Epiphany of Our Lord January 6, :30 & 11:00 am
Welcome to Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church As people made one in the waters of baptism, we believe our faith is strengthened by diversity in a community that welcomes all people. We celebrate God s unconditional love and respond joyfully to your presence here. All are welcome. You are welcome. Here are some notes about our church and our facility that you might find helpful. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addion to men s and women s rooms there is a family room with a changing table. The Count-Me-In Form is that lile slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. You can make special prayer requests on the back of the form, as well as indicate interest in special events and volunteer opportunies. Place the form in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. The Grace Station is a Sunday morning outreach of the church office. Office Manager Chrisna Sunstone (or a volunteer) is there to provide informaon about our church and to receive informaon from you about changes in contact informaon, prayer requests, or news about illnesses or hospitalizaons. You will also find current newsleers and program informaon there. Look for the check-in desk in the church gathering area. A staffed nursery is available for children from ages birth through 5 years on this same floor, down past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents return to the nursery to gather their children before the communion meal so they can come to the table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. If you prefer to have your child in worship with you, but are worried they might disturb the service, we have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You can hear and see much of the service from there. For older children in worship, we offer busy bags (found on the wooden coat tree in the narthex) and acvity pages (found next to the basket of worship bullens). Coffee, tea, and light refreshments are offered between services downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Check us out at the parish website for more information about Phinney our common life, ministries and many opportunities for service and faith formation. You can also find us on Facebook: Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Community. We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church is a Reconciling in Christ congregation. 2

The Twelve Days of Christmas culminate on this Feast of Epiphany. The visit of the Magi from distant lands reveals the wide reach of God s love in Christ. The child is born for all. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC WELCOME Gathering ENTRANCE HYMN ELW #275 Angels, from the Realm of Glory GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you. And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE 4
PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. (silence) O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Word FIRST LESSON: ISAIAH 60:1-6 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, 5
the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE 8:30 In the Bleak Midwinter arr. Douglas Wagner 11:00 Sing the refrain below at the direction of the cantor. SECOND LESSON: EPHESIANS 3:1-12 This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God s grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. 6 Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please face the ministers in procession. GOSPEL: MATTHEW 2:1-12 The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be 7
born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SEQUENCE HYMN Oh, let the harps break forth in sound! Our joy be all with music crowned, our voices gaily blending! For Christ goes with us all the way today, tomorrow, ev'ry day! His love is never ending! Sing out! Ring out! Jubilation! Exultation! Tell the story! Praise to Christ, who reigns in glory! SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #815 I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light CHILDREN S WORD PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST 8
Meal PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND OFFERING OF GIFTS 8:30 Go! Tell It On the Mountain arr. Douglas Wagner 11:00 Saw You Never arr. Robert Powell OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. (silence) Good and loving God, we rejoice in the birth of Jesus, who came among the poor to bring the riches of your grace. As you have blessed us with your gifts, let them be blessing for others. With the trees of the field, with all earth and heaven, we shout for joy at the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son; and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 9
Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 10
With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE MEAL AND BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Word became flesh and lived among us, full of grace and truth. Receive the Word of God into your body and into your heart. All are welcome. SHARING BREAD AND CUP Communion will be served today at stations across the front of the chancel. The cup is offered through both red wine and white grape juice. Please either dip the bread into the cup before receiving or drink directly from the cup. If you choose not to receive the bread and cup, please come forward with hands folded in front of you, and receive a prayer of blessing. Gluten-free wafers are available. A minister is available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anoinng. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidenally for any need, the minister will pray with you. 11
