free wafers are available. If this is your need, ask the server. Today, Prayers and anointing for healing are offered at various stations. After receiving communion, you are welcome to attend any of the healing stations for prayer, laying on of hands, and anointing. 9

Above all, we give you thanks for the gift of your Son, through whom we have health and salvation. As we wait for that day when there will be no more pain, help us by your Holy Spirit to be assured of your power in our lives and to trust in your eternal love; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
